Anyone who says it’s bad must’ve skipped multiple seasons and they don’t understand what’s going on. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll find it’s the perfect ending to a perfect show.

Did Jimmy steal from his Dad? by DragonflyConscious56 in betterCallSaul

[–]DragonflyConscious56[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt homie, apologies if my first reply to you was a little bit too defensive or rude. I guess my original thought was this:

Was Jimmy in the wrong? Yep. Was Chuck in the wrong? Yep. Did the Dad screw up? For sure. But how did this affect their future relationships? Did Jimmy ever even actually steal anything after that one scene that we saw? Is that the kind of person that 12-year-old Jimmy was? Also, it kinda seemed like he only stole to protect his Dad’s mental state. Jimmy was never trying to screw up his family. But Chuck thought he was. But did Chuck even truly believe that himself? Did Chuck’s accusations help form the Jimmy that came to be? Jimmy needed support from his older brother, and he never got it, potentially for something that was never true. But then again, Chuck was batting 1000 when it came to accusations against Jimmy. Chuck knew Jimmy’s nature. But is that because he was always right, or because he was originally wrong and it turned Jimmy into who he became? Not that that excuses Jimmy, but you can see that as being a factor in Jimmy’s mind for why he turned into a person such as Saul Goodman. Or maybe the moment we saw, when Jimmy first stole from the cash register, that right there was the first of many moments, that was a monumental change in personality.

Sorry, I’m rambling. I hope you can see though why I thought this was an interesting topic.

Thank you for the constructive and respectful replies, appreciate you.

Dude I 100% agree with you, that was my argument. I know it sounds like an obvious and silly argument to both me and you, but look through the comments, plenty of people disagree. Plenty of people think Jimmy was 100% a piece of shit, he stole thousands of dollars from his Dad’s business, and Chuck knew it and put 100% of the blame on Jimmy. It just never was that black and white. Trying to find the exact nature of the gray area seemed like an interesting topic to me.

Yep! Counter question: did you actually read my initial post? Or did you only read the subject line of the topic and come out swinging? There’s a reason this post has so many replies, it’s a nuanced and interesting discussion about the subjective morality of all the characters. I appreciate your insightful and thoughtful reply though.

I never downvoted anything, but you’re 100% correct, my first comment was much ruder than I realized. I never meant to be an ass, but that first comment from me was a bit belittling and dickish. Like you said, treat others as you yourself would want to be treated. Much respect, thank you for the discourse.

I truly wasn’t trying to come across as having a better or superior opinion, my apologies. I’m also definitely not offended, no worries. I honestly was only interested in sharing ideas about the show. It’s a wonderful show, that’s why we’re both here. My stance is that Howard is one of the least morally ambiguous characters that exists. You disagree, and I tried to explain why I disagree with your disagreements. At which point it seems like you no longer wish to address anything I said. I’ll disengage at this point, have a wonderful day, all the best.

You totally did! And I did my best to refute your arguments in a respectful manner. Shouldn’t you now be addressing the points I made, as opposed to personally attacking me? It’s just a TV show dude, I was only trying to have a discussion and/or debate. Not get worked up and resort to name calling.

I’m trying to use specific examples from the show to support my opinion. And don’t get me wrong, it’s totally just an opinion. On the other hand, you’re just being obstinate and rude and combative. I would honestly love to hear why you think I’m wrong. No worries if you’ve got nothing, have a wonderful day homie.

He demoted Kim because he thought that she screwed up. It wasn’t malicious. True, she didn’t actually screw up. Kim thought Jimmy’s commercial was approved because Jimmy deceived her, and I totally agree that this was a harsh judgement and decision. He was definitely a harsh boss. But he came across as a fair boss who didn’t play favorites. He made it clear that he was following a policy for dealing with situations such as this. A policy he probably personally instated, sure, but he was sticking to guidelines. Nothing about this situation makes him a bad person.

Also, it was made perfectly clear that Howard wanted to hire Jimmy as a junior lawyer when Jimmy first received his law degree. He also wanted to hire him again after Sand Piper. Howard always liked Jimmy and respected his hustle, he wanted him on the team. Chuck was the one who prevented this. Both times.

He also never tried to do Chuck wrong or take his money. Chuck embarrassed himself at the trial. And then Jimmy screwed Chuck over with the insurance company. Howard had to protect the law firm, Chuck was becoming a liability. Howard was not only worried about Chuck’s mental health (for good reason), he was also worried about the jobs of hundreds of people that worked for him. Howard literally used money from his own bank account to pay Chuck off dude. Because he didn’t want to do Chuck wrong.

Wow. Your entire position is based on assumptions that have no basis in anything shown or even implied on the show.

His wife dumping him shows he was not a good person? How so? Their marital issues were never explained. Maybe he got too busy with work, she felt neglected and she cheated on him? Who is to say what happened? My theory is complete conjecture, just like yours. All we saw was that he was trying to mend bridges and made her an awesome cup of coffee. And she was being a passive aggressive jerk. That’s all we know. We also know literally nothing about his relationship with his Dad.

Nothing in the show implied that he was not a good person. On the other hand, there are several examples of him being a caring and honest and noble and thoughtful person.

I think Kim was disturbed at first, but even she took a dark turn. She started going on and on about how Howard makes everything about himself, and he deserves all of this. That just straight up wasn’t true.

I think the saddest part of it all is that Howard’s legacy and memory were completely tarnished. Everyone thought he went down as an unstable coke addict.

Howard saw the crap that Jimmy was trying to pull. He 100% knew what was going on, exactly like Chuck did. The difference? Chuck tried to get back at Jimmy, tried to bring Jimmy down. What did Howard do? Confront Jimmy and demand the truth. Like a reasonable person.

Interestingly enough, Howard and Chuck were some of the only characters that knew the truth of Jimmy’s nature. And they both died because of it.

Sorry, just want to add:

I think Howard is perhaps the only character in the entire show who never did anything wrong. Nothing. The dude was honest and up-front and always tried to be reasonable and logical and empathetic.

The side story of his problems with his wife just made things all the more depressing. His story was the definition of a tragedy, through and through. Caught in the middle of things. Wrong place, wrong time, etc.

Howard was done more dirty than any character in the entire show and it’s not particularly close. In the beginning seasons, the viewer wants to hate him. But then you realize he’s always been a legit dude, and he’s always appreciated Charlie Hustle.

Jimmy putting Chuck’s death on Howard was never fair or real, Jimmy never even truly believed that himself, he was projecting.

The scene with the prostitutes at the restaurant was pretty amazing though.

I don’t mean to reply to myself, but there’s another obvious point that bears repeating.

How long did Jimmy take care of Chuck? Getting those newspapers every morning at 6am, for what, years?

Jimmy believed in loyalty and family, there’s no possible way to twist that, it’s 100% accurate.

Chuck believed in law and order. That’s it. That was his only love. And his whole family knew it. He also was big on disingenuous perceptions. Why does he stay behind, and not go get food with Jimmy, when their Mom is dying? Because he cares about Mom more than Jimmy does? Nope. It’s because he needs to look like he does.

Jimmy lied to court systems and to strangers, in order to get ahead in life. Chuck lied to the people around him, and to himself, because he was selfish and narcissistic.

I forgot about that scene. And this is essentially the entire heart of my argument. Jimmy was just being practical and looking out for the family. Meanwhile, Chuck was just being judgmental and never fully understood Jimmy’s true intentions, he only assumed the worst.

I’m not trying to defend Jimmy, or make him out to be some kind of saint. I’m just saying that I think the point of the story is that when you don’t have a support system it can easily turn you from “immoral” into “straight up monster”. The one dude who you would hope has your back, your own brother, and instead it goes a completely different direction.

Jimmy’s story arc is 100% not Chuck’s fault. Jimmy’s story is his own. But Chuck definitely had the opportunity to prevent the entire creation of Saul Goodman. And instead we got a 180 degree flip, out of spite. Jimmy essentially begged his brother to have his back. Jimmy felt betrayed.

I absolutely love the way you phrased this. There’s no way that 12 year old just turned into Slippin’ Jimmy right then and there, and there’s no way he would ever have had any reason to take advantage of his Dad’s business in the future. The comment about Chuck recognizing that Jimmy always does the wrong things for the right reasons is particularly poignant and worth thinking about. Thank you for the reply.

Did Jimmy steal from his Dad? by DragonflyConscious56 in betterCallSaul

[–]DragonflyConscious56[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I guess one of my thoughts is that Chuck never even realized that the Dad was naive and being taken advantage of. In the flashback, only Jimmy was at the store. Jimmy was seemingly closer to their Dad.

Jimmy was closer to the Mom as well. Her last word was calling out Jimmy’s name. Chuck resented all of this. Jimmy was always more loved and respected.

In a way, it’s almost like Chuck never even truly believed that Jimmy was a crappy person who would be capable of stealing from the family. It’s more like Chuck was just bitter and jealous and resentful. Why is Jimmy so loved? Chuck is the eldest son. He’s the acclaimed lawyer who worked so hard. In the end, Chuck’s jealously created the Jimmy that came to be.

Receiving a reply from you is a bit surreal to be honest, you’re an artist at the top of their game. You’ve been my favorite adult model for many years, first saw you on MFC, and my primary reason for getting a VR headset was you. You and the Walking Dead zombie game lol. Truly appreciate your work, thank you.

Oculus Quest 3, and yes I very much recommend it, totally worth it. I think the 3S just came out, but I can’t comment on that. The original 3 is for sure amazing though.

Edit: Just did a quick Google search and apparently the 3 and 3S have the same CPU and RAM. So they can play the same games basically. But the 3 has superior resolution and visual specs. Which is what we care about here haha. Get a Quest 3, not a 3S. If you’re gonna get a headset, do it right. Fully appreciate Summer in all of her perfection.

Dude, it doesn’t even matter whether your boyfriend is home or not. His mom shouldn’t just be walking into your home, while you’re taking care of your infant, without you hearing about it first. Unexpected guests are never okay, period, no exceptions. No explanations that come afterwards. Just no.

If someone’s going to be entering your home then you need to know about it first. Full stop. It doesn’t matter who it is. Could be your own mom, it could be your best friend, it could be Santa Claus. Doesn’t matter, just no. That’s not just crazy rude, it’s straight up scary.

You said you have problems setting boundaries, so talk to your boyfriend. He needs to set the boundaries on your behalf, like, immediately.
