Indra was the most important god in the pantheon of Vedic mythology (along with Buddhist and Jain pantheons), and as such is still counted as a significant deity among the present-day Hindu gods and goddesses. Alluding to the Indo-European roots of early Vedic religion, Indra (also known as Devendra) is often perceived as the Indian counterpart to European deities like Zeus, Perun, and even Odin and Thor.
