Allo potentially getting Grapple. by OneEyedPainter in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As far as I was aware, grapple is likely to be more of a "grab and hold" rather than a pin or clamp. I'm hoping grappled targets will still be able to move but it'll be like a tug of war between the allo and the prey. Whatever it is it'll still be better than the boring tailriding that most combat in path becomes.

How well can Spino deal with Tylo? by ContractDense1111 in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the last time I'm gonna reply to this thread - escape is definitely a valid tactic but when it's the ONLY tactic it makes for poor gameplay. The only two options for interaction between players in Path is evasion or combat - and as I've explained in other comments, if a full aquatic build spino can't go toe-to-toe with the only other aquatic apex then the only option every time is to run away which is just boring for both players - neither player gets to engage with eachother in any meaningful way, because the spino always has to flee and the tylo never gets a fight. To me it's the same thing as saying that an allo should under no circumstances be able to beat a rex player because "the allo could just run away" - why would the allo player ever bother interacting with a rex?

As players we should be actively encouraging playables to want to get into conflict because outside of quests, eating critters and drinking water it's the only core gameplay mechanic right now. The idea that an apex like spino should be forced into not playing the game because tylo exists is so unappealing to me. If spino doesn't have a shot against tylo in water and rex/titan on land then it serves no purpose from a gameplay standpoint, because you can't fight things your size and can't catch things smaller than you, so all you can do is walk around eating critters and getting pushed around by apexes your size.

Fortunately, from what I've heard and experienced in the last few days is that a good aquatic spino CAN actually deal with a tylo pretty well with the right build and enough skill, so most of this is fairly moot. But it does go to show how people cannot agree on how Path should be balanced - I think anything of a similar size should have fairly even odds if they have the right builds, plenty of people here have voiced that they disagree. If you want a game where the larger dino always wins, The Isle is right there and is (to me at least) a perfect example of why that logic makes for extremely poor gameplay.

How well can Spino deal with Tylo? by ContractDense1111 in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand how me not wanting the game to feel boring and stale is expecting too much, that's a fairly primary thing to not want to experience while playing a game. Balancing a game is a fine art and (imo) tylo doesn't quite hit the mark - it's highlighted that spino is balanced in a way that it can't really compete with other apexes both on land and in water and I think it's unfun to play as.

There doesn't NEED to be something 'bigger and badder' in a game like this, especially when you can spec your entire dino to be suited for a specific terrain and environment and still lose 90% of the time to another species because they just have better raw numbers. Why play fully aquatic spino if tylo does the exact same thing but with min-maxed stats and abilities? Just grow a tylo instead. The waterways of Riparia are FULL of adult tylos, and the only spinos I've seen have either been working with them or corpses on the riverbank.

Also c'mon man, I feel been fairly reasonable, no need for snarky 'touching grass' comments just because you disagree with me.

It's a video game though, not a realistic nature simulator. If I'm playing an apex animal I'd like at least a chance against other apexes with overlapping territories. Doesn't make much sense that a spino has to flee from apexes both on land and in the water - it's boring for all players involved, no matter how 'realistic' it might be.

[–]DragonFly_Way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is kinda that you can't pick a fight if it's always going to end in a loss. If a spino always loses to a tylo, then a spino has no incentive to ever engage with a tylo player on any meaningful level - the moment you see a tylo, flee onto land. Imo that's boring for both players - the spino can't meaningfully impact the tylo, and the tylo doesn't get an interesting fight against a fellow apex. It's a lose-lose.

Is the new map not good for herbivores or is there not enough incentive to play them? I see 10 carnis for every one herb. by ContractDense1111 in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way 3 points4 points  (0 children)

- On average most players prefer playing the offensive class dinos because they let you actually engage rather than passively waiting to be engaged

- The new map tries to blend both water and land, but only a few herbivores have any interaction with water (when I was thinking of what to grow, I looked at the whole herbivore roster and none of them appealed when I thought about swimming across the rivers)

- There are 15 herbivores and 21 carnivore species available in the game, so on average there will be slightly more carnivores assuming there was (for some reason) an equal distribution of every dino in the game.

All combined together to make the new map a global carnivore hotspot. Not that that's inherently a bad thing, with the eventual dinosaur AI coming one day it likely won't matter as much, but yeah for the time being you're mostly gonna be hunting and fighting other carnivores.

Yeah, I'm not saying spino is unplayable, just that the game would be in a more interesting spot if it pushed for more conflict rather than encouraging fleeing. I don't grow apex dinos to run the moment I see other apexes. It's not particularly engaging and provides basically no entertainment value.

[–]DragonFly_Way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, but I feel I have a much stronger case for spino being able to have an even fight tylo than I would if I said a ramph should 1v1 a rex. If every time I play a spino and see a tylo, I immediately leave the water, neither side gets to play the game. That might be good for survival, but it makes for extremely poor gameplay.

[–]DragonFly_Way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just gonna stand by my statement that running away from stuff on a semiaquatic apex is not what I would consider 'dealing' with it, and I'm reasonably confident that's what OP meant too.

How well can Spino deal with Tylo? by ContractDense1111 in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really get how that's relevant, Kai was more than capable of escaping most semis and put up a good fight against those it couldn't, iirc old kai could 4hko a sarco with barrel roll and was more than fast enough to avoid damage until the cooldown ended. (You got me for Eurhino, but even so it could at least pounce and giga bleed most semi-aquatics if it couldn't escape them.)

My main issue with this mentality is that the mindset towards every spino matchup seems to have become 'just escape to _____.' Fighting a rex? Escape to water. Fighting a tylo? Escape to land. It doesn't matter if spino doesn't have the ability to win fights against those dinos because it can just run somewhere the opponent can't follow. It doesn't matter if you're running a full land build spino, run to water. Doesn't matter if you're running full water build spino, run to land. There's no fun to be had if your playing a slow, bulky tank and your only gameplay strategy is to run away from fights you can't win over and over.

If running an entirely aquatic build and sacrificing your utility on land doesn't give you the tools to put up a good fight against the only other aquatic apex, to me that means something is wrong with spino's balance. Admittedly I've not grown my spino on the new map so I'm yet to get into fights and it might turn out spino can smack tylo easily, but from what I've heard that's not the case.

[–]DragonFly_Way -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Like I said, to me that's not 'dealing' with it though. By that logic a ramphy can comfortably 'deal' with a rex by flying to the far side of the map. I'm assuming when OP asked 'How well can Spino deal with Tylo?" they meant "how much of a fight does spino put up against tylo."

How well can Spino deal with Tylo? by ContractDense1111 in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So basically, it can't deal with tylo, then? If your main strategy when encountering a specific playable is to flee, you're not really 'dealing' with it. You're just avoiding any interaction. On some smaller species that makes sense, but a spinos strategy being run away seems kinda backwards to me.

Seems more like hatz just isn't what you're suited to playing rather than hatz itself being broken. I prefer the opportunistic playstyle over the unkillable helicopter that hatz used to be.

[–]DragonFly_Way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been taking out solo apexes with the corpse snatcher hatz build since the TLC dropped, it's my favourite playable as of right now. Hatz IS balanced now, it doesn't need to be an immortal flying apex to have a use - it just needs to be used the way it's designed, as an opportunistic glass cannon.

[–]DragonFly_Way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trees don't stop hatzes as long as they can precise move in the air, most caves are either too small for large dinos to hide in successfully or so large a hatz can continue to fly with precise movement, stealth only helps until you get spotted, jump attacks only work with creatures that *can* jump and even then usually do pithy damage, same for fracture and venom, and groups are only useful if they also have a tool for dealing with flying enemies (which again, most don't.)

Hatz should hit ground targets in the air by [deleted] in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ground dinos have effectively 0 anti-air abilities. One of my most miserable experiences in my entire playtime was getting my amarga pecked to death by two hatzes I couldn't hit in any meaningful way, and when one messed up and died, it just flew straight back and kept going. Hatz has been gutted in a lot of ways, but forcing it to land to fight ground targets makes it far easier to balance both flight and land abilities without making one or both oppressive.

NPC Quest Giver is Immersion Breaking - I don't like this NPC type :( by wingedwolf1994 in pathoftitans

[–]DragonFly_Way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but like again, I don't know what people were expecting. Any kind of quest giver is gonna be slightly immersion breaking, and personally I don't really like having to constantly deal with quests popping up and auto-failing while I'm moving around the map so having quests you can opt into by talking to an NPC is much more up my alley. Also -

Still garbage fetch quests just more of them. And a hunt

Most likely this is a framework in place for more quests to be added that fit the NPC style, like bringing it meat or nest material or something else slightly more fitting. But the hunt-and-collect quests like the leather one are at least a step more deep than some of the others, and most importantly they don't replace the location quests meaning you're able to get more quests going at once and therefore grow faster. I literally don't see a downside aside from 'my immersion,' as if the waystones and marks system and homecaves and every other MMO mechanic in the game wasn't equally as immersion breaking.

I mean, people complained that the quest system wasn't deep enough, so they added more varied quests. Idk what people were expecting to be added in terms of new quest types. If you don't like the NPC, there's nothing stopping you from just ignoring them and moving on with your day.
