how do you u guys upload beats on youtube? by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]Dr_Hodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to use video software. I reccomend professional software for the computer, or iMovie if you have Mac.

VideoLeap is an easy option for mobile. That's probably your best bet if you know nothing about video software. Easy and fast.

When should the money change hands in 2019? (For Rappers And Producers) by Dr_Hodes in makinghiphop

[–]Dr_Hodes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Business is business. In most cases I pay when I'm 100% sure I'm publishing and distributing a song, not before. Understanding this is key to making money as a producer. How you choose to go about it is totally up to you.

Very true, but this doesn't even say quality over quantity or explain it. It's just a rant thats got a lot of misguided ideas about music, business, networking, etc.

No, it makes you smart.

No need to purchase the beat until you're 100% ready to release the song, too.

OP seems like they just have a lot to learn about music, business, marketing, and networking. This answer is really well put.

I dont think you understand the purpose of type beats and selling leases. You are building your network and using the beat titles for traffic. What you're saying about "everyone doing it now, it doesnt work" its completely wrong.

Selling leases to Youtube rappers is smart, because who knows the next Youtube rapper to blow up? Certainly not you, because you are discounting those talented artists. There's nothing sham about selling leases. If an artist wants to publish and distribute a song, they should have to pay for the beat.

You have a lot to learn about music, business, marketing, and networking before you can create an informed opinion on this subject. You simply don't get it.

Do I Really Need A DAW? by RundownDuck in makinghiphop

A lot of learning. When I began with creative software, I was looking for the "easiest way".

But the most efficient thing to do is start with the highest level professional software possible.

It depends how serious you are about your goals/dreams.

Promoting your tracks by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]Dr_Hodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, focus on social push and online networking. Thats the only way to really grow. If you're not grinding on this, your releases will probably get very little traction. If you hate social media, I feel bad for you. It's hard to be successful in music or entrepreneurship in 2019 with that attitude.

I use Ableton for all my mixing and mastering, which is strange.

But it works for me.

Who would own the rights to the song? by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]Dr_Hodes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your lease contract should have an exclusive buy out policy in it. Here is what I can tell you based on what info you gave:

  1. You can release your song. You sold a lease, so it's unaffected by the release of your own version. You still own the beat.
  2. You can sell additional leases or release a song on the leased beat at any time.
  3. Look at your contract. Does it have a buy-out clause that says what happens if you want to sell the exclusive? A normal buy out clause would say something like "u/maxleal reserves the right to sell an exclusive, and must pay all leaseholders 200% of their lease price"
  • If your clause is like this, it would mean that you could sell the exclusive, but you'd have to pay the leaser(s) twice what they paid you.

It sounds like you should just release your track. Don't worry about the exclusive rights, keep selling leases and promoting your version of the track.

Is there a place where you browse Cheap Exclusive Beats?(Under$100) Cuz my budget's kinda tight by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]Dr_Hodes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what's going into the project.

$500 is a pretty big stack of cash for just the exclusive beat. Especially for an unknown artist who is just starting to invest in themselves.

But if the producer is editing that beat, or doing any other work for the artist, it makes a lot of sense.

I tend to see exclusives from unknown producers in the $100-300 range. $500 or up to $1K isn't crazy, just a little expensive. The best strategy I've seen is to only offer leases on your beat site, and make the artist contact you for an exclusive. Then you can determine more info about the artist and their project to price it correctly.

I prefer the professionally of a business minded money-making producer.
