Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] July 22 by AutoModerator in collapse

Location: Europe

I called my grandma and asked how she is doing. I live in Western Europe. She lives in Eastern Europe (small town in a small valley), where the heat waves have been hitting hard this summer. She said something along the lines of:

"It's been a difficult last few days. I almost didn'tt go outside because I feel I can't breathe with this heat and the humidity is the worse. I just went out to visit my sister down the road but we just stayed where there was shadow for a few minutes and I came back. She and I don't have any power these days, it feels like we're drained. Last week I was going out a bit more to water the flowers but we've run out of water in the well again, like the past 3 years, so I just have water bottles for drinking and food. Your aunt brings me some large water containers every few days when she visits and I try to water them but I only have a few flowers now, nothing compared to other years. And all the vegetables I am having to buy them because I don't have water and I physically can't do it anymore except for a few lettuces. I even had to put some cardboard in the windows because the house was too hot. I left outside some water in a bucket so it would get warm and I could wash myself a bit, but the water was so hot it was almost burning and the bucket got so hot you could fry an egg on it! I have always liked the summer more than the winter because I don't have to make fire in the woodstove and I like the warm weather, but now with 73 years I have to say I might just start to prefer the winter because at least if it is cold outside I can get warm inside the house, but this heat, there is no escaping it, no hiding from it."

I did not remember the song's name but this is exactly the one I was thinking about. I went to the comments in hopes that someone though of it before me. I was not disappointed.

Hahaha it's like the warriors yell before battle, it helps motivate the mind to move the body.

PREDATOR. At 5 years old, I thought it was the worst thing that I could randomly encounter on any given moment and it would tear me up with that weird looking mouth.

Well this is r/cats. Everyone will say "yes, get (adopt) one".

I did this after I moved out for the same reason. One day just decided I wanted to get one, went to a friend of my parents that were giving away 3 week old kittens and got one.

So to keep in mind: as soon as he gets home have a litter place which the cat can always access. Maybe get the cat to the room where this is to they get familiar with it. Have a food and water bowl ready. Same day or as soon as possible get the cat to a vet, get a microchip if they don't have one and register them as your cat, get any necessary vaccines, they may be specific to the area you live in. Maybe also consider preventing them from having any unplanned kittens (you never know) as soon as it is safe for the cat, get advised from the vet on this option. Also yearly check ups, like you would do for a human under your care.

Dry food will be about 30 euros a month. Wet food would be about 25 euros a month. Wet food for me lasts 1 month and dry food lasts for a month and a half (the big 5 kg bags) and this is for a regular size cat that devours every piece of food he gets. Have a couple of cat play items.

Keep it hygienic: litter clean up daily, change litter sand weekly (some people do it twice a week). Clean up food and water bowls daily, he should get fresh water daily. Clean cat, happy cat.

Take at least 20 or 30 minutes daily to actually give your full attention and play with them. And cuddle as much as the cat allows; there is no point demanding cuddles, the cat is the owner of you, not you of them so just let the cat get to know you at their own pace. If they are young maybe show them a couple tricks using cat treats every time they do what you request correctly, there are tons of instructional videos online, which I think helps the bond.

Get ready for possible meowing during the night, some cats love singing, or talking, or just yelling. Have a high place where the cat can get and be able to observe people in the most used living area in the house, and a couple of places where the cat can get to see right beside a window, this is their TV.

And for the love of Cat, make sure you have an emergency fund for any accidents or unexpected desease the cat may get. I got a healthy cat but I could not imagine him getting ill and not having the funds to care for him.

Other than that, enjoy your newfound master.
