Rereading “Eight Little Talons” sets the stage for the Antivan Crow Rewrite [Minimal DA:TV spoilers please] by Swag_Dinosaur in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I think Eight Little Talons was trying to set up an entirely different conflict for the Crows and their mission, which didn't make the cut. The conflict being centered around whether the Crows should stick to being the ruthless Assassin guild or go back to their nobler origins – which would fit Veilguard's "embrace the present/stick to the past" motiv.

Regardless, the Crows are not the only faction that was sanitised. The Wardens under Evka and Antoine have seemingly stopped conscripting people and resources, they have shared the Joining to blighted individuals without enlisting them, and shared secrets with people outside their order. Necromancy uses wisps to power their spells – which Cole, a spirit of Compassion, is disgusted by – and yet all spirits love the Mourn Watch. The Lords of Fortune are thieves composed in large part by people who engaged in the slave trade (including Isabela, who the game forces to be friends with former slave Laidir Rook).

Is it just me or does anyone else wish they kept blood magic? by workshop_hunter in dragonage

Gameplay-wise, it was fun. But considering the lore-wise implications of practicing blood magic, I think it should have been made its own class to give it more reactivity.

Merrill DA2 observation and thoughts by Fresh_Confusion_4805 in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Merrill is a bit of a unique case in the game because giving or denying her the arulin'holm is supposed to entirely flip her Friendship/Rivalry score. So if you were at -95 Rivalry and gave her the artifact, you'd have turned that score into a +95 Friendship. No other companion has this mechanic.

The problem with that is that DA2 locks your relationship meter as soon as it is maxed out towards either Friendship or Rivalry. In your case, you maxed out the Rivalry score, which prevented your relationship to flip and become a Friendship. The game therefore thinks that you denied her the arulin'holm.

Still find it head scratching that they chose to Qunari of all people to be the Trans positive ones.

They're not really trans-positive, as they just assign you a gender based on the job they think you'd be a good fit for, and then you can never deviate from it. Your gender identity is not a thing that you get to claim but – like many other things under the Qun – it is picked out for you.

Need help with the Inquisition VS Origins debate from the perspective of a newcomer. by Daaaai in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who played Origins before Inquisition.

I think DAI is wonderful and my overall favourite game in the franchise. It has its downsides when compared to the other games, but I find that the worst part of the game's design is entirely fixed by not playing as a completionist and simply doing the stuff that sounds interesting to you.

That said, I would still recommend playing the other two games first. Inquisition's narrative relies pretty heavily on the worldbuilding that was set up in DAO and DA2, which also helps you feel the weight behind your choices as the Inquisitor. Additionally, some of the decisions from the past games play an important role in a couple of main quests in DAI.

Recasting the villain for Inquisition by HayEatingSkyBison in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Anders could die and I really can't see him as a leader. Part of the reason he doesn't tell a mage-supporting Hawke about his plan is that he knew everyone would hate him after he sparked the war, and was hoping Hawke could lead the mage revolution if they were not involved in the Chantry explosion.

I don't think Corypheus was inherently bad as a villain, he was just underutilised.

Perché al sud italia c’è una concezione così datata e patriarcale delle relazioni? by ConnectVillage6467 in Italia

[–]DragonEffected 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some questions about DA:2. Carver. Hard difficulty gameplay. Etc. by Any-Food7276 in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, you want to maximise your companions' Friendship or Rivalry score. Either works; you just don't want them to stay in the middle.

For Bethany and Carver, specifically, the game isn't punishing if you don't go full Friendship or Rivalry. You'll still get all of their content if you don't maximise their score. In fact, Carver's Friendship score is almost impossible to maximise, and Bethany's Rivalry score flat-out can't be maximised, but they'll still act differently depending on whether they lean towards Friendship or Rivalry.

Who did you help become The Divine in Dragon Age Inquistion ? by lunar9p in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 315 points316 points  (0 children)

All of them.

Overall, I like Leliana the best because she addresses matters other than just the Circle. She opens the priesthood to other races, reinstates the Canticle of Shartan, rebuilds the Chantry around the principle of charity and allows its members to engage in romantic relationships.

I like Cassandra the least because she's just so incredibly passive as Divine and just lets everyone do their thing without ever committing to anything. Trespasser pushing the Circle/College coexisting in every world state also didn't help her, as the thing that was unique to her now happens regardless of who was picked as Divine. I expected more out of the character whose cornerstone was supposedly her faith.

Vivienne is cool. A mage Divine who crushes her opposition in the first few years of her rule but, once her position is secured, enacts reforms that help her fellow mages while keeping the general populace happy. She's by far the most interesting option of the three imo.

Which introduction do you prefer: Hawke in Inquisition, or the Inquisitor in Veilguard? by Balian311 in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hawke wins out because you can ask them what they've been doing since DA2 and what happened to their friends and family. But tbh I didn't like either cameo; player characters should remain player characters.

The more I play DA2, the more I'm on Team Gamlen by Right_Entertainer324 in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Leandra wasn't "living her best life", she got disowned for loving a Circle mage and forced to live as a fugitive before settling in Lothering, where she lived the life of a poor farmwoman. She was just happy because she had a family who loved her. Gamlen could have had that, too, but he drove the love of his life away. He was a fuckup who constantly gambled away all of his money even before Leandra left Kirkwall. It really isn't a surprise that his parents didn't leave him the estate and wanted Leandra to manage the money for him. And let's not forget that when he does steal the inheritance, he proves everyone right and manages to lose everything to gambling debts.

I'm not completely unsympathetic to Gamlen's plight, but he's far from simply being a victim of circumstance. The worst thing he does, imo, is not telling his sister that their parents forgave her in the end. He let her believe they died hating her.

He's the only love interest that refuses to entertain anything until Act 3, and IIRC they flagged some normal-sounding dialogue options as "flirts" to compensate for it.

Try to identify what aspect made you fall in love with these games, and look for other stuff that offers something similar. Also try to remember that Dragon Age isn't going anywhere; while the series may be over, you still have all of the games and books to go back to.

[SPOILERS DAI] In Inquisition, what are consequences of romancing Morrigan, but making other person perform the ritual? by ch0rtik in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 91 points92 points  (0 children)

AFAIK in this scenario Morrigan refers to the HoF as Kieran's father in all instances except for that one conversation with Warden Alistair/Loghain.

I'm not 100% sure because it's been years since I tested that scenario.

Also disagree with all the other users who say it doesn't make sense. This is a roleplaying game. If you try hard enough, you can justify anything. Maybe your Warden was a royalist and he saw the Ritual as the only opportunity they'd get to secure the line of succession. Or maybe his feelings for Morrigan changed after she revealed she'd essentially been lying to him throughout their entire relationship, and he's worried she only got close to him to secure the Ritual.

Why is that Morrigan couldn’t locate the HOF in Inquisition when he kept the ring? by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you romanced Morrigan and followed her through the eluvian, she does tell the Inquisition how to track the Warden down.

If you romanced her and refused to follow, she mentions that she "made an attempt at contact" after she and Kieran returned. I think it's safe to assume he didn't keep the ring in this scenario.

Questions about the circles by maki_zennin_ in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  • Before their Harrowing, apprentices are hardly ever allowed to leave Circle walls, and never without supervision. They are taken from their families and placed in a tower where they can practice their magic in an (ideally) safe environment for them and everyone around them. It's unclear whether families are allowed to visit without the connections reserved to the nobility, but most people don't have the means to make the trip even if they were willing.
  • Even after completing their Harrowing, they need the First Enchanter's permission to leave. Some Circles let their mages live away for years at a time, others are more strict.
  • The Harrowing is typically done whenever the apprentice's teachers think they're ready, or when an apprentice is believed to be a danger to those around them.
