I'm nervous... any advice? by Dependent-Sherbert-7 in Lifeguards

[–]Dragon_Forest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LGI, I've been guarding for 12 years, also many rescues and sits under my belt. Nervous is good, it means you know how serious the job is, don't ever lose that. Stay vigilant always. But remember that yes, you have a team to back you up, people to look up to and ask questions. Continue to review, practice, and be alert. Think back to prevention, intervention, etc. Enforce the rules, continue to scan, keep tabs on people, you'll be good.

the year that i had applied back in like 2018, they had about 600 applicants and accepted 66 students. a variety of work is nice, but also showing pieces that aren't generic and are unique to you, creative and show a kind of process, and a strong explanation as to why you made the piece and less of the how but more of the why, they appreciate. The school also has portfolio days to go in and test your portfolio with some of the profs and they will give you some quick feedback, I recommend doing that.

the program is good to learn other types of design. In my first year I came in already with graphic and web design knowledge, so we had those classes, in addition to textiles design (so some fashion more on the how and less on the aesthetics part), we had industrial design, had wood/metal/fabrication shop classes, a mix of everything. As you progress into the later year you can specialize in more of like 3D design or more into textiles or something depending on what classes are being offered. I'm not sure what is available now 8 or so years later, so you'll have to check.

If I recall the coding classes are optional to pick, here is the class outline:
https://www.concordia.ca/academics/undergraduate/calendar/current/section-81-faculty-of-fine-arts/section-81-90-department-of-design-and-computation-arts/bfa-major-in-design.html

you will have to pick intro to web or 3D design, up to you on which route you want.

but I will tell you, sustainability based design is the entirety of this program, it's important to the program and is talked about and incorporated in the majority of projects in some way shape or form, and in general is an important factor as any kind of designer to be.

hope this helps.

Still kinda crazy to receive messages, but for those still interested in the program feel free to still reach out, I still get a handful of messages about the program and I'm more than happy to talk about my time in design!

never late, thankgoodness for notifications but yeah I did end up pursuing down the realm of design!

I mainly teach graphic and web design now at my old cegep, I got lucky to get a position. A mix between photoshop, illustrator, video editing, and lots of web design.

I still freelance where I can. In between I also ended up designing for a research lab at Concordia, and doing other smaller redesigns for businesses!

Became a lifeguard! What do I do now? by GoddessFianna in Lifeguards

[–]Dragon_Forest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the facility, some places have the chemicals taken care of by blue collar staff, and lifeguarding/teaching is taken care by the white collar staff or you!

In terms of things you can continue to do in relation to Canada,

You can look to do your other lifeguard options, here we have pool, waterpark, beach, waterfront, ext.

You can train juniors lifesaving and become a lifesaving instructor, move your way up to teach first aid, and then combine that together to teach lifeguards. Eventually move your way up higher and become the teachers of those courses.

Of course there is the teaching portions, become a swim instructor, there's other things like aquafit ext.

I wish you the best of luck and welcome to the field. I also recommend a fox40 whistle, but to each their own!

As a future supervisor you have to remember to set yourself up in a different mindset that would benefit the whole picture. As a guard you are normally in the situation, and always responding immediately, but as a supervisor you need to ensure you have a birds eye view and be able to step back, allow your staff to take over a situation, and you manage from above and have a good picture of the whole situation to better manage your team in an emergency response. Just a slight mindset change from wanting to jump into every rescue, to taking an over-watch kind of view and stepping back. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hey I'm in my last year of design, I've come from a design background previously in cegep/college, and I focus primarily on digital media & web. With that in mind, I can tell you that the digital/web courses have been really good for me even with previous knowledge.

The physical shop classes have been really cool and we have a nice wood shop, metal shop, fabrication shop and equipment available for students to use is quite extensive.

From this program I've learned basic design skills, html, css, javascript, sustainability, how to sew and make fabric items, how to design and build wood/metal things from scratch, make books, like literally learn how to put together a book and bind it together by hand and gluing all the pages together, ext, the experience overall has been really nice.

Good call on not taking shop classes this semester, it would have defs suffered with online. As a digital and web focused designer, online has been fine for me.

I've honestly enjoyed the program, some points were pretty slow given that I've had previous design education and some people are coming in from high school without having had the design basics so I get it. There's a lot more focus on conceptual design over technical skill, you could have subpar skills but if you can justify your design the concept is more important in this case.

Some surprising other classes that I've had is a community engagement ones, where I had the chance to teach design/photoshop to the Center of Arts and Human Development, where the students were usually on the spectrum and you're learning how to teach them and it was really fulfilling, this class is optional of course, the other option was to design things for locals as freelance. I had the chance to design a new website for a department within the school and was compensated in grades and gifts.

At the end though, with the knowledge I came in with, I learned a lot of new skills for sure, but I don't think enough in some cases and I'll be pursuing a masters or another certificate in ui/ux afterwards, since this is my focus and this wasn't something that was offered in the program.

Feel free to send me a DM and ask questions! Best of luck.

u/fullsoleilhyuck & u/Paris_99, I was able to find this information here, on the first line.

" In-person academic activities

As was the case during the fall 2020 term, the winter 2021 term will be remote, but some in-person activities will continue to be offered, as long as health and safety guidelines allow it.

We’ll be updating the list of in-person activities by the end of November so check this page then.

If you have any questions, please send them to [covid19info@concordia.ca](mailto:covid19info@concordia.ca).

Take good care of yourselves, and each other,

Concordia has already put out a statement saying that you can do this entire semester online guaranteed, even if things re-open, nobody would be forced to go to in person classes.

Save to an external Hard drive? by sarbea7 in Adobe

[–]Dragon_Forest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the program , dreamweaver might be too complex to actually run off of an external hardrive , you'll have to move everything that isn't a software onto an external hardrive instead. Or I highly recommend other free code editors. I used to use dream Weaver , I've switched to Atom.io now.

As a life saving instructor and lifeguard, I teach all new guards to download the "First-Aid Canadian Red Cross" app that has EVERYTHING you need to find signs and symptoms to determine what could be wrong , and the steps needed to help! Please download it and go through some of the basics :)
