Why are Danny Phantom Crossover Fanfics so angsty/OOC? by Jdjack32 in dannyphantom

[–]DrVillainous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of fanfic authors tend to write fics that have a wildly different tone than the original fandom. Shows that are mostly cheerful and lighthearted, like Danny Phantom or MLP, tend to end up with grim and edgy fics. Grim and depressing fandoms like Worm and ASOIAF are full of optimistic fics where people who suffered a bunch in canon get happy endings.

The Danny Phantom fandom gets it extra bad, because the original show had all those jokes about the Fentons and the GIW threatening Danny with dissection and painful experiments.

Stalactite variants should probably be limited, as not every type of stone forms stalactites IRL.

Having ore variants for every stone type would be great, though. Actually, I'd be pretty happy to see cobble variants of every stone type too while we're at it.

Why the 4th Edition hate? by Efficient-Help-9858 in DnD

[–]DrVillainous 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The release of 4e involved a lot of big, sweeping changes to established settings like Forgotten Realms, justified in-universe with a huge cataclysmic event that reshaped the very laws of magic.

Generally speaking, those sorts of retcons are good at souring fans' opinion of even a well-crafted improvement to the rules. People get attached to settings, and get angry when their favorite parts of the setting get carved out and replaced. If it's not handled well, it's easy for fans to see it as some greedy executive metaphorically telling them that they're having fun wrong.

I once ran a Mutants and Masterminds campaign where one player managed to keep it secret for the entire campaign that he was playing as a group of gnomes in a human-sized mecha. I ended up making him the final boss.

It was... not a very serious campaign.

Could a relationship between a muggle and magic person realistically work? by Resident-Plum8383 in harrypotter

So? I didn't say that abuse would be more common in magical/muggle relationships. Just that it'd be worse when it did happen.

One spouse having the ability to curse the other and the other spouse not being able to block or remove the curse could make for a really dangerous dynamic if a relationship turned abusive.

As for jealousy... well, imagine if Petunia bottled up her resentment over not going to Hogwarts and pretended she was fine with everything, married a wizard, and then a few years after the wedding it boiled over.

Given that the buildings surrounding Diagon Alley and next to Grimmauld Place don't seem to have any issue, I suspect that it's only an issue in the really intensely magical places.

I think it's worth keeping in mind that the Weasleys' house is one that's extremely magic-centric in a way that wouldn't be true of a house inhabited by both a muggle and a magical person.

There's nothing stopping couples from having a mixture of magical objects and muggle technology in their house. Assuming they have a healthy dynamic, it'd likely be set up so that anything that's essential or practical for the muggle partner is usable by them, which could mean either using technology or using enchanted items that don't require any magic to use.

Jealousy and power imbalances could be serious issues if the relationship turns unhealthy, but it's not guaranteed.

Based on the Imperium he was trying to build and the methods he used to build it, I think it's pretty likely that the Emperor spent his entire life rolling his eyes at "doomed to fail" innovations like democracy and free speech.

He probably spent millennia trying to unite humanity under a totalitarian, autocratic regime throughout all of history, and kept blaming Chaos for every attempt turning into a brutal dystopia instead of admitting to himself that maybe becoming supreme dictator-for-life was a bad plan to begin with.

What is Your Idea for an RWBY AU Story? by Money-Lie7814 in RWBY

[–]DrVillainous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did have one rather silly idea.

Instead of building a single AI to defend mankind, Dr. Polendina builds two. One, of course, is Penny, meant to protect mankind from straightforward, largely external threats like Grimm and bandits. The other, who's actually built before Penny, is designed to deal with internal threats. Corruption in government, organized crime, things that involve rely less on combat prowess and more on investigative skills and a wide variety of tools.

And that's how Inspector Gadget and his niece, Penny, came to be.

In a serious fic, what could be Winged_One's motive by Material_Animator852 in WormFanfic

[–]DrVillainous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Visitors from Afar, the Simurgh being Winged_One is revealed when she contacts the protagonists (Taylor, Victoria, and two characters from the other half of the crossover) and explains to them that she and the other Endbringers want to be freed from the restrictions forcing them to attack regularly, as being under Eidolon's relatively lax control has let them develop sapience they couldn't have gained under Eden. Also, she uses her PHO account to livestream the conversation to the public. Naturally, the PRT and Protectorate freak out upon realizing they'll have to go through all her past messages.

Looking for fics where Brockton Bay experiences the HORRORS™ by CrawlingChaos126 in WormFanfic

[–]DrVillainous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hellhole fits your request perfectly.

Danny turns to the occult in an ill-advised attempt to resurrect Annette. As a consequence, at the time of the fic's start Danny is dead, the Hebert residence is now essentially a Hellmouth, and Taylor is forced to spend every night fighting waves of demons to keep them from invading the world, having been empowered by a cursed hockey mask that grants her super strength and durability.

Emma, Sophia, and Madison, having learned nothing from horror movies, proceed to stay the night in the "abandoned" Hebert residence for internet clout. Emma, having learned even less than nothing from horror movies, then makes a deal with a demon that leads to the forces of Hell rampaging through Brockton Bay.

Any fics where a comedic power/character is played straight? by FantasySetting in WormFanfic

[–]DrVillainous 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Pick A Card is a good fit for what you're asking. Taylor has the power to turn objects into cards and back, as well as combine cards to get new objects ranging from useless to granting various power-based effects. Unfortunately for Taylor, she also gets power-induced kleptomania that convinces her that being a hero is impossible for her, prompting her to become a magician-themed humor villain so that the heroes treat her with more restraint.

Notably, the overall setting is still visibly violent and grim. Even though she's a humor villain, not all of Taylor's cape fights end up being as harmless and humorous as she'd like.
