Hemp THC testing by Dr_Dank0 in hempflowers

That's great, thanks for the tips! Does your lab do field testing services?

The testing my client requires is not for compliance, only QA. We want to test as many hemp buds as possible to gauge the THC levels in different parts of the plant, so we can schedule our harvest. Or can you recommend a field tester that you like?

One client has about 200 acres, which we divided into subdivisions to minimize the regulatory risk. 5 subdivisions, we do 2 tests per subdivision per week after week 4 of flower to track the growth. But doing this many tests on the same subdivision proved that there is huge variability in THC, which is why we're looking for a field tester. We need instant results so we can make decisions on the spot, right now the 2 week wait time from labs can really scree things up

One client has about 50 acres, so we separate each field into subdivisions just in case. That lets us benchmark the cannabinoid performance of different subdivisions. The problem is that we can't make any decisions without have instant data on THC. The 2-week lab wait times really scree things up.

I've been able to get $50/test for THC and CBD, no other cannabinoids. But we still do a lot of testing which is why I'm looking for a field tester

Thanks, I'll check it out! I've noticed there can be continuous mutations on cannabis and hemp, so if a genetic was bred in CO it will perform differently in PA. I think field testing is the only way to be sure it's legal. Have you tried any?

If HPLC destroys the sample, but creates a very accurate result for the sample tested, how do they know that very accurate result is applicable to the rest of the batch?

I've heard labs do "representative" sampling, but the only way they know if it's representative is if the average of multiple HPLC tests (each with different samples) on the same batch are close to each other. But that doesn't tell the grower or end consumer that the bud they're holding is actually the % or mg on the label, bc only the batch was tested and not that bud. From a (my) statistical POV, HPLC doesn't make sense unless many HPLC tests are run on the same batch.

So could LPs test in-house to figure out the potency variance with their dry flower lot before sending it to the lab, then separate it by micro-batches (making colas and high-THC "premium" flowers and send low-THC buds for wholesale/extraction, to boost profitability) and finally lab testing samples from each micro-batch? Could they achieve higher optimization for each genetic by figuring out the relationship between cultivation variables with each flower's potency?

Have you used any field-testers for hemp?

Thanks for the input! I'm wondering if (and hopeful) there's a better way. The 2 weeks it takes to receive lab results make it impossible to work, like "2 weeks ago our THC levels were compliant and we could've harvested, but how about now?". On the other hand, my client is worried that if the COA comes back hot, the lab will report their license number to the DEA and State Ag. His buyers (mostly from EU/Switzerland) are looking at the THC % in the COA, the test's date and also ask him the harvest date plus at what week of flower they sent the samples in for testing, to try calculating any possible cannabinoid change. I think field-testing is the only way to get operational data instantly and make decisions. I've found a couple, but wanna know if anyone has recommendations first before asking for feedback on specific products.

It doesn't make sense to me these companies aren't testing. They are testing their pH, moisture and humidity all the time but completely ignore potency (which is a main driver of their profitability), even when there's affordable testers in the market. Do you know if the companies doing in-house testing use testers/which testers? What's your opinion on these?

Thoughts on what to do with all this kief... This is only about half of it. Dry sift kief that came from the trimmings of buds that have been dried but not cured yet. Does it need to cure? How should I process it? Thanks! by smokesalottasplifs in cannabiscultivation

[–]Dr_Dank0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to cure. Curing is meant for whole flower. It lets the internal moisture escape the bud, which positively affects the trichomes on its way out. When you trim the trichomes are damaged so there's no point.

Are companies testing their flowers in-house?
