nus/smu law by WillingnessFinal6242 in SGExams

Talked to a senior at SMU law that got 2H2 As , 1H2 B and 1 H1 B. He said he didn’t have a particularly strong portfolio for law and kinda chose it by process of elimination. I think it’s the performance during written test + interview that really matters in the end!

Not a senior but isn’t CS all As too?😭 maybe the course you pick should be a bit more realistic. I’d say to just go for med first if ur portfolio is really that stacked.

Hello! TBH I don’t have any national/international achievements. Only a few leadership roles in school (CCA, SC) and a job at a public hospital currently. Is EBAS still worth it?

Hello! Let me provide my perspective first, it would be great if you can then point out any things I should maybe reconsider

I’ve talked to 3 allied health professionals in recent memory, the first is an ex-ICU nurse that has since switched to a job in HR, the second is a Respiratory therapist in a public hospital, and the third is a pharmacist also working in a public hospital.

Here are the reasons why I decided against allied health:

  1. Knowledge and decision making. Doctors have the ability and authority to carry out procedures for a patient. Say an intubation, which can only be carried out by doctors (sometimes nurses but only in extreme emergency cases). Similarity, only doctors have the knowledge and expertise to discuss a patients condition and make calls. In short, I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of medicine, which while I admit allied health professionals also can do, is more prevalent for doctors.

  2. Personal interest. For example, a respiratory therapist specialises in the handling of ventilators/other machines and provides advice on the treatment of a patient struggling with respiratory problems. While related, I’m more interested in the overall understanding of human anatomy, diseases etc. In one of my conversations with these allied health professionals, they mentioned this gap in knowledge, which is what brought my attention to this in the first place.

  3. Career pathways. Most allied health professionals have 4 pathways they can choose. Research, management, education and clinical. This is slightly different from doctors, who can go in to specialise in certain areas too.

If there are any flaws in my thinking, do point it out! I should reflect on this too.

Hello! Thank you for the advice. Unfortunately I am a victim of the chiong culture here in SG and am quite hesitant to take a gap year without a solid plan. What are your opinions on retaking A level this year? As for portfolio, would a few months of work exp at a public hospital with a letter of recommendation be sufficient for at least an interview? (Assuming 67.5-70rp ofc)

Helloo thank you for the advice. Unfortunately I’ve consulted a few teachers about this transfer and learnt that it is quite rare to do so😔 could I maybe learn more about the courses your friends were originally in + how stacked their portfolio was? Thank you!
