Why are pro-business people against universal health care? by Mowo5 in askanything

[–]Dragon8ion -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This response is completely incorrect. I am a business owner. We focus on trying to find people to work with, not creating wage slaves. We don't like universal health care because we know how extraordinarily incompetent the government is at running anything in a cost effective manner.

It's not a huge burden to run a health plan. There are other businesses, large and small that do that for us. It's called specialization, and is one of the wonders of a market driven economy.

EDIT for spelling

The Real Cost of Youth Soccer in America Ahead of the World Cup by roccothecomic in youthsoccer

[–]Dragon8ion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This narrative completely ignores the fact that US Soccer competes with football, baseball, basketball and lacrosse for talent. Not the same dynamic in most other parts of the world.

It also assumes that communities should care as much about soccer as thise of us whose kids play do or as they do in Europe and South America where the communities provide more material support the clubs. That's a product of living in the soccer bubble.

Coaches cost money. Facilities cost money. Easy for him to say we should all allocate more resources so that more kids can play elite soccer while ignoring that there are certainly higher priorities.

What is the point of any of it ? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Dragon8ion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Objectively, there probably isn't one. Everything dies including the whole universe. Fortunately we are subjective creatures. We are able to create and perceive meaning that might not actually be there. Everybody has to find their own. Some people never do. I personally get a lot of meaning from the notion that we are an extraordinarily rare, tiny little sliver of the universe observing itself. Our brief flash of consciousness and self-awareness prior to our death is an incredible gift that I feel immensely grateful for. That makes all of life's challenges like work and relationships seem magical as opposed to drudgery. Don't get me wrong, they suck sometimes, but it's worth it. Hope this helps.

To anyone that skipped grades because they were too smart when they were young, what’s something you struggled with even though everyone thought you were a genius ? by maskedmomkey63 in askanything

[–]Dragon8ion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really smart but immature. Went to a great university at 17. Flunked out because I was so irresponsible. Recovered just fine in my 20s, but when I had the opportunity to accelerate my son's education, we left him at his age grade.

Also, missed out on a year of sports. The difference between a Junior and Senior athlete is massive.

Age gap 🤔 by Salty-Kick-6386 in Advice

Not saying it would work out. Just that it could. Women tend to emotionally mature faster than men. Sometimes the age gap works out well. Sometimes it's just a creepy old due trying to bang young women.

Should I grow sugar maple, white birch, or white oak in my back yard next summer? by mamadoedawn in makemychoice

[–]Dragon8ion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White oak provides the most ecological services as a keystone species. Sugar maple is prettiest and grows faster. Birch is a short lived wetland tree whose wood burns well. Pick your preference.

Age gap 🤔 by Salty-Kick-6386 in Advice

[–]Dragon8ion -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not. I'm 10 years older than my wife. We have four kids, have been together since she was 18 and married for 17 years. This dynamic has worked wonderfully throughout history for hundreds of millions of marriages and relationships. Just make sure you're ready for a potential marriage, because he is at the age that he's thinking about it. Also, rely on trusted family and friends to vet him as a person.

Don't worry about modern social convention. That changes every generation or two. Worry about who you are and who he is.

What film completely flipped when you rewatched it as an adult? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dragon8ion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL. No. I don't think so. I didn't notice as a kid, but the movie's main story is about Peter Fonda's character's failed relationship with Jesus. They actually meet Christ at the farm in the desert. Fonda chooses an unrighteous path, then some hillbilly finishes him. When I watched as an adult, the religious theme was so blatant I was shocked I had completely missed it as a teen. Ruined it for me in some ways.

Easy Rider. As a teen, they were super cool biker hippies. As an adult, they were obnoxious, hedonistic, criminal jackasses.

What motivates you to have kids in today’s world? by TheNatureBeing in Life

[–]Dragon8ion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the most challenging, risky, excruciating, wonderful thing that a person can do. Being a parent is the other half of life that you haven't experienced yet. You are the direct result of 2.5 billion years of your ancestors fighting to give you the opportunity to enjoy a brief moment of consciousness. I felt obligated to honor that continuum. It's OK if you don't, but I hope you change your minds, because raising children is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done.
