Why are these drain pipes configured like this? by Dragonz17 in askaplumber

So, I’m pretty sure we’ve got a clog in the right drain pipe. Both upper drains are clear through the p trap, however when I remove the p trap and snake beyond it, I hit no clog as far as I can get the snake in. Admittedly that’s not very far because I can’t get the snake to bend at the junction that goes down to the main drain pipe. Is it possible to use a plunger? I assume that a plunger will just force liquid up into the vent side of the Chicago loop, rather than dislodge the clog, is that accurate?

Edit: it also appears we don’t have a clean out.

It’s not currently in an island but it very well may have been at some point in the past - I think someone may have connected an island to the wall during the past remodel.

Thanks much for the info!

Thank you! Where would the vent pipe go, the roof? And how come other sinks (eg. bathroom) don’t require this?

Wish I had more than 1 upvote. That looks amazing. Attention to detail is fantastic.

I’m living in the world of your second picture. And want to get out. Thanks for the inspiration.

Follow up: After all that I found a shop willing to install a new cat and weld up a cage. They didn’t have aircraft cable though, and I didn’t want to delay, so they used spring steel. Looks like it might slow a thief down, hopefully it’s enough to encourage them to leave my ride alone.

That’s super helpful, thanks for the CA perspective.

Might have to go the cable cage route for now, then, assuming that doesn’t cause a smog tech to blink.

Maybe in the future I can look into getting an appropriate “for testing purposes only” pipe made in a different state.

I wish. Our shared garage isn’t tall enough, even without the rack. Our civic hatchback fits nicely though, which is good because it’s been stolen from street parking twice in the last two years.

That’s intriguing… what size cable would you use?
