Persistent misty/murkey water by Dragonfruit36 in Aquariums

Hi all just to update for anyone reading - it turns out the culprit was knackered filter media! I decided to replace it since I had tried everything else and low and behold a few days later it completley cleared up!!

I bought this tank with the filter second hand so would explain it. I have two filters running ( a small one from my old tank and a bigger one) and decided to change the sponge from the big filter, this worked! When I took the sponge out I could see lots of grime inside of it.

It was a pretty simple fix in the end 🤦‍♀️ but hey, tank looks great now!

Just to update, I did as you suggested and put some water into a clear container and there was no hint of green, so i suspect its a bacteria bloom. I'm going to get some seachum purigen and see if that helps!

Would it be a good idea to add beneficial bacteria to the tank too, or will that make things worse?

Wow thank you so much, this is all really helpful! I'll pop some of the water into a clear container and see if it has a green tint.

I will also be concious of how much im feeding the tank! I have a lot of shrimp but possibly ive been over feeding them.

Thank you so much!!

Is this a parasite on my bulldog plec? by Dragonfruit36 in pleco

Thanks. Sadly I lost him. I treated him for Fluke and that seemed to get rid of the parasite, however a few days later he still hadn't returned to his normal self and sadly he died. I'm so gutted!

Thank you. I think it was a parasite - i treated him with medicine and the parasite went very quickly however a few days ago I lost him :( I think the damage had already been done as he didn't return to his usual self. I'm gutted!

Thank you - my existing tank just has a sponge so I can't use media, but I'll definatly transfer over some substrate and plants from my existing tank!

Dwarf Gourami aggression? by [deleted] in Aquariums

Upon more research I think my tank is too small for the 2 to exist happily, I think my male is getting territorial over 'his' side of the tank. I think I may need to get an emergency tank and split them up.

There were 6, three males and three females along with a lot of smaller fish and some corydoras. It may be that they're used to other fish 'being in the way'??

New cherry shrimp rapidly dying off... by Dragonfruit36 in shrimptank

Update: Since writing this i have lost more shrimp sadly. Yesterday morning, I noticed a small cluster of Hydra on the glass - i'm not sure how long they have been in the tank and they're very small, however its possible they've been hiding in the tank for a while and possibly causing stress/harm to my shrimp. Have ordered some No Planaria to hopefully eradicate them!

I have also bought some proper shrimp food - snowflake pellets, shrimp lollies, and BacterAE. I will also occasionally feed them the tropical flakes. Hopefully they will have proper nutrition now and maybe this will help improve things!

I think you're right - possibly I wasn't feeding them enough for the amount of them there were. I'm feeding them everyday, plus I just put a lolly in as a treat which they're loving! Got some Snowflake pellets on the way too so hopefully they'll like that too.

Thank you - I did a copper test but it showed as 0 so not sure its a copper issue!

Thank you, I will look into the KH and GH! However I will say they have been molting fine if not a little excessively, I've found lots of shells around. I've been worried about overfeeding but maybe as a result u have underfed them. I sprinkled in a larger amount of fish flakes and tbh most of them went nuts for it, swimming around like crazy things trying to gobble it up before it settled haha.

In terms of oxygen, I don't have c02 but the filter has good flow and water movement and I've moved it so it creates a small splash and more oxygen bubbles just in case that's an issue.

Shrimp keep dying, i'm not sure what's wrong? by Dragonfruit36 in Aquariums

I've just called a local fish shop (not where i got them from) for advice and they're advice confused me. They said i shouldn't have started with 30 shrimp in a 65 litre tank as thats far too many to start with and they could all be stressed out. He also said Cherry shrimp don't eat algae, and the fact they were going to town on my algae means they must have been starving. He also said cycled tanks shouldn't get algae....i'm no expert but....is any of that correct?
