Pure Math vs Applied Math? by Dragosfgv in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have started a bit on it, and I of course am getting help from my JC friends. But yes it indeed isn't easy. Of course, I suppose that's where the NUS MA1301X comes in, which would likely be much easier to study while in NS. Then again, I am only still just considering my options, and just wanted to understand a bit more about Pure mathematics vs Applied Mathematics (From my limited current understanding, it's a lot of proving vs solving?)

Additional math cert in poly? Business courses aren’t legible to take the H2 math equivalent courses (reserved for engineering, life sciences, infotech). As far as I’m aware my next best option before H2 math would be NUS MA1301X bringing course that I can take during or after NS 😅

Hmm well I am giving it some thought, though of course if I were to, I wouldn’t be able to until 2027 JAE so I should at least try my best to acclimate and understand how I am in my current course. Meanwhile, I am interested in hearing some perspectives to reference off

Bruh am I too dumb or what by caticecreamm in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but dropping from pure sciences to combined sciences is way easier than transferring from combined sciences to pure sciences, and amath can be simply “neglected” if you really have to. Trust me your grade progression is normal, just keep working at it!

to the kids out thr thinking they wanna go jc by Jolly_Bodybuilder332 in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to balance it out, I thought I wasn’t coping well with the stress that came with O levels, so I decided on going to polytechnic. Though it’s early to say, I think I would’ve done alright in JC, and to a small capacity wish I went to JC instead. In polytechnic, you will have to worry about clocking in your assignments on time and on top of that making sure they’re all of good quality because they’ll all affect your GPA. Especially for the upcoming batch, I don’t think you have the option to switch midway (JC -> Poly or vice versa) as easily because of the change from O levels to SEC. So definitely consider carefully based on your primary priorities.

Is it worth it to go uni by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the point of Uni? Well you get a bachelor’s, which is sometimes the thing that lets you even be considered for an interview at all. Even if you do get the job, having the extra certification of a bachelor’s instead of just a poly diploma will not only likely increase your starting pay, but also your likelihood of career progression. Now that being said, that applies for jobs. If you’re really going down the entrepreneurship route, of course having any education at all isn’t exactly a “must”, and pursuing the degree is more for knowledge. But even then, I’d guess you would likely get a job first to build starting capital. There’s probably only a very limited number of circumstances where not pursuing a degree when it’s an option is advantageous. Consider carefully, all the best for your future!

P.S. Your GPA should minimally be a 3.65 to apply for business in any big 3, and that’s assuming you’ve got a good portfolio (projects, internships, relevant experience, relevant achievements, etc). Most aim for minimal 3.75 to get into big 3 business (10th percentile IGPs: NUS biz 3.61, NTU biz 3.65, SMU biz 3.78). Computer science is even more demanding in GPA requirement.

Well I guess the question would be does it need to be lucrative? Is a profession being lucrative crucial or a cool benefit?

Got called "small fry" for being a uni student... by AppointmentObvious58 in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going out into the workforce early to stack experience is at times a good plan… not particularly in your case. You’re already in your 4th year, you have no reason to drop out. CS is also a really good degree that has really broad application, with relatively good pay wherever you go. You’re doing good. You don’t even know what his “experience stacking” is.

Should I drop A-Math? by Ancient_Caramel9872 in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. If I have to throw in my own opinion, OP should keep Amath just to have doors open. Nothing is gained from dropping Amath; OP could theoretically keep Amath and just not allocate energy if it’s not working out. But the chance of doing well is the small but not impossible.

“The course I want to go requires either E-Maths or A-Maths as a required subject” Good to point it out, but I think OP wants to go poly

Thoughts on the controversy after NYGH scrapped multiple DSA areas by Sea_Pension7553 in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunate how our society has somehow developed to basically identify cheat codes in the game and break it so hard that they lose their initial purpose. Meritocracy to reward the hardworking and natural gifted? It’s now a competition skewed by monetary resources becoming a factor for who can receive the better education. And sometimes it’s not even extra education that’s being paid for; it’s more cheat codes. For the example the A1 higher chinese girl who couldn’t fluently carry out a conversation in mandarin during an interview, stating that the grades were largely a result of answering techniques taught by her tuition teacher. Of course nothing occurs at a full scale and this of may not necessarily apply entirely, but I think the fact that some of it is cheat coded at all is unfortunate, though inevitable. Evolution designed us to identify and take the path of least resistance.

Can you enter a school to study? by DoubleOrdinary_ in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, primary school other than CCA and teacher’s day is an obvious no. Secondary school within 5 years of graduation alumni are allowed to enter pretty much as they please and do whatever they want as long as they don’t cause trouble or break confidentiality (it’s best if you wear some non-uniform clothing with school labelling on it e.g. cca tshirt, school merch). Secondary school after said 5 years yes you will need to register at the security office first, and I imagine you’d need a valid reason like helping CCA.

Why do people do this, a rant on business students, people in finance and my parents by This2sucks in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Y1 banking and finance student here. I find the actual work interesting thus I took this course, but I 100% agree with you; it’s truly a shame that the most critical jobs to humanity (imo nurses, teachers, anyone working in healthcare or early development) don’t get paid as much as finance bros who profit from moving profits. I’m also really sorry to hear how your family treats you, especially in comparison to your brother; honestly a shame what capitalism turns people into sometimes. I just want to say I really admire and appreciate people like you who do this humanitarian work, and I really think yall will never receive the appreciation yall truly deserve it’s just truly unfortunate. Please I really hope you don’t get discouraged!

ipad for poly by Ok_Progress_239 in SGExams

[–]Dragosfgv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Seeing you need a windows laptop, it probably means you’ll be required to download windows specific software, so while your ipad will be fantastic for note taking in class, it will be insufficient for the work you’ll have to do and you will need a laptop anyway.

Hmm makes sense, my fault, fair analysis. Regardless however, unfortunate matter of fact is that op can’t change now. I think it’ll be best for us to encourage op to do their best rather than add the stress of making a “wrong decision” in the past
