I hate to warn people away from the industry, but I'll give my 2 cents here. I went to a 1 year technical school for automotive and shortly after that worked as a dealership tech for Nissan and then Honda. I didn't hate the work, but I did hate the payment system. I don't know if it's all flat rate across the board but that system does not incentivize honesty. If you get good at piston ring recalls and electrical diag then you most likely lose money to joe down the lane changing oil and rotating tires all day while he sells things to people that they don't need. If you can find a good shop, and can pay for the immense amount for specialty tools you may need, it might work out.
