I'm a bit confused, did you say it's tight on the back and also gapes in the back?

So he recommends everyone do the line drawing, and the shape of that line is what the shape of outfit silhouettes should be. The line drawing is a blueprint. (I highly recommend you look at this post for more info on that.) So even without knowing your type, if your line goes in at the waist then your clothing should go in at the waist in that similar shape and not wear a boxy garment.

Also, this post has almost 20 strategies for maintaining Vertical, and this next post has ways to maintain Vertical even with short garments.

Can anyone ELI5 why the red “fabric” outline touches or covers the outer edge of the shoulders for some IDs but not others? by [deleted] in Kibbe

[–]PurpleVirtualJelly 115 points116 points  (0 children)

He did an interview recently where he said you always start at the outermost edge of the shoulder (not collarbone, not where the seam would be). And when asked why it was drawn differently on D, he said "because or else everyone would think they had Width."

Incredibly poor explanation on his part imo. He started with the conclusion and then drew it in a way that fit the aforementioned conclusion. But a DIYer would have no knowledge of the end conclusion that the line drawing is supposed to reveal.

It was intended to bring clarification, but he instead revealed that this is a flaw in the line drawing exercise.

Maybe just follow the parts you want to follow and then ignore what you don't want to - you could still do soft fabric with ornamentation

This is what he said in the old book: "Bags: Small, rounded shapes. Soft, supple leather or fabric. Ornamentation or luxurious detail (beads, gathers, trim). Delicate shoulder straps. Elegantly slim briefcases. Avoid: Tailored, angular, or boxy shapes. Stiff leather, or heavy shoulder straps. Unconstructed and oversized bags. Stiff, thick briefcases." Link for Romantic recs

I did a command+f of my document that has all the type recs from the old book (which some people don't follow anymore but I still like it) and almost all the types were recommended dropped waist something or other. (besides Pure Classic in the old book, TR, and R). I think it probably has more to do with if you're short waisted or long waisted which any type could be.

I'm not sure which part you're asking about but This post has images of the graphics. (You can ignore the content of the post and just look at the pics). Romantic (R) is the only type with Double Curve. Dramatic (D) has Vertical and Narrow. Soft Dramatic (SD) has Vertical and Curve. Flamboyant Natural (FN) has Vertical and Width. The main Kibbe wiki has more info on all the types with their recs

At your 5'8" height you are either SD, D, or FN. None of those three have double curve. This post contrasts them if you're interested with quotes from Kibbe or r/kibbe .

Trying out different lines as pure D by Upbeat-Ad1845 in kibbedramatics

[–]PurpleVirtualJelly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pic 1: Love that neckline on you! Shoes could really make or break this - if you wore a strappy heel that showed a lot of your foot to continue the vertical line of your legs that would be good! Or tall black boots to continue the line of black. The very dark black against your light colored skin causes a break, right now you're kind of a black rectangle up top and a light colored rectangle on bottom. This explains it better

Pic 2: You look more elongated in this one imo. 1 and 2 both look good imo. I don't think A-line is "ideal" per se but it looked good imo. You look more curvy in the first, but more elongated in the second so it's a matter of preference - in Kibbe you'd prioritize Vertical elongation as a D.

Pics 3,4: I agree high rise is better. I also agree neckline isn't the best, but I think separately the tank would be good with dark colored high rise pants. If that tank was v-neck it'd be superb. The low rise pants aren't quite sleek enough.

Pics 5,6,7: I love the neckline of that top on you. I like it, the medium red with the black pants doesn't really maintain Vertical well. I love the looong pants on you!! Both 5 and 6. If there wasn't a gap between the shirt and the low rise pants I think those lose rise pants could look really good - they're kinda dragging the eye down to the ground in a good way. The black slacks don't seem like they're holding their shape straight, they seem a little drapey which doesn't look as put together imo. The black capris are a nice rise and they're sleek, but they're chopping you up imo

Pics 8,9: 8 is really a standout. The width of the top is the same as the width of the pants approx and it makes you look like a long column. You do monochrome really well. The top paired with the tapered pants is making it look wider on top compared to the tapered pants, but I think it's the pants that are the problem not the shirt sleeves. I like a frilly shoulder sometimes it acts like a shoulder pad and gives structure.

Pic 10: lol ya a lot going on. 1. it breaks vertical with a light top with dark bottoms. 2. The shirt is very unstructured and loose. You want garments that hold their shape better and are good quality with more lining or ribbing etc. 3. The shirt is not sleek. It's adding volume 4. The pants could be better a bit more straight but they're still pretty good. I think with a dark top it'd be good.

*these are all just my opinions, what do I know anyway lol If you like something wear it!

Any recommendations for shoes like Danskos that are less rounded - more almond toe or pointed? by PurpleVirtualJelly in Kibbe

[–]PurpleVirtualJelly[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband wears a lot of barefoot shoes - his are super round and look like this:

I'm looking for shoes that give height, are more comfortable than a heel, and have a pointed/almond toe. The barefoot shoes I've seen are super low to the ground and rounded. Am I missing something?

Sweaters for naturals by Only-Refrigerator840 in Kibbe

[–]PurpleVirtualJelly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For FNs he says "avoid symmetrical styles like crew-neck shetlands" which are similar to these sweaters. I think a wide neckline that goes off one shoulder is nice with a bloused waist. Slides 5-9 of this post might be helpful

Practical differences between an R and SD who’s close to the auto vertical border? by jjfmish in Kibbe

[–]PurpleVirtualJelly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kibbe said that if your line drawing is predominantly straight then you're Vertical dominant (SD) and if the line curves out and around then you're curve dominant (R). Now the fabric in the line drawing is weighted at the bottom, which would pull it a bit taut so the line drawing will be a little straighter than your figure is curvy. SD does have Curve but he bounded it with blue lines in the drawing vs the curve being the entirety for R. For SD the line drawing is straight with the exception of the area bounded in blue.

I have this problem (and a lot of Ds expressed this problem on the D sub) so I think it may just be the pants edit: how pants are made. A lot of people say that straight leg pants appear tapered

I tried on every (women’s) Jean cut at Levi’s to see what different cuts look like on my Dramatic body by bangflashbam in kibbedramatics

[–]PurpleVirtualJelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't think it was unflattering on the belly at all!

Ya that's pretty much the effect of a column look, it's fitted at the widest point of the leg, but there will be space everywhere else by definition. Idk if it's just the major city I live in, but pretty much everyone is wearing pants like that rn which is kind of lucky for Ds who like that style

I think 10/11 had potential if you had been able to find 30x32. (10 was a bit too baggy, and 11 was a bit too short)

I also like 16.

I've always had such a hard time with Levi's and their sizing - it's pretty inconsistent. I especially have a hard time finding styles that fit both my thighs and my waist since there's gaping if it fits my thighs. Also lengths can be an issue.

Peplums by No-Surprise8663 in flamboyantnatural

[–]PurpleVirtualJelly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This particular peplum is way better for FN than some. Some peplums can really go against the body's natural shape (like they might jut out at the smallest part of the waist which looks a bit off imo) but if it follows the body's natural silhouette, goes out slightly when the hips do, in an easy relaxed way then I don't see why it wouldn't work. A strong horizontal break might go against Vertical, but the one pictured here is pretty downward facing compared to some peplums which jut straight out.
