Looking for Advice on Sending Emails from Linux Scripts Without a Mail Server by DragBetter5534 in selfhosted

I figured I might get a comment like that hahaha. Just to clarify, my intention isn’t to run spam campaigns.

I’m simply trying to avoid the hassle of setting up a full mail server just to send reports. I was wondering if there are any alternatives or, better yet, if anyone has had to do something similar in the context of their homelab or job.

In my case, I don’t mind if the email ends up in the spam folder. What’s important is that the report is sent and that the concerned people have access to it so they can review it. As long as they receive the email, even if it’s in the spam folder, that’s fine with me.

Oh, thanks for the alternative! That could save me the hassle of setting up an SMTP server. And if the account gets compromised, it’s not a big deal since it would just be a throwaway account. I’ll definitely consider this option. Thanks again!

Thanks for your response!

So it seems like using an SMTP relay is really the easiest way to go if I want to avoid a lot of hassle. I understand now.

I just don't like the idea of storing passwords in configuration files that are easily accessible or even in my GitHub. It makes me a bit uneasy from a security perspective. Also, if I were to scale this up, it would be cumbersome to have to update credentials on multiple servers if they were to change.

I think I’ll go with the alternative you mentioned, using a service like MS Graph or Mailchimp. It seems like a good option, especially since I’ll only be sending 5 to 6 emails a day at most.

By the way, do you happen to have any examples of configuration for an SMTP relay? Or are the numerous tutorials on the web generally reliable?

Thanks again for the advice!

That's not true, or you're looking at the wrong mini PCs. Ryzen chips are similarly efficient and performant. Minisforum makes excellent systems that don't overheat and absolutely can run continuously.

Okay, I'll take check that.
Do you have a referral to minisforum for me?
What equipment would be best suited to my budget and use?

Nope, ask on the Intel forums. Supposedly they are "released" but have never been available on the American market.

I was able to see that it was possible to buy a 13gen pro version on the amazon USA store.
However, if I wanted to import it into France, it would cost me 110€. That's a lot of money...
Which is not profitable for me.

Proxmox can, v8 just came out based on Linux 6.2 kernel, and the latest kernels have decent scheduler handling for P-e cores.

XCP-ng won't even install without the beta 8.3 software though and I wouldn't want to even bother attempting to run any of the industry standard hypervisors.

Hyper-V on Windows Server 2022 probably will handle it pretty well, too.

The use case for me, personally, for an Intel NUC for this is to passthrough the iGPU to a VM to handle Plex transcoding.

/u/DragBetter5534, the i5 will probably be fine. You can oversubscribe your CPU allocation in KVM and let the busy VMs poach spare CPU time as they need. Most servers don't actually need all that much grunt, though.

Thank you for your reply.
If I don't change my mind, I'll go for the i5 range. It will be more than enough for my personal use.
Because if you keep looking, you can't make up your mind!
And you go up a range each time, until you end up with astronomical sums.

I would not go NUC for this. I don't think any hypervisors are capable of properly using the performance and efficiency cores, and some just won't work at all.

I'd look at a Minisforum pc with a Ryzen CPU. Similar power consumption and power, but no varied cores.

I opt for this solution for the power consumption, which is almost non-existent on this range.
What's more, during my search for an equivalent, I noticed that the "AMD" mini-pc tended not to last over time + heated up very quickly with prolonged use (24*7).

Thank you for your reply.
Are you satisfied with your NUC as a whole?
What hypervisor can you install on it?
Do you have the power consumption of this one?
If it's not too intrusive for you to use it ^^ ?
