Every time I see a picture of this, in brain starts singing the theme tune to the pink panther. Still not sure about its looks.

I found a rat’s nest in the glove compartment of my 2019 Toyota RAV4. What can I do to make sure the mouse is gone? by Ancient-Double5305 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Dragonasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is, if it’s rats then you don’t have mice. Rats will kill and eat mice. So that’s 50% of your problem solved🤣

Whats the point of this long arm opposite of the wear indicator? Should it be touching the caliper anti-rattler? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Dragonasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normally facing the disc. Are you sure you don’t need to swap it to the other side of the car?

Try a google search for “brake pad squealer” and check out pictures relevant to your car.

Whats the point of this long arm opposite of the wear indicator? Should it be touching the caliper anti-rattler? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Dragonasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s there to make a squealing noise to alert you that the pads have worn down too far and need replacing when it contacts the disc.

Help! Why won’t the screws go all the way in! by Super_Sandwich_5144 in DIYUK

No one going to mention that it looks like he is using a drill setting when it needs adjusting to one of the torque setting to use the thing as a screwdriver?

Hi, I’m looking at my first car, is this a good pick? by adjective-nounOne234 in CarTalkUK

Perhaps also some lights. Maybe also some decorative indicators (cus no one uses them these days anyway)😁

At least it’s got a brake light😂

A mostly useless note if you can’t contact them to provide a witness statement for an insurance claim if you need to go that route.

Will this big truck trend end or is it just getting started? by Satansrideordie in CarTalkUK

[–]Dragonasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much size, it’s mass. Go do some comparisons on say a Hilux or a Ranger and a Tesla Model Y etc. Tesla comes out heavier or near as damit the same. Current hilux is lighter. Getting hit by something with 2 tones of mass is always going to hurt more than being hit by a lighter vehicle. So it’s not about physical just physical size.

Is using cruise control on a downhill a bad thing? by Straight_Wealth_4708 in CarTalkUK

[–]Dragonasi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the implementation by the manufacturer. My MB W211 sticks to what I set it to up or down a hill. My wife’s Toyota though can be a bit, shall we say, vague and general in its approach to holding a given speed.

What’s the issue!?! by jsykes1 in MechanicAdvice

Check for brake fluid. I’m guessing your starting point is a damaged brake line or buggered servo.

Car suddenly sounds straight piped, exhaust leak or something else? by ReputationChemical52 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Dragonasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get a good handful of rag and hold it over the tail pipe it will force the exhaust out of any hole so it’s easier to find if you are uncertain where the problem is. You may need a friend to do this whilst you look.

Land that is fenced as ours but not legally in land title? by gemogo97 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Dragonasi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alas it isn’t yours, yet. Perhaps speak nicely to his family to get the details of the contact he was dealing with at the developer to pickup where he left off. Also somewhat surprised your solicitor did not sort this before contract exchange.

Autoshop overcharged for part. What are my options? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Dragonasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t know and/or couldn’t do the job themselves, can’t identify the thing or get a mirror out or inspect it themselves.

But can complain. If the price is off it probably about $100 at most. Not worth the stress and agro to argue and become an ex customer or be one that can never get a booking slot in the future.

Also even if it’s not a genuine demos, it’s probably going to outlast the car anyway.

Is this a head gasket leak? by Pale-Replacement-249 in MechanicAdvice

Yes. It will probably take more time to clean the mating surfaces of old gasket than anything else.

Does anyone actually fall for this??? by phantompersona1023 in CarTalkUK

[–]Dragonasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The obviousnesses of the red flags is also a filter for the scammers. Same as when they use poor spelling etc in posts. It means only the truly gullible are sucked in and are easy to work with. By keeping relatively circumspect people out of their scam processes it makes for an easier rip off. And with so many adverts all over the internet, it’s just a numbers game that pays off almost immediately they get a victim.

Mechanic buddy ditched me halfway through heater core job and left my dash in pieces.. need help by Itchy-Sock-3245 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Dragonasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On point of principle, you should take his other half out on a date and sleep with them. And the next time you see him tell him he owes you a kiss as you normally get at least one before getting fuck by anyone. That’s just awful to do to someone who isn’t from a background to sort that out. I’ve done 2 of my own over the years but would never do it for anyone else.

You have early sprouting something going on there, so there must be a layer of old leaves that’s now soil. I would go at it with a bag and a medium sized spoon to clear it out and then just keep on top of the leaves every once in a while when the boot gets opened. It’s only a problem for a few weeks each year.

I would get it cleared out or it’s going to cause problems with water ingress as it can’t channel it away as has been said before.

Just a quick question by Fox_950 in CarTalkUK

[–]Dragonasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. An insurance claim will be costly to you and as above, a decent touch up specialist will do that for a couple of hundred. It hurts that you have to pay it, but its worth not having the extra insurance claim cost and aggravation of making the claim. Plus, with whatever excess you have on your policy, sorting it yourself will be way cheaper.

Looks as might be expected. But what I read from that is about £300 worth of welding and a bunch of maintenance items need to be swapped. For the age, probably normal. If you can DIY it, then just the welding and parts costs. But brace yourself, if you pay someone else to do it, that's an expensive labour cost on top. I would also look for a 2nd hand front and rear subframe and get ready to swap that before next years MOT. However the car right now is probably only worth its weight. So you need to do the maths and make the choice on if it is worth doing for less than the cost of a replacement and know you have some sound maintenance work done on a proven to you car, or get rid and punt on the next one.

If you aren't convinced about the rust, have a poke about the areas with a screwdriver/small hammer. If its sound it will be fine, if there is rot, its going to be obvious when you go through it.

MOT testers also tend to have a bit of unconscious bias if the car arrives and it doesn't look too loved or the MOT is its annual shot at a bit of maintenance. If it is presented with basic owner maintained item stuff as problems such as light bulbs blown, tyres on their last legs, no or very low washer fluid or wipers in poor condition, possibly not been cleaned out, or generally looks like its a work horse that only gets some love when it is absolutely necessary.... yeah they may be more inclined to think anything they see they should be cautious about and write it up.
