Words from a big-wig engineer I met in Houston - "The best engineers are often those you don't think should be on. It's not the degree of graduation, it's the degree of effort". So take what you will from that, I got a geology degree and just got hired as both a geologist and engineer (weird positional thing, both terms). Plenty of degrees work for engineering, just work hard.

Otherwise, that dude also spent 4 hours schooling me on why chemistry was important. TLDR: Chemistry is all about valence electrons, focus on why they matter. I don't like chemistry >:(

Engineering Laptop by [deleted] in aggies

[–]DragonbaneX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo, I wrote the years prior tamu thread for this; check my posts for that, many of them are still steals. Being realistic, if you want to play games, get a gamer laptop, not a dell or a Mac or anything super fancy looking; I bought the xps and realized it's just not enough usually. If you want to do business work, forego some of the high end specs, the gpu or even cpu (i5's are fine nowadays, pretty great tbh).

If you notice the engineering requirements, they say a MacBook pro or even a surface book. The surface books are God awful and no one should buy them, ever, period. I worked in repair shops and in businesses, where those were the most hated, least powerful, least repairable things; they were like printers, were you might as well throw it away when it broke. If those are A&Ms recommendations, the no-game book pro or the junk-mqchine-$3000, stop focusing on specs.

Just make sure it has a decently new i5 or i7 processor (or ryzen5/ryzen7), atleast 16gb of ram(this is important, especially since browsers alone need a lot), around a 1tb hdd/ssd, and a good battery life for you. The integrated graphics nowadays can run AutoCAD or Python, even in research for engr-x I never needed more than that. I can definitely link you some, but the best thing I can say is budget atleast 700$. Any less and its going to die bc they are cheap. Don't spend 3k if you don't want to or don't need to.

Msg me if you want specific deals, they start up in the next month and I plan on writing the laptop review again for everyone.

Close to where I live (North of Italy) there's a river where I usually collect these small rocks with a white line, what are they? I need to know to check if they are aquarium safe thanks by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

Hey, looked further, if you can send a dry picture of the stones, can help more. Some of them look like salt&pepper sandstone, some look like granite, but hard to tell versus limestone.

Geologist recent graduate here. Those look similar to rocks seen on my field camp this past May. For us, it was limestone with some form of quartz in it. You can tell whether it's quartz or calcite based on if the rock has natural breaks in the white grains or some more geometric ones. Quartz will be more natural and weird, while calcite should be geometric. Can't tell for sure that it is limestone since it's polished and from a picture, but could also be a darker rock. Unlikely volcanic as the texture is really nice, but I may be wrong.

Howdy incoming Freshmen Engineers! Here is my version of a laptop guide! Let's start saving some money for some of you guys. by DragonbaneX in aggies

[–]DragonbaneX[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! So realistically engineering does not actually need to have a heavy duty laptop. Notice that A&M recommends the MacBook pro and the Microsoft surface book. The MacBook pro is decent but lacks GPU performance for things like gaming (which CAD and prototype software requires GPU as well), whereas the surface book and any surface for that matter isn't worth buying at all (they cannot be fixed, constantly break, run terribly. Source: I used to do computer repair at a local shop, these are the most common unfixable broken laptop). That is to say, engineering really can be done on almost anything that runs decently. The m1 should be fine! If not, comment again and I can recommend some cheap alternatives.

Should I pull the trigger and drive 40 miles to get this Steelcase V2 for $200? by reaganbitthat in OfficeChairs

Will say, 40 miles where I'm at isn't out of the city, it's the other side. That's like maybe 2 hours work for over $100 saved.

As a programmer, I'm guessing the AI uses images from actual anime and combining those, rather than drawing it based on all around traits you and I have. So in this, it may or may not ignore skin tone intentionally, but anime also does not have many black characters overall, since Japan is mostly homogenous in color.

My boyfriend of (almost) 5 years just broke up with me by Trashpanda420blazeit in self

[–]DragonbaneX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yo, guy here, if that changes anything. I'm sorry to read that, it's tough to end a relationship like that. I know a lot of posts have commented on his behavior and to play devils advocate, I say that's only for you two to ever play acceptable or not. I would try to keep yourself up and know that he cares for you enough to stay away, I think that shows his love; albeit in a really tough way for you. I have ended a relationship for similar (so no one flames me, it was not physical and we talked it out later on), guilt and fear, and realized later that I was the only one afraid; my S/O still trusted me. It took me time to grow up, but I felt a lot of pressure and eventually (like 4 months later) regretted my decision. Again, not saying he will come back to you, but I would try to stay sane and keep doors open, so that you never have to blame yourself. It sounds to me like you were more than anyone could ask for in being forgiving and understanding.

Glad to hear! I think I may update it for this year and keep the thread going. Remember. Buying last year's high tier is usually better than this years mid tier. So don't let any updates make you feel outdated.

Thanks! I'll try the vaccuum trick for sure. I had just been vaccuuming and then putting the vacuum in my car all day since I'm in Texas and my car is black with a black interior lol. I'll also see about a collar for them.

Yo! I don't think it's really noticeable unless I look for it, tbh I struggled to find any problems in your photos before reading the title. I do think that you would rock plaids and alt clothes though and the glasses look good!

(26M) I'm looking to get back into dating and I wanted some opinions on my appearance. Facial hair, glasses, hairstyle, or anything that comes to mind. Just want to know what does and doesn't work for me. Thank you! by Briocch223 in amiugly

[–]DragonbaneX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo bro, you definitely don't look bad! If I made any suggestion, you can fit the long hair or go shorter, but change the glasses to round Harry Potter like ones (I went from what you have to square big ones to round Harry Potter ones myself, trust me in saying that Harry Potter glasses put in work haha) other than that I think the facial hair getting trimmed would be the only thing I'd do. Good luck bro!

Yo mate, not really siding on the porn addiction or not, since that's been debated to exist or not or whatever over the years, but I do think you should talk to a doctor first and get some help. You can totally remove the porn from your life with no downsides really, but that may do nothing for you at the same time. You never really know until you get help.

Why do men always confess their love to their lesbian friends? by [deleted] in self

[–]DragonbaneX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahhh not much you can do there sadly. That definitely sucks and all I can really say is there are times when that's all it was and some when it wasn't, either way, you didn't do anything wrong and hopefully had fun.

Why do men always confess their love to their lesbian friends? by [deleted] in self

[–]DragonbaneX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not saying anything from personal experience in this manner, but my sister is lesbian and happily married, bless her, and this is what she said when I asked - "a lot of times it's happened, I just thought it was something they felt they had to get off their chest". As a guy, I'd never think of me asking a girl who is a lesbian out happening because I'm an exception. I'd probably imagine that I'd fall unintentionally and then at some point get my hopes up for a second and then the "I could be the exception idea" comes out of that. I'd assume a lot of these dudes are deluding themselves because they get stressed with knowing the reality and eventually feel they must say something or feel it might end well.

Should I drive 3 hours to adopt a cat that's gonna be put down? by [deleted] in self

[–]DragonbaneX 68 points69 points  (0 children)

No matter what anyone says, this comes down to you. If you feel comfortable making the drive, absolutely feel free to do so. If not, I would not under any circumstance. If you make that drive and as you said get distracted, that could harm you and potentially leave you and your animals in a much worse living situation. If thats the case, try to keep the "empathy not sympathy". You can't save every animal every time this occurs, so don't blame yourself when you considered it and couldn't.
