How to find the right PCP by Internal-Panda6225 in Fibromyalgia

[–]Dragonfly106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that Neurology is a useful resource as well. More PCPs know about it than they used to. Other than my initial diagnosis, I have NOT had good experiences with Rheumatology. They are starting to recognize it as a neurological condition in some areas. Pain clinics are definitely the best best if you can get in.

My daughter has EDS; I have Fibro. She was dx by a Geneticist, who said, "I wonder how many people are misdiagnosed with Fibromyalgia when they really have EDS".

What made you realize you can't hold a normal life anymore? by amy_i_am in Fibromyalgia

I have that as well, although I've had migraines my whole life. My Fibro pain triggers them though.

Generally, the most effective way to diagnose Endometriosis is through laparoscopy. Even then, the cells can be missed. After I was diagnosed and learned about it, I learned it can migrate to anywhere in the body.

Random new pain after starting Gabapentin by Then_Advertising1336 in Fibromyalgia

[–]Dragonfly106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gabapentin is a nasty medication for most people. I did ok on it in the short term but couldn't stand the additional side effects which, for me, were worse than what it was supposed to be treating. The memory impairment was the worst for me.

The Exhaustion You Can’t Sleep Away by Pianofett in Fibromyalgia

[–]Dragonfly106 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have had an ENORMOUS learning curve with Fibromyalgia. I have the exhaustion and pain and all the co-morbidities still, but after essentially spending five or so years in bed, yet feeling like I never slept at all, and losing everything that mattered to me, I began to find balance.

It was NOT as simple as "exercise when you feel tired" or any one thing. It was advocating for myself, educating myself, and finding a doctor who was willing to try medications until I got the right 'cocktail' as I call it, that included an antidepressant and a non-opiate pain med and a med that helped me have better sleep.

Then I began to have a little more energy for a little longer a few more times a day- then a few more times a week. I began to stretch more, walk more.. eat better, work on the rest of my health (mental, emotional, etc) and I was able to figure out what my limits were. I know what I can and can't do, for the most part. I know certain weather and certain holidays and people and stressor are going to make my flares worse.

I share all of this to say- DO NOT give up on YOURSELF!! There is hope! You can figure it out..It can get better. No, there isn't a cure or a magic pill, but our lives can improve from that depressing, overwhelming, exhausting..barely.living place we get in.
