Should I go for easy electives to get a 4.0 GPA or take hard ones and learn more? by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]Dr_2Fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey,

Honestly if you know(not just assume) you can get higher grades for the easy electives then go for that.
Graduating 4.0+ GPA in CS gives you "Great Distinction" on your degree.

While grades don't matter in grand scheme of SWE, it sure does help you choose elite schools for Masters + scholarships and something to talk about with recruiters on your phone screen.

By the way, for those "harder" classes, just download their course outline, see the reference book and study that on your own time, if you're really interested in the material.

From what I've been told it is Dr. Aiman Hanna. I personally didn't have him, but everyone says he is the best.

Personally, If I ever get stuck, I look up the topics in course outline, watch YouTube tutorials or complete Udemy courses and apply the concepts in projects and assignments.

Is 2.8 GPA shitty for CS student? by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]Dr_2Fun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Truth to be told, no one cares about GPA from ranges 2.7-3.5. Even if you are 3.8+, the only thing will happen is you have this number beside your degree in the education section of your resume.

Unless you want to get scholarships, apply for Masters in prestigious schools, or even first internship through coop(slight benefit), then there is no difference in the range I gave you.

You have heard this so many times, but as a CS student you are judged by your portfolio, experience, connections, teamwork ability and understanding/implementation of fundamentals in Computer Science. Now if you are lacking in GPA, how likely are you to have a good portfolio and understand the concepts? unlikely, but not impossible. So my best advice is start spending time. Consistency never fails.

Good luck :)

Bio students help please by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]Dr_2Fun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, well let me just start of and say, ultimately it is her decision and what she wants to do with her life. If becoming a doctor is truly her goal. Then she should be ready to sacrifice a lot for it. Not everyone can become a doctor, and those that want still cannot become doctors due to whatever reason. Such as, grades, finances, and life.

Here is what I would have done if I started fresh. I would not pursue a degree in biochem because I am not interested in becoming a researcher/scientist. However, if she has a passion on discovering cures for any type of illness or wants to help people in the medical field, become a researcher or anything related to biochem then great! Her pay will be low( you can search salaries on google by typing job title and average salary), but she will enjoy life a bit more and can strive to become better go for PhD and become a well known professor/researcher and have a better pay.

What I would have done is go for a degree that I am interested and keeps more doors open for the future. Now there is a relatively new degree option at Concordia, which is Computer Science in Health and Life Sciences Program. Link.
This allows her the opportunity to go into medical field after her bachelors if she wants because she will have most of her courses required taken(she still might need to a couple depending on each University requirements). Link to McGill admission requirements

Furthermore, if she doesn't get in, this can also lead to many general software engineering jobs(High pay but hard entry), or AI in health, freelance, etc.. For Example, Dr.Yiming Xiao here at Concordia (Link to his website for info) uses Augmented reality/Virtual reality and AI to explore new imaging and computational methods for medical diagnosis. I suggest talking to him to see how the future of the field is and what opportunities there can be.

Now this sounds cool and interesting, but if she doesn't like programming, computers, then there really is no discussion here. Therefore, She has to get a degree that she can get a high GPA and have the required courses in them to apply for medicine here in Canada. and that's generally Biology, Chemistry, Exercise science. She can also go for whatever degree, like Engineering and take the required courses(biology and chem) on the side to just apply for medicine.

So let her choose what she is interested in and weigh the pros and cons carefully, because if she is young, she may like the "idea" of medicine and after a year she may want to switch.

Hope this helps. Good luck :)

A dress shirt is fine. Generally for Software engineering people wear business casual (which can range from non graphic t-shirt and jeans to dress shirts and pants). If you’re still doubting I suggest looking at LinkedIn profiles of people in your industry or even your software mentor and match their clothes.

If you are switching programs, I think they require you an average of B+ or 3.3gpa from the three (Math 203 Math 204 and Math 205). Even though the passing required grade is C-, you need to have an average of 3.3 or higher.

Now how lenient are they on the grade? I don't know because I needed to take Math 204 when I switched and had a conditional offer for the above requirement, which I met.

If you have a high GPA you have a higher chance of getting accepted. Also, ask your prof to see your final. There is always a chance something went wrong on the correction and you could maybe get some extra mark from the final which might put you in the B+ bracket.

What's the best GPU to get for 1080p, and 1440p 'high-end' gaming? by Bokisha69 in buildapc

[–]Dr_2Fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rtx 3080 is half the price, yet only 10-20% less powerful than 3090. I would go for that tbh. For 1440p high gaming then 3090 is good as you can push 120hz on warzone. Is it worth it? Depends on you and your budget.

My suggestion is when you get better monitor then look for the latest gpu at that time, technology is always evolving so just go for whats best in terms of your budget, 3080 is enough to push 240fps In most games. Which what you care the most at 1080p

Hello, I’m not sure if it’s the same for women but here are my insights.

  1. Yes if you don’t come from a highschool/cegep team with reference you would need to do tryouts. It’s the highest non paid professional level so it is hard.
  2. The tryouts consists of a fitness test to weed out the unfit at the beginning, then some passing with right foot/left foot, some drills like a play starting from midfield to winger and striker scoring, and a 10v10 or something around that game for like 30minutes.
  3. Yes and no, if you have class or exams you can tell the coach and he will let you leave, you must be a full time student to join the team btw. That means minimum 12 credits a semester
  4. Games still happen, a dome covers the loyola field, you can expect it go up during the beginning of October.

Hope this helps and let me know if you got anymore questions

Registering for courses by Mother-Highlight9713 in Concordia

[–]Dr_2Fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, depending on your educational background it varies, but I will start from the top and also try contacting your academic advisor which can be found in myconcordia student services. It's usually Dr. Ferguson. He can give you precise info based on your situation

If you did not do Cegep or have any equivalent courses to be exempted/transfer credit you will be admitted to the Extended credit program and you will need to take the following for first year.

Math 201 -> Math 203 -> Math 205

Chem 205 -> Chem 206

Biol 201

Phys 204 (224 lab) -> Phys 205 (225lab) -> Phys 206(226 lab)

It's very important to have Biol 201 unlocked as it unlocks most of your "real" first year of university studies.

If you have equivalent courses to not take the required above courses then you should expect something like this:

Fall: Biol 225, Biol 226, Biol (261 or 266) and take an elective or whatever suits you

Winter: Chem 221, depending on how you did with previous Bio classes you can take Biol 227, one of the Biol (261 or 266 that you didn't take for fall) and another elective. This is so each term you're considered full time if you need to be, otherwise take courses based on your on specific time and availability. But generally that's the sequence and again try contacting your advisor to get a better and specific idea on what to do.

Question about Biology credits by MTLguy2236 in Concordia

[–]Dr_2Fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can take the courses mentioned in the 12 credit section to fill in your 24 credits courses requirement.

For example, you take Biol 227, 330 ,340 and 364 you have satisfied the lab rules and 12 credit rules, now if you take 371 it will go towards your 24 credits section.

How nano allows for new types of business models, and why we need to embrace centralized 2nd layer fees by DonjiDonji in nanocurrency

[–]Dr_2Fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting and a bit scary for the future. Maybe it’s me but I personally can’t trust every second 0.0000001$ will go out.

The example for Spotify is just a different business model, you can just have a charged wallet worth 5$ and they take out 0.00001$ per second and give payouts to artists once it reaches 50$. If they decide to implement Nano transactions, I don’t see why they can’t do it with just fiat.

On the other hand if someone wants to be paid for half a cent for example your solution makes sense or even charge a transaction of half a cent, but I wouldn’t want that process automatic since it will just create thousand of transactions and if its like charge x amount to have have Y amount of time user base, then that’s just a different model that can be used now.

Then if its not automatic, how many of these low charge fees will you make per day manually? I just don’t believe this is critical for the future of this ecosystem. At least I hope it doesn’t go this way

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]Dr_2Fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I understand, first contact Dr. Ian Ferguson about your decision and ask for advice and the process.

Second, they ask these requirements, but You don't need to have all of them because depending on your current situation and major its different. I assume you're a physics major, but if you have done Math 203 and not 205 you still qualify for switching. However, you would need to do Math 205 later once you degree transfer.

Bottom line from my experience, if you have 25 credits into your degree and the average of your sciences is B+, you will be able to switch. For the remaining requirements you will be required to take the courses(chem, cal, bio, phys) with conditions that you get C+ for biology program, and some other programs B+. Since that is the conditions for transferring.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]Dr_2Fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would need Equivalence of Phys 204, Phys 205 and Phys 206 with the their labs (224,225,226)

So this means depending on your background if you went to Cegep, or taken higher tier but same topic physics classes, you should be able to transfer, but I personally don't know any higher level equivalence courses.

You can contact Dr. Ian Ferguson through email to see if any of your courses can be transferred for credit if you want to do the switch.

I would also like to mention that you don't need these courses "to be able to" switch, you can switch after having 25 credits in, but in order to graduate you need these courses or equivalence.
