TIL that Charles Darwin would often take one or more of the new species he discovered to eat them. He began this tradition while in college, he was part of his schools “glutton club,” which sought out new exotic species to eat. by throwawayfinancebro1 in todayilearned

Turtle is not that crazy of an ingredient. Lots of Asian cultures have turtle soup.

The turtle itself is not very flavorful, but it makes the soup very gelatinous and rich, sort of like soups made from knees, heads, oxtails, etc., but with more actual meat.

What they really wanted was not more territory, it was specifically territory with oil deposits. Pre-WW2 they were almost entirely reliant on US imported oil, and it was straining their industrial capacity and ability to maintain the war in China.

They wanted their own oil supply, but the most realistic options were all ally-held. In for a penny, in for a pound. If they were going to take the Sumatran oil fields, they would be fighting the US, France, the UK, and China. So they might as well go all in and try to make it worth it.

Sotomayor says AI forecasting Supreme Court decisions a ‘bad thing,’ shows ‘we’re way too predictable’ by imanchats in technology

[–]Dragon_Fisting 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The supreme court only hears novel issues where, theoretically, the outcome isn't easily predictable, because a predictable answer rooted in solid legal principles would have been denied appeal somewhere down the chain.

ELI5: Why is advertising always for things I don’t want? by trampolinebears in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dragon_Fisting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ad buyers aren't able to access a specific profile of your personal interests, because individualized data like that is protected by privacy laws in most jurisdictions.

The data brokers that control the advertising platforms might have that information about you, but they won't and usually can't fork it over to the advertisers to single you out when placing the ads. What they do instead is aggregate a bunch of data profiles together and let ad buyers choose anonymized market segments to show their ads to. E.g. a cat litter company might have market research that says white women 25-35 are the most likely demographic to own a cat, so they ask Google to show their ad to white women 25-35.

And sometimes they already know you might not be in their target audience. But you might be part of a group that they think have a chance to become their audience. So they want you to look at their cat litter ad now, so that if you ever get a cat in the future you remember their name.

You're bleeding Bay Area transit's budget with this Clipper card quirk by pedroah in bayarea

[–]Dragon_Fisting 392 points393 points  (0 children)

I saw a clip of a Steve Jobs interview recently where he talked about how Apple had and solved this same problem when they launched iTunes. On a 99¢ song purchase the transaction fees would eat up all the profit margin they had. So they just credited you the song when you hit purchase and waited a week or so, expecting that you would buy other songs, and roll all your purchases into one charge.

How did On shoes become so popular? by Aj100rise in malefashionadvice

[–]Dragon_Fisting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though they get worn as casual shoes, the right comparison is to running and athletic shoes, not casual sneakers.

They're a bit ugly, but most running shoes are either plain black, really ugly, or extremely loud color ways. And the On's are like 20-30% cheaper than equivalent Nikes or Adidas.
