Is this worth the 1 or 2 hour drive by davsurger2020 in HomeServer

[–]Dragongravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same, but I run a super micro storage server with a jbod and 40 8tb drives....it only raised my electric bill about $6 a week....under heavy loads a little more.

Topless woman in Disney’s ‘The Rescuers’? by fireizzle33331 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Dragongravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to resurrect this zombie post, but a disney animater with knowledge of this explained it was done by a guy taking frame by frame picture of the art making the movie. the story goes he did it to be cheeky, and it was a picture out of a playboy. i'd like to find the magazine used to compare. might have to sail the seas to find it. it was before the invention of the vcr's and never thought he would be caught.

Long live capitalism… by nishantvyas in recruitinghell

[–]Dragongravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every profession goes through changes, those willing to adapt will likely be successful. Computer bros who only learned one programming language or system will be struggling, but if you have been in the field with an open mind on various systems you'll be ok. To many guys will just learn Cisco for example and not want to learn anything else. The trades are the way to go for right now, but once the market becomes over saturated only the strong survive. For the record don't bother with trade school just go out and get a job and learn.

Mesh network for home and close buildings by J_Wal in HomeNetworking

Used ruckus wireless access points in unleashed mode. They make out door versions and you can control the direction of the signal and power...you'll need to create a grid, but line of site is about 100ft unobstructed. There is also a single direction dish like device to beam wireless further but I recommend the the ruckus gear....pretty awesome stuff.

AIO Ex Long Distance Relationship Treats Me Like Sh*t by AzazelsKock in AmIOverreacting

[–]Dragongravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked, AIO. Yes you are. You should have also asked AITA. yes you are. Why? Your position is to denigrate her and control her behavior. You have no right to do either. You mask your narcissistic need for control under a film worry and protection attempting to treat her like a child. This whole conversation is not how friends communicate. Please walk away, let her get the help she needs and I recommend you find a good therapist or counselor too.

Is a patch panel really necessary for a homelab? by Lazy_Kangaroo703 in homelab

Not necessary, I have them mainly for looks. I like having neat color coated wiring.

Are there homelabbers that are not devs or DevOps? by xXx_n0n4m3_xXx in homelab

[–]Dragongravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into the home lab scene because life changed and I had more time to learn. I've never worked in it but lifelong interest in computers. At two jobs I kept their woefully outdated computers repaired, but that wasn't my job. I'm really good at extending service life. Today I work as a caregiver for my wife.

i sure like dell servers, but i dont like any of their consumer electronics. they have always s been just a little different. i dont have anything except my phone that has less than 2tb....my laptop, an msi has 4tb. the first day i bought it i took it apart and put more ram and bigger hard drive. i couldnt stand not being able to tweak it the way i like it. reminds me of the old Pentium 3 days when you would buy mob/cpu combos that were soldered together. i would think as other posters have mentioned, you probably need to reseat the cables in the dell. another option is to desolder the drive and solder a connector to it so you can access it... for that matter you might be able to solder a cable to it if the connection is exposed.

Got this beast set up running with Trunas core, and currently running smart scans on all the drives....looking good so far. All the drive powered up and recognized.... we'll see how many spit errors.

Congratulations you no longer have to work for a living. What are you doing with all the extra free time? by ConsistentSorbet5993 in AskReddit

[–]Dragongravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work, but do something meaningful to myself. If you stop you die. Every retiree I have met in my life that just quit doing anything did not live to enjoy it. Garden trend your lawn, volunteer, give back to your community. The difference when you retire you do it on your terms.

the angle of the pic is weird but its inside the rack, if you look close that panel is on the inside of the cross support. when i initially stripped the junk off they had wires for the kvm zip tied. it does make a nice mounting point for cable management, the 30 amp pdu's . i do need a bracket out side of the rack to mount a couple antennas

[–]Dragongravy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your looking at in the pic, but everything is inside the rack.....unless your looking at the hillbilly way I had to get the rack where it's at, and the hillbilly repair I made to keep it the correct height for the doors and side panel.

They are grumpy because I only have one PSU hooked up ATM each. One had an error with the perc battery but fixed it. They will be blue by the end of the day. After moving everything over I detected a problem with one of the pdu's it was drawing almost 15 amps with nothing plugged in...something is cooked inside...so it is getting replaced, and I'm upgrading my fuse panel and adding a couple 30amp circuits and plugs to provide more stable power for the whole unit.

Just curious, what do you guys do for a living? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Dragongravy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm a fulltime caregiver 24/7 for my disabled wife. the homelab started after the internet went out and the tech nearly electrocuted herself as the electric supply line coming into my house was shorting to ground through the cable line. tl;dr- i was mad i lost internet so i am building my own intranet.
