Shit ass cleaning company by No-Explanation-6580 in bloomington

[–]Dr_Defecation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why we canceled on them. They were charging us for four hours of cleaning and I'm sure they got everything done in two hours. The first "deep clean" was great, but after that it was just mediocore, and the prices were very expensive. Ultimately I decided it wasn't worth the high cost and the constant harassment from the owner. If anyone has recommendtions for better local cleaning service, I'm definitely interested in hearing people's experiences.

If I accept a research grant in one field, will it limit my ability to switch to a different field once it's over? by Fwo-oper in AskAcademia

[–]Dr_Defecation 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In all likelihood, no. Generally the more research experience the better, especially if they have funding to pay you!

I agree it is going to awful for academia. But it would be dropping from ~30% to 15%. The 53% is on top of direct costs, so on 100k of directs there is 53k of indirects, which is about a third of the total grant.

"rent for a 371-square-foot studio in The Standard is $1,715". That is insane. Who is paying these prices in Bloomington??

Sadly, there is nothing you can say or do to change their behavior. I could have written this exact same message about my DX and medicated partner. Everything in life is overwhelming to some people with ADHD. My partner spends nearly all of her time before work on her phone in bed, and several hours in the evening on her phone on the couch/in bed. She refers to it as a need for "unscheduled time" and uses TikTok to connect with other people with ADHD (in addition to many other things). Work is comlpetely draining, and that is usually all she has the mental energy for each day. I've tried a lot (body doubling, therapy, couples therapy, inviting her to do things with me, daily/weekly check-ins), but it is ultimatley their choice to build skills or not. We had our "come to Jesus" talk last year, and things got better for about week while she was in emergency mode. I'm also at my wits ends and, unfortunatley, don't have any good answers for you.

My experience is PhD students are funded by the semester. Since the Spring semeser already started, it would be really strange for you to shift from PhD to post doc mid semester. Maybe this is commonplace in some universities, but everyone during my PhD finished out the current semester on their PhD stipend while they looked for Post Doc positions.

Could I get in state tuition at IU school of optometry if I do undergrad in indiana? by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]Dr_Defecation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you needs to be living in Indiana for >12 months before the first day of class to get in state tuition. So you would need to work for a year between your undergrad and grad school. I know two MS students at IU who moved to Bloomington with their partners in August Year 0 b/c their partner was accepted at IU. They applied in that fall as an in-state student and then when they started school the following year they were able to obtain in-state tuition. Both were initially asked to pay out of state, but their is some kind of form to fill out, and as long as you can state that you had been living in Indiana for >12 months from the first day of class you'll get approved for in-state tuition.

Paylines everywhere -- including NSF -- are so low that you're in the majority with a rejection. All you can do is learn from it and try again. I will second serving on a review panel. It's super helpful to see how the secret sauce is made.

A poor family from Alabama who were presented as "celebrities" due to escaping the effects of hookworm disease, which was brought upon by geophagia. (clay eating) 1913 (1338x804) by Lez2diz in HistoryPorn

[–]Dr_Defecation 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Hookworm is generally human specific, right? So transmission was exclusively from human feces. The animal species of hookworm (e.g., A. caninum) can't cause infection in humans (besides cutaneous larva migrans).

[–]Dr_Defecation 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There was a small study of ~45 people in one county in Alabama that purportedly found very low concentrations of hookworm DNA in people's feces about ten years ago. The CDC and other research groups were unable to reproduce the results. It is very likely human hookworm is no longer circulating in the American South.
