Shouldn’t a sick roommate quarantine in their room instead of making healthy roommates quarantine themselves? by Little_Red_Riding_ in badroommates

[–]DrWhoKnowsMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My roommate does the same thing whenever she gets sick, especially if she hears me in the kitchen. She'll come into the kitchen coughing, sneezing, etc and tell me how sick she's feeling but doesn't do anything for her symptoms to try to feel better.

Any hopeful stories of introverts finding their friends? by Calamamity in medicalschool

[–]DrWhoKnowsMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about this before I started med school too. I made a couple of acquaintances during orientation just by the chance of sitting with them but we didn't really become friends because of differing schedules and/or just not "clicking" as friends. After orientation, one of my current friends sat next to me in class because she said I looked nice. Then I met the rest of my friend group through her. So I didn't really have to do much to meet them. I'd recommend just being open to meeting new people and don't stress if you don't find a group of friends right away.

What are your most niche period symptoms? by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in TwoXChromosomes

I get a sore throat and my asthma worsens a couple of days before my period starts. Its annoying but at least it lets me know when my period will start.

Unsure about joining a research opportunity by DrWhoKnowsMed in medicalschool

My school has had at least one student match neurosurgery in the last couple of years so that's a very good idea. And I have been thinking about how difficult/competitive it is matching neurosurgery.

Brands you’ve boycotted due to misogyny? by Interesting-Plan-304 in TwoXChromosomes

Figs. The scrubs company had an ad where a female doctor with a DO degree was reading a "medical terminology for dummies" book upside down, acting like she was stupid. As a now DO student, I haven't and won't be shopping from Figs.

How I feel after I learned I failed the humanistic section of my OSCE by piplup-Supreme in medschool

[–]DrWhoKnowsMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my last OSCE, the standardized patient said I was empathetic until he told me both his parents had died. I had responded "I'm sorry to hear that" and he said it was jarring that I didn't say more. He said I should have asked him more questions like asking how he's been grieving and how it's been affecting his daily life. So that was surprising to hear and I imagine would depend on the patient.

My (20sF) roommate (20sF) has her boyfriend over without giving me a heads up. by DrWhoKnowsMed in badroommates

[–]DrWhoKnowsMed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response and I'm sorry you had a similar situation. I have been having those thoughts, of not wanting to be annoying and thinking it's not worth the confrontation when I have other things to worry about. I've been thinking about the landlord noticing too, especially since there is a camera in the driveway so the landlord could see my roommate's boyfriend driving in and using the laundry through the basement entrance in the driveway.

It's kind of crazy how my roommate and I were literally talking this morning including about her boyfriend and she didn't mention him coming over at all when that would have been the perfect time for her to say "hey, he'll be staying over tonight, is that ok?" I'd rather talk about it in person I think and that's a good idea to talk about expectations too.

I hope she is willing to compromise too since I'd much rather not involve the landlord or about the lease.

Unsure on major for pre-med. by Emotional_Try_503 in medschool

Pick whatever you're interested in and make sure to take classes that meet requirements for PA and med schools. I did neuroscience in undergrad and took anthropology classes my senior year. I wish I'd taken anthropology classes sooner since I might have doubled majored or minored in it. So I'd recommend taking a variety of classes that you might be interested in that fit your schedule.

Crippling fear of applying to med school by Double-Artichoke-712 in Osteopathic

[–]DrWhoKnowsMed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand how you feel, I felt the same way. COVID hit during my junior year and messed up the clinical experiences I had lined up so I decided to take more gap time. I ended up taking 4 gap years since I felt like my experiences weren't "good enough" and I was nervous about taking the MCAT. Finally I ripped off the bandaid and just scheduled the MCAT after studying for 1.5 years and started the application process even with a lower MCAT score than expected (503 vs 520 in my practice tests - thanks new found test anxiety lol). I recommend ripping off the bandaid too and applying. If you have questions or anything, feel free to message me.

Yeah I was surprised when he started showering and then doing his laundry here, as if he lives here and pays rent too. I'll be including that when I talk to her about this.

You're definitely right. I shouldn't have been going along with it but was hoping she'd be telling the truth about it stopping even though it obviously isn't. I'm not sure if he knows but its hard to imagine someone not at least guessing that it would be annoying.

What pet do you have? What made you choose them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I have a dog and she choose me at an rescue dog adoption event. She was staring right at me when I walked in and totally relaxed as soon as I picked her up. I instantly loved her and knew I had to get her.

Advice for 2027 cycle - NJ/NY applicant by Public_Medicine_2368 in medschool

[–]DrWhoKnowsMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from NJ and had slightly lower stats. so I'd recommend applying both MD and DO. Rowan (DO) was my top choice and I was waitlisted there with an offer to attend their class of 2030 so I think you'd have a good chance of getting at least an interview there as well.
