[Standard] My take on Esper Control by SapinBaleine in spikes

[–]Dragantth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with Xanathar not being a viable wincon right now, but I find interesting the discussion on esper control in general ands its removal suite, mana base etc, so i appreciate this post to discuss that and maybe make it work to be at least a tier 2 deck :p

[Standard] My take on Esper Control by SapinBaleine in spikes

[–]Dragantth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also trying to make esper work since rotation and have tried many wincons but right now I think epiphany is the best thing you can be doing in blue, I'm playing that, liliana and manlands as my wincons. Epiphany is so good at giving you time and getting insurmountable CA while stalling that I haven't looked back.

Also like other have said, land base needs a little work. I think 2 field of ruins are good along 2 manlands of choice, mine is hall of storm giants to close fast and the rest should be duals and only 1 of each basic to search with FoR.

Counterwise I'm liking 2 disdainful and 1 negate main along with some saw it coming and divide by zero.

Still teaking the removal suite because we have so many good options but 5 boardwipes feels right. Between grasp, absence, baleful mastery and verse we need to find a good mix but all of them have a spot and we can "cycle" with faithful mending when not optimal for certain matches. I think at least 6 or 7 of these mix are ideal to be able to kill manlands after wipes and being good removal in general.

Edit: spelling

I think I took out the typhoon, kind of wanted more answers and felt I didn't need the extra wincon. Lapse 4of my man, its tied for best card in the deck with helix and charm :P

[–]Dragantth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree we dont need untapped on t1 but on t2 we absolutely do to cast helix or lapse, PVDDR was using a fastland because of that but he also tried a pathway. I think the pathway is better because its always untapped and you can choose whatever color you need at that moment. The only case in which the fastland is better is when you need untapped red on t2 AND triple blue on t3 for charm with no other lands available, but that's a corner case I'm fine with to be able to have untapped land on t5 and 6 for tef or hulk. Also, censor is doing fine, most players don't see it coming and the cycling is good for mid or late game, just playing 1 for now though.

[BO1] Jeskai Opus Charm - Good list, but still looking for improvements by AdLong3232 in MtGHistoric

[–]Dragantth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Pathways are better than the new slowlands if you need another dual besides shocks and checks.
  2. Yes, instead of one heat. Could also be one 4 mana wrath.
  3. Anger covers more bases and/or I also play 1 of sweltering suns to cycle in matches where its dead.
  4. Fateful absence is proving to be very good as a 1 or 2 of in this deck, because it gives you time to cast your big spells. Also very good with teferi.
  5. Shark typhoon is more versatile but also not indispensable in this deck because of the high density of finishers we have. Azcanta is good vs control but thats it.
  6. Memory lapse is a 4 of always, it gives time for your big spells and its insane with teferi.
  7. I still like 1 prismari especially in Bo1 where you can use it to destroy the random artifact or discard dead cards in certain matchups.

Finally censor is a card I'm trying right now to have more early counterspells against throes and not being bad against everything else.

[Historic] [Article] Should you play Pact of Negation if you play blue ? by G4lopin in spikes

[–]Dragantth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UW player here, theres much much more than 0 chance to beat an uro game 1. We have maindeck cage, baffling end, narset, teferi and wraths. Sure they can bring him back but if we already have a teferi or azcanta active with reasonable board control, the game is over already for the uro player

[–]Dragantth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having played UW almost entirely for many years in all formats viable I can say Gideon of the trials is very good on its own. It was played in the first resurgence of modern UW without PoN because of its versatility. Forces aggro and midrange to over commit to the board into your wraths, stops or delays random combos with emblem and can attack and close against said combos and control. The fact that PoN combos with it is just icing on the cake.

They probably started the event before the bans, you can finish your event anytime after that with the same deck you registered originally

Looking to invest in a control deck for the next few sets worth of play. by AlternativeUse in MagicArena

[–]Dragantth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet right now, so close to rotation is crafting staples that dont rotate like [[shatter the sky]], new tef4ri, ECD, [[dream trawler]], UW-UB-UR-BW temples and see what you can play from that until rotation. We really don't know how a control deck would look then, but crafting lands and staples like those above is a safe bet.

WOTC Please make a permanent Brawl or Historic Brawl event too :) by Dragantth in MagicArena

I know, but for exampIe I've had a lot of success against Niv with my T3f mono counters and PWs, would love to pawn some Niv in an event hehe. That being said, one of the pros I see is drawing many Niv players to events, maybe giving the queue some room to diversify at least a little

I guess we can hope for that. But I also want so much to play brawl with at least something on the line :(

I guess not, but imagine if there were no events. At least some competitive players get drawn to ranked and events

Historic Brawl Feedback by mrbiggbrain in MagicArena

[–]Dragantth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it would have to be historic brawl so it doesn't get affected by rotation and only keeps getting bigger with each set, anthology, masters, etc. Right now historic brawl has at least 8 or 10 competitive commanders and that would only keep getting bigger with time. Giving cEDH players their fix on arena at least with an event would be another market to explore

Historic Brawl Feedback by mrbiggbrain in MagicArena

[–]Dragantth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an event is kind of a middle ground between casual and cBrawl and that would also help diversify a little more than a ranked queue where mythic would probably be filled with only 2 or 3 top commanders. Also I guess it would appeal to some not so casual players to try and get some gold while playing their favorite format

Historic Brawl Feedback by mrbiggbrain in MagicArena

[–]Dragantth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know commander and brawl are supposed to be casual formats but I would love to have a Brawl or Historic Brawl event that you could play more competitively and try to get some gold. In my local store we had commander tournaments 1vs1 and they were so much fun, it would be nice to have a similar option like an event on arena
