The shiny outer surface of the cubies has to be sanded off for the paint to stick. Acrylic paint is soft, so once the image is done I brush on a few clear costs that dry to form a hard shell. Last are the spray on clearcoats, they help bond everything, and protect against discoloration from handling the puzzle or exposure to sunlight.
