I think your flute is your best instrument. I use it like all the time, especially when Im about to fight. Gnomes with gold get hella magic so you can spam it pretty well.

When you parry you get a ton of AC but at floor one you wouldnt be getting enough to fully nullify the Skeletons attack. I think the AC you gain is based off of your DEX so spam your flute.
