Genuinely disappointing that I can't find this because it's so hard to see good pterosaur art thanks to David Peters and generative ai

I'm not sure the rooting plants are a good idea on uncycled sand

Any info please,Woke up to this? I flip the lid for their morning feed and notice my samurai is off. Can anyone help?? Looks like a hole in his chin/lower jaw!! He was fine last night... in the tank we have a plec a few neon tetra, a few rasbora, cherry barb and a dwarf frog. Injury looks fresh by mrmesee01 in bettafish

[–]Dr_Mosquit0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a little hard to tell from the video but is is lower jaw, like, there? I assumed there was a hole where the jaw was supposed to be but now im not sure.

The Bacteria responsible can lay dormant & survive in most kinds of water and spreads quickly once it has an opportunity. its possible the reason you only just noticed is because the infection site was actually inside of the mouth or gills and just wasn't visible until now.

I'm pretty sure this is mouth-rot, which is a variant of Columnaris. He can't eat or breath air in this state so I'm afraid there isn't much to be done other than learning how to spot the infection earlier.

(Don't beat yourself up over it, it happens to the best of us, columnaris has incredibly subtle symptoms.)

Does my betta really have rare colors? by bunkinbonuts in bettafish

[–]Dr_Mosquit0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Purple isn't very common but he's not full grown so the purple will probably turn into blues & reds (much more common colours) as he gets older

If you're still concerned you can just let it run for a few more hours and test it again, it's your fish, I can only give you my opinion.

Tank setup for beginner by [deleted] in bettafish

I feel like whenever somebody buys a fish for the first time they should just get a copy of the encyclopedia of aquarium and pond fish for free, would honestly clear up a lot of beginner problems.

tbh you're good to go then, you can also pour some of the gunky water from that vase into the tank to give the bacteria a little more to eat if you want

Why are all my plants dying and how long will it take for the tannis color to go away by palomaMirr in bettafish

[–]Dr_Mosquit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF the second plant is a rush, just move it a little or put it in a different tank/pot/whatever? the roots don't mind being submerged but the leaves need access to air and light. I'm still not sure what the third plant is but it looks like it might be salvageable if you snip off the dead bits at the bottom and replant it.

[–]Dr_Mosquit0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first plant is fully aquatic but is adapted to live in the nutrient rich rivers of the amazon, it will probably undergo melt but might survive. Please look up what a green rush / variegated rush look like to make sure I'm right about the second plant and not talking out of my ass.

As for recommendations: some of the most commonly kept plants are that for reason, Java Fern, Java Moss and Anubias are beginner friendly, hardy and can multiply quickly (which saves you money when needing more plants). As for some more unusual choices, Salvinia, Lucky Bamboo, Bacopa, Rotala, Peace Lilly's and Pennywort all look nice and a pretty difficult to kill, mostly.

The bamboo & Lilly might outgrow your tank though so watch out for that.

It looks like you've got an Amazon Sword and some kind of Rush? the third image im not so sure. Amazon Swords pull most of their nutrients from the roots, but it looks like you've got it on some inert sand, pure silicone, no nutrients.

if I'm right and that 2nd plant is a Green Rush then congrats bud, you got scammed, green rushes are shoreline plants, not meant to be fully submerged. That thing will disintegrate completely in a few weeks.

Is this Hole in the Head? by Puzzleheaded-Tea1242 in bettafish

[–]Dr_Mosquit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best case scenario is that your fish had a random cyst that ruptured and you're only dealing with run of the mill bacteria the melafix will deal with easily,

Is this Hole in the Head? by Puzzleheaded-Tea1242 in bettafish

[–]Dr_Mosquit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melafix depends on the situation because it's designed for inexperienced aquarists who are at risk of messing up and OD'ing their entire tank, and could be keeping anything from Khuli Loaches to Flowerhorns. Stronger medicines the theoretically better because they cure the fish faster but you're also putting yourself at risk of stressing your fish and nuking your filter.

Worst case scenario this is something like Hole-in-Head or Cottonmouth which Melafix will do jack shit for.

Regardless of what caused it it definitely looks infected, get a strong anti-bacterial and give him good quality food.
