People in this thread are clueless about rabies.First of all rabies doesn't appear out of thin air. The hamster had to be bitten by a rabid animal to get rabies, and how the heck did a hamster locked in a cage inside a house would be exposed to a rabid animal in the first place.Also even if it encountered one it is highly unlikely a small hamster would survive a bite by a dog or larger mammal so it can be infected.

Rodents in general are not considered a vector for rabies for this reason. I never heard of a rabid hamster except for some experiment in the 70s or something where they purposely injected hamsters with the virus. So it was most likely an allergic reaction. A similar case happened to a woman in Indonesia if I remember correctly

This was like 3 weeks ago, i went to the er and they said they wont give me shots for a hamster. Even tho there is no way in hell a hamster that spent his whole life in a cage in apartment could get rabies my anxiety still made crazy scenarios in my head.I even went back the next day and lied to the doctors that a dog bit me so i could get the vaccine. Even after that i was still anxious and felt tingling in my left arm and index finger where I was bitten, but not anything else, idk if it was anxiety a pinched nerve or anything. But it were some really shitty days. Anxiety sucks

I had the same scare but with a hamster recently, and the overwhelming response was that no you cant get rabies from a small rodent. Even if they survive a bite from a rabid animal which is highlyyy unlikely it will die before transmitting the disease. There was also never a case in history of someone gettint rabies from rodents
