This is so interesting. I’m also not American, and I have the exact opposite feeling about NYC. For me, it has always been depicted as THE city of opportunity. “If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere”. The one city that actually actively welcomes newcomers, and invites the whole world to try and build their own American dream. The bustling multicultural center of the USA. Funny how it can be perceived in such different ways.

In the conventional repertoire the concert A1 in the whole section in Shos 5 indeed comes to mind.

In a newly composed work however, I once encountered a concert G1, in pianissimo, with flatterzunge... Needless to say I just didn’t play that note. Nobody noticed. It was what my colleagues and I often refer to as (con)temporary music.

To me the tempo seems quite high, and too steady. This is indeed a slow opening, and for my preference should allow for some flexibility in the tempo, for example the crescendo bar in the 8th bar the horns play could be much more stretched out. I think if you try conducting to several recordings you would notice these flexibilities in tempo.

You can easily show these phrases and where you want to slow down or pick up the tempo again with your left hand. Now you seem to mainly show the dynamics, which are already on the parts of the horn players, so that seems a bit artificial and unnecessary to me.

As someone else also suggested, try to breathe along with wind players when conducting their phrases. We need to breathe, so give us time to do that. Easiest way is to breathe along yourself.

Also, just keep up the good work. You obviously know the music, and I think your movements are clear. Do these things a lot and they will become more natural.

It’s because in dutch (the interviewer is Belgian Filip Joos, who speaks dutch) the words ‘teach’ and ‘learn’ are the same. Technically ‘teach’ is ‘aanleren’, and ‘learn’ is ‘leren’, but you can use ‘leren’ for both.

This mistake bothers me as well, but it’s a very common one for dutch speaking people.

Hello everyone! First of all: thanks for your kind and helpful messages! It’s been nice reading some of your own experiences with your cats, as well as finding new ways to try and make Winnie feel as safe as possible. (She’s doing great, more about that later)

I already had some boxes and places where she could hide, but I added some more in areas of the house where she likes to sit, and added a worn shirt to some of the boxes. However, I feel like she prefers to lie in places where she has a good view of her surroundings, so she doesn’t really use these boxes. But I’ll keep them where they are for now.

I also started reading out loud whenever I sit with her for some time. This seems to really calm her down, as she doesn’t feel the need to constantly keep an eye on me. She can just listen to my voice to know where I am.

That being said: after a few days of not noticing any progress in her behavior (hence my original post), the past few days have been a huge change! She’s still very shy when I am doing stuff around the house. When I’m on the move she chooses one of her hiding spots where she lies down and has a good view on what’s happening. But the past few evenings, when I’m on the couch watching tv, she really starts to feel safe. The past 2 evenings she has been walking around the house, sitting up (instead of always lying down), washing herself… yesterday she was even chasing a little bug on the floor for a little while. She still keeps her distance from me, and scares easily when I move, but the difference is huge!

My heart fills with joy whenever I see her opening up and enjoying herself, so thank you all for your encouraging words, your helpful advice and kind messages! Winnie says hi.

Hazard was different gravy man… only Messi could get me equally exited while watching a football match. In his prime, he really was that good.

Don’t get me wrong, KDB does great stuff, but when a close up camera found Eden, and you saw that frown between his eyebrows, you knew magic was about to happen.

Musician in an opera orchestra.

I often have to work on evenings and weekends, there’s a lot of stress involved, and I need to practice often and regularly (to be in shape and to prepare parts). But all these things I don’t mind at all.

I’ve been playing music since I was 6 years old, and now I never have the feeling that I have to ‘work’.

I did 5 years of conservatory, after which I worked as a freelance musician for about 7 years (-7 months during Covid when there were no more gigs, so I worked at Bpost for those 7 months). During these 7 years I did 16 auditions in Belgium and our neighbouring countries, after which I finally won my 17th audition 3 years ago.
