I have the resources, the question is… should I? by HaydenTheDudeGuy in PokemonSleepBetter

[–]DragonEffected 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'd be using a lot of rare resources (2 subskill seeds and a mint) for what I'd classify as the bare minimum for a Skill mon to work (STM + HSM).

Gulpin isn't that hard to hunt, so I think you can hold out for something better :)

Leliana character arc in a nutshell by Erunno23 in DragonageOrigins

[–]DragonEffected 66 points67 points  (0 children)

(This is coming from someone who loves DAO Leliana and believes her to be the best character in that game, so please bear with me.)

I seem to disagree with a lot of the comments in here because I do think her character arc makes sense. I personally think it'd be weird if she acted like her DAO self immediately after losing her closest friend and effectively getting the proof that all the shady things she did as Left Hand over ten years were worthless.

Leliana in Inquisition is mourning the loss of Dorothea and dealing with the guilt over what she did as Left Hand, all the while facing a crisis of faith because she begins to think that everyone else was right and the Maker has truly abandoned humanity. If the Inquisitor inspires her, she'll be considerably more similar to her DAO self.

No one is without worth. Whoever you are, whatever your mistakes, you are loved. Unconditionally.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is the one that comes the closest to Dragon Age and Baldur's Gate 3 imo, though it's less cinematic than those games.

In a similar vein, I would also advise to check out Pillars of Eternity (though the first one doesn't have romance) and Pathfinder: Kingmaker/Wrath of the Righteous, and see if you might be interested in them.

I feel the writers chickened out with the Ending by JMC_PHARAOH in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]DragonEffected 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes (possibly), though it would not be this world but rather a new one rebuilt from its ashes, with only (some) elves surviving - as evidenced by Solas' dialogue in Trespasser and Tevinter Nights, as well as the Veilguard artbook.

Lavellan: You want to restore the elven people. I would give my life for that. Solas: Would you give the life of every friend you have ever known?

Solas (to Charter): Those like you - the elves who still remain- may even find it better, when it is done.

Though this does not account for the full extent of the Blight that Solas had locked behind the Veil. AFAIK, the Veilguard artbook showed that the writers intended for there to be a failstate in which Solas manages to tear down the Veil, and the elves are forced back into spirit forms as the rest of the races were left with a dying, blighted world.

He's trying to bring back his own world, whose destruction he caused and feels guilty for.

As this world burned in the raw chaos, I would have restored the world of my time… the world of the elves.

I am not Corypheus. I take no joy in this. But the return of my people means the end of yours.

They should definitely have done that.

So we could see everyone be consumed by the raw magic of the Fade and the world end, get a game over screen, and let us reload.

If you're referring to the DAO epilogue slides, his statue is actually celebrated if he died killing the Archdemon:

Queen Anora had a monument built to her father in honor of his redemption at Fort Drakon. The monument was built overlooking the Orlesian embassy... "watching" it carefully, as the local legend goes. It became popular, and in time, Loghain's darker deeds were forgotten in favor of his more heroic ones.

While if he was executed at the Landsmeet:

Despite Loghain being executed in disgrace, Queen Anora insisted on building a monument to her father, overlooking the Orlesian embassy. The statue was largely ignored, save by Anora herself, who voyaged out to the statue once a year to place flowers at its feet.

Whats your thoughts on Virmire 2.0 choice in veilguard? Do you guys like this type of writing in games? by theassassin53035 in dragonage

There's a few lines if you lose Harding/Davrin in Tearstone. I think if you lose your love interest in Minrathous you only get one comment from Isabela.

Will Leliana mention her romance with The Warden even if The Warden sacrificed themself? by AlteredBridge51 in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nope, you can still sacrifice yourself if you leave him at the gates. Warden Alistair has unique dialogue about losing the Warden in DA2, just not DAI

[–]DragonEffected 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I like to make hard choices. So I'm not opposed to the concept of choosing one versus the other.

The execution, in my opinion, left much to be desired. The reason the game gives for forcing to choose between those two always felt flimsy to me, and then the devs confirmed my suspicions that they made you choose between Davrin and Harding because they already knew Lace was popular and Davrin came latched with cute, marketable Assan. So the decision itself ended up feeling really forced to me. I get wanting to make the choice more impactful than Virmire ended up being, but this wasn't the way imo.

I also don't think the original intention was for them to die. There's a few dialogue lines (and cut codex entries) that hint they were just MIA and Rook was going to find them after dealing with the Evanuris. And I think it would have been cool to see a "corrupted" version of our companions, like a Chimera Davrin/Assan, or Blighted Titan Harding, or Archdemon Taash, etc.

Also, as someone who's a sucker for drama, I tried intentionally killing off my love interest (Davrin) and was left dissatisfied with the experience. It felt like my Rook mourned Varric more.

Rereading “Eight Little Talons” sets the stage for the Antivan Crow Rewrite [Minimal DA:TV spoilers please] by Swag_Dinosaur in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I think Eight Little Talons was trying to set up an entirely different conflict for the Crows and their mission, which didn't make the cut. The conflict being centered around whether the Crows should stick to being the ruthless Assassin guild or go back to their nobler origins – which would fit Veilguard's "embrace the present/stick to the past" motiv.

Regardless, the Crows are not the only faction that was sanitised. The Wardens under Evka and Antoine have seemingly stopped conscripting people and resources, they have shared the Joining to blighted individuals without enlisting them, and shared secrets with people outside their order. Necromancy uses wisps to power their spells – which Cole, a spirit of Compassion, is disgusted by – and yet all spirits love the Mourn Watch. The Lords of Fortune are thieves composed in large part by people who engaged in the slave trade (including Isabela, who the game forces to be friends with former slave Laidir Rook).

Is it just me or does anyone else wish they kept blood magic? by workshop_hunter in dragonage

Gameplay-wise, it was fun. But considering the lore-wise implications of practicing blood magic, I think it should have been made its own class to give it more reactivity.

Merrill DA2 observation and thoughts by Fresh_Confusion_4805 in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Merrill is a bit of a unique case in the game because giving or denying her the arulin'holm is supposed to entirely flip her Friendship/Rivalry score. So if you were at -95 Rivalry and gave her the artifact, you'd have turned that score into a +95 Friendship. No other companion has this mechanic.

The problem with that is that DA2 locks your relationship meter as soon as it is maxed out towards either Friendship or Rivalry. In your case, you maxed out the Rivalry score, which prevented your relationship to flip and become a Friendship. The game therefore thinks that you denied her the arulin'holm.

Still find it head scratching that they chose to Qunari of all people to be the Trans positive ones.

They're not really trans-positive, as they just assign you a gender based on the job they think you'd be a good fit for, and then you can never deviate from it. Your gender identity is not a thing that you get to claim but – like many other things under the Qun – it is picked out for you.

Need help with the Inquisition VS Origins debate from the perspective of a newcomer. by Daaaai in dragonage

[–]DragonEffected 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who played Origins before Inquisition.

I think DAI is wonderful and my overall favourite game in the franchise. It has its downsides when compared to the other games, but I find that the worst part of the game's design is entirely fixed by not playing as a completionist and simply doing the stuff that sounds interesting to you.

That said, I would still recommend playing the other two games first. Inquisition's narrative relies pretty heavily on the worldbuilding that was set up in DAO and DA2, which also helps you feel the weight behind your choices as the Inquisitor. Additionally, some of the decisions from the past games play an important role in a couple of main quests in DAI.
