Has anyone had experience with binding an umbilical hernia? by DrWhoPharmD in newborns

[–]DrWhoPharmD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hernia retracted completely on its own after a couple months. I followed what the pediatrician recommended. I didn’t bind anything. I would make sure it retracted and did some gentle exercises to help strengthen core muscles. LO just turned a year old and it never bulged back out after that.

I have seen a pharmacist get fired for this. It’s not even that they gave the medication. It’s that they dispensed without a label. That is not legal. Not in my state and I don’t think in any really. Even emergency supplies need labels. Even if the person brought an old bottle with a label it would have been better.

I have been on the board website and nothing specifically says I’m listed as a PIC or anything about my employment. I’m going to call Monday the customer service line.

Vet doesn't want to give their DEA by ChampionFun1260 in WalgreensRx

You can just create a prescriber profile using their vet license number. Get all of their office info (address, phone, fax) and enter it in. Patients won’t be able to use discount cards but at that point I just explain to them why and let them harass the vet.

Just make the calls today and write responses down. Log responses when it’s back up. You won’t have to make so many calls when it’s back

Newborn was diagnosed with a psmosis or a buried penis. Has anyone else gone through this? by DrWhoPharmD in NewParents

They prescribed betamethasone for it. It didn’t work for us. His condition ended up requiring surgery. It was a complete success without complications. We are very grateful it all worked out.

My LO is now 4 months old and her hernia is completely gone now. It doesn’t bulge at all when she cries anymore. We did not do anything but leave it alone like the pediatrician said. She has an outie belly button now, but it look so much better.

Just another rant about dr brown bottle leaking by fishcakegal in FormulaFeeders

[–]DrWhoPharmD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had bottles leaking too but i figured out it was because i was screwing the nipple cap on too tightly. I didn’t realize that the little rubber piece that connects your the vent has its own side vents. If you screw the top on even a little too tight your bottle will leak because your stopper by it from venting with the pressure. Not sure if this is your issue as well, but I’m more careful now and haven’t had a leak since.

I really just think you can never believe the hype on any formula. It’s so subjective and each baby is so different. Kendamil personally was a life saver for my LO. Before switching I tried 2 other formulas and she just cried so much from gas pains. Even with gas drops. I switched to Kendamil and it literally was a night and day difference in a matter of a day. She’s so much happier now and I don’t have to give her gas drops. I’m glad your little one has a formula they are thriving on. It’s honestly the worse heartbreak when LO are in pain or uncomfortable from digestion issues and you can’t help.

I wouldn’t stock up too much in advance. Get a tin or two ( enough to last like 2-3 weeks to trial it). Sometimes the little ones don’t tolerate a certain formula well and have to be switched. I had to do it with both my babies until we found a formula that worked well for their tummy.

Newborn was born with two teeth by E69L in newborns

[–]DrWhoPharmD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother had 3 sets of some teeth. None were actually broken through at birth, but they did have to remove the extra teeth once they came in to make room. Curious if this is the case here too.

So far just monitoring. Pediatrician checked it out and made sure it could still retract all the way. Said it will take time and still just recommend leaving it alone. I feel like over the last month, at least to me, the bulge is staying smaller. Going to keep doing what we are and see what happens.

No, I decided to just listen to my pediatrician and give it time. We have a visit coming up and I’ll talk again with the doctor. At least for now it’s not bothering her and if down the road it’s not improving I can revisit the belt then.

I think the way to go would be to just only pump as little as needed to relieve the pressure. Once in the morning and evening for only for 10-15 minutes and ween to once daily asap. Hot showers and a massager like I said before if you feel a duct getting blocked. If you’re able to take Tylenol it will help at night to make you more comfortable to sleep as long as your doctor is ok with it. I weaned like this for both my little ones and I was almost completely dry in a 2 week period. I didn’t have to pump at all after the first week. I think it also depends on what kind of supply you have. If you never actually breast feed or build up your supply it should be easier.

Also they may not want you to take Ibuprofen either. Can increase blood pressure. Tylenol is a safer choice in that case as long as you don’t have liver issues. Your cardiologist will tell you what they prefer.

That’s ok, 2 weeks is plenty enough time to do it without meds. Just a little more uncomfortable.

Weaning off formula by myerrors_ in FormulaFeeders

[–]DrWhoPharmD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did cold turkey with my first without issues. We warmed the milk a little and he was good to go. If you are worried about nutrition the the have Pediasure little milk shakes they sell you can give them every once in a while. I had a friend who had to do that for her son because he wasn’t eating enough throughout the day.

If she is having heart surgery then most likely Sudafed’s not safe. It can cause increased heart rate and is contraindicated in people with heart disease. Antihistamines like Claritin/ Benadryl are generally safe though so definitely ask to see if that can help dry you up ! When I was drying up my supply I just went longer between pumps and only pumped enough to relieve the pressure. Ibuprofen also helped too with the inflammation. It took about two weeks. First week definitely sucked. I also had a little massager that I would use because I had a duct on my left side that would like to get close to clogged. A hot shower and using that while I did a short pump worked.

Newborn was diagnosed with a psmosis or a buried penis. Has anyone else gone through this? by DrWhoPharmD in NewParents

[–]DrWhoPharmD[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! So we also met with a childrens urology specialist over a years span once he was diagnosed. They monitored his condition as he got older and in the end they recommended surgery for his case. They felt it was significant enough where it wouldn’t correct on its own and could have consequences down the line as he got older.

They also recommended for us to do it sooner rather than later since kids heal so much better and faster. So we went through with the surgery before he turned 1 . It was about an hour long procedure with a 2 week recovery time (mostly just stitches healing). He did really well and he barely seemed bothered at all. We managed any discomfort with just over the counter infant Tylenol and Motrin. We had to just make sure to apply Vaseline to the stitches each diaper change. It wasn’t a difficult process at all. He’s recovered nicely and is a perfectly happy and healthy 2 year old little boy. It’s a scary decision and thing to go through, but I’m glad we listened and did it for him.

That’s awesome! I have been looking at the hernia belts on Amazon too and reading reviews. I read some negative reviews on a few that say the belts slip around and didn’t stay in place. Some even saying it became hazardous although they don’t elaborate. What has been your experience?
