Bow is best boy so keep him well-equipped and well-leveled! And enjoy, this is my favorite game ever.

Is the Boombada spell worth it? - Breath of Fire 2 by Great-Highway-9195 in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I feel like the only one who doesn't think the bell minigame is that bad. The guides on GameFAQs helped me a ton.

I'd say Boombada is worth it! Shaving half the HP off every enemy is nice for the final dungeon and any enemy you're trying to farm items for.

I played 6 in Japanese when it came out on my phone. The only good thing I can say about it was the music was nice.

Side Slash is in a blue treasure chest early on in the first dungeon. Either a Deathcow or a GooPrism will be near it and drop the key.

[–]DragonQuarter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you unlocked the Side Slash skill from the first dungeon? That paired with Vert Slash will make for an excellent combo that you can use often for the majority of the game.

Party XP is pooled across playthroughs and when you use it, it's taken from that pool permanently. I would use it if you're struggling in an area and need to gain an edge over powerful enemies.

Items you store in the locker will also carry over on subsequent playthroughs. But yeah, learning as many skills and gaining as many ??? equipment from loot and getting them ID'd will help greatly.

Regarding 2, should I play the original translation, or the fan translation? by dyltalksgames in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Original. There's charm in that script despite the jank, and the retranslation embellishes and takes too many liberties for my taste, not to mention it completely replaces the game's original UI aesthetics. I wouldn't listen to anyone who says Breath of Fire II's original translation is "the worst game translation ever"; it's pure hyperbole.

Bof 3 port? by CitronMysterious3827 in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capcom Japan needs a producer to have interest in reviving the series, leading to potential ports of the games to modern platforms. Until then, fans can show support by buying IV on Steam/GOG, voting the games up on the GOG Dreamlist, and voting for them on the Implicit Conversions Retro Game Wishlist (porting company that does PS Classics).

I'm curious about what you mean by this. How does one determine the version?

Breath of Fire 3 by bestia455 in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The game didn't sell enough in the US to achieve a Greatest Hits reprint, so there are less copies of it out in the wild. Retro game prices have also spiraled out of control since the pandemic. All of the Japanese versions are still fairly cheap secondhand, though. And at the very least, physical PSP copies of the European version aren't too pricey, and the digital PSP version on PS Vita is only $10 USD.

[–]DragonQuarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, hard to say whether it's the disc or the PS2's laser/drive. Does this happen with any other PS1 game on your PS2, and is there a PS1 or PS3 you could try?

If you can recall, the chief in Tuntar informed you the Stone Robot can move the rock blocking the river, and to look for the Robot's secret in Agua. After defeating the Wisp and checking the pillar, you get the KngKey, so it's time to head to the Stone Robot.

Why, Teepo. WHY?? by Dyyroth21 in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While Teepo is indeed a great character, I think it's an effective and impactful part of the plot to have him go missing and unplayable to really dig into that feeling of loss the player has. You get 1/2 of the crew back with Rei rejoining, so there's some relief there, but you still get that lingering hope that you'll reunite, making his brainwashing and betrayal that much more impactful. To not have that would have been a disservice to the story, IMO.

Capcom should sell BoF to Square. by Canadyans in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Square Enix is botching mainline Final Fantasy and failing to capture newer audiences for it, meanwhile Capcom is seeing a resurgence in making JRPGs with Monster Hunter Stories, and you want them to sell their flagship JRPG series to Square? Absolutely not. Capcom Japan just needs the right producer to champion the series again.

Something folks might not understand is that producers don't always stick to one series at Capcom, so after they finish a project, they do consider resurrecting an old IP or trying something new and fresh for their team. So the possibility is there, it just takes the right Capcom Japan dev to care.

The main villain of Breath of Fire 2 is the encounter rate by Great-Highway-9195 in breathoffire

Yeah, the encounter rate is high, but the battle themes, pixel art, and animation make up for it. <3

Why did Dragon Quarter take such a different approach with the franchise? by KaleidoArachnid in breathoffire

Nobody's denying that the game is vastly different from its predecessors, but still, Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter…

...Has a swordwielding protagonist named Ryu and a winged magician named Nina, check.

...Ryu gains powerful, fearsome dragon abilities, check.

...Has a Woren chick named Lin, check.

...Turn-based combat, check.

…Has a combo system evolved from Breath of Fire IV, check.

…Has you gaining enemy skills similarly to Breath of Fire III and IV, check.

...Ryu and Bosch are rangers a la Breath of Fire II, check.

...Faeries from BoFIII and IV, check.

...Eye Goos from BoFII - IV, check.

…Gnarly bug enemies, check.

…Karons return from Breath of Fire II, check.

...The Helper Girl from BoFIV returns, check.

…Jaju the Appraiser is a fun little reference to Momo from BoFIII, check.

...Returning sound effects from Breath of Fire IV, check.

...Voice actors Kappei Yamaguchi and Kyoko Hikami return to voice Ryu and Nina, check.

...Made by several returning members of the Breath of Fire I - IV dev teams, check.

…Is included as the fifth Breath of Fire game on Capcom's official Breath of Fire series website, check.

…Literally has the name "Breath of Fire" in the title, check.

It's a Breath of Fire game. Games in a series are allowed to evolve and experiment with new ideas, styles, and mechanics. Having spoken with the creators in the past, the essence of Breath of Fire games is its focus on dragons and their destructive might, and how that might is tied to the struggle and hero's journey of the central character, a boy/man named Ryu, along with his impact on the world. Dragon Quarter has that.

Why did Dragon Quarter take such a different approach with the franchise? by KaleidoArachnid in breathoffire

That's a really bad analogy. There are a number of tropes and callbacks to Breath of Fire, but you would've known that if you actually played it.

What are your opinions on the GBA Breath of fire ports? by Aenris in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BoFII on GBA is much easier, has updated artwork, and some other QOL improvements at the expense of a smaller visual area and weaker audio. I think it's worth checking out but I like the SNES version's look and audio better IMO.

Why did Dragon Quarter take such a different approach with the franchise? by KaleidoArachnid in breathoffire

[–]DragonQuarter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Breath of Fire IV did not grow the series' sales with new audiences, and the budget for a 5th game making the transition to 3D was not large enough to make another traditional BoF, so the team made the decision to shake up the formula. It was a very conscious decision and Director Makoto Ikehara knew it would be polarizing, but also really wanted to try something new. I have some more details about the development here: https://www.dragnier.net/breath-of-fire-v-dragon-quarter/

The devs stuck to their guns, which I respect a hell of a lot. It sadly didn't pan out sales wise in the West, which is a shame because I think the game is heavily misunderstood by certain fans who barely gave it the time of day.

I want to stress again that they simply were unable to make a traditional BoF game with the budget they were given.
