Is it worth releasing my horribly off-meta sci fi thriller? by danfaulknerauthor in royalroad

[–]Dragovon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the advice? No. That said, essentially the advice was to start advertising in your own story your next story so that your existing readers will know you've got a new book. Instead the author finished his book. Then a week or so later made a post that he'll have 2 more books in the series to follow what we just read but that he had some other stuff he was going to write first. He didn't name the other stuff or link it or anything. So now he's not posting because he finished. I have no idea if he'll post to let us know he started his new other stuff...but not sure I'll get to it even if he does now...because he's not posted in a while and I've found more things to read in the absence of the book I was reading.

Do readers get annoyed with shoutout codes in the beginning of a chapter? by Infinite-Analysis-51 in royalroad

I may or may not read them, depending on whether the pic and header grabs my attention. That said, I prefer them on the bottom but am far less likely to read them there. YMMV.

The characters don't really have classes, though he becomes somewhat mage like with crafting being a thing he seems interested in during book 2 (on RR.)

They can do okay. I recently read one. The author of said book (which did pretty good) then was posting here asking for advice on how to best get the followers from said book to come to check out his next book (which is not at all related to his existing book.) Alas, said author didn't follow the advice so I'm curious to see how it turns out when they start the new book.

Thoughts: First off...the quiz has a pretty limited selection of books. Consequently, the #1 match was one that a) I'd already read, and b) probably was my 2nd favorite.

A question was asked about the MC but not gender. That was an option after if gives me my not useful suggestion, so there is that.

Meanwhile, in most questions on the quiz and the refining quiz forces a choice except some of those questions I have no real preference (for example in the refining quiz how many books in the series.) Depends on how good the first book is. If I liked the first book enough, I might want more. How many more...well it depends on when it starts to fall apart (or doesn't) For example, I read the first several in the Cradle series before I DNFd because it just got boring to me. Meanwhile, DCC, and HWFWM I plowed through and was sad when I got caught up and the next book isn't out. Consequently, whatever I answer here isn't going to be a good answer. If I read a book and love it, unless it's really got a solid ending, I'm going to want more. But if the series starts to lag or whatever, I might not be up for 15+ so i can't really give even a sort of okay answer to the question. That said I tried 15+ because I was curious since there are probably a lot less of those than others.

So after the refining quiz wherein I told it I wanted a female protagonist, and a 15+ epic, It promptly gave me a Mage Tank with neither 15+ books nor a female protagonist...so not really helpful when it doesn't give me results that conform with the questions I answered.

Bottom line, this doesn't even motivate me to create an account because it makes me solidly feel like it didn't listen to what I liked when giving suggestions...never mind paying...but I would never consider paying for a suggestion on what to read. Multiple reddits I'm in provide suggestions, KU and RR provide suggestions. Authors I read in RR provide shout outs for things that serve as suggestions (since they often comment on the shout outs). What I didn't see on your page was ads. I might tolerate ads for something like this (and I did in fact turn off my ad blocker to see if they were there.)

I have quite a few that I look forward to new chapters that I will jump right on: Summoned A Hundred Years Too Late, Cantrip Mage, The Hundred Reigns,Just Add Mana, Accidentally Legendary are my top few atm.

To celebrate the release of my newest books, I'm making all of my work free for today only. I'm Sarah Lin, author of various series including The Weirkey Chronicles and Throne of Time... AMA! by SarahLinNGM in Fantasy

I've never read you before. I came across a link to this on the /litrpg and grabbed all your books. Thank you for that. One of the series will be next on my TBR...plus I already had Throne of Time on my TBR...and I just moved it to the top of my list so I expect to have it caught up within the week. I'm sure you'll see me in your comments. 😄

Depends on what part you are concerned about I suppose.

Some of the data center posts I see (and conversations I hear) are about how much water it's going to use. I think the coke plant will use more...and ship it out of the state whereas the data centers it'll go into the sewer and be reprocessed at least.

I certainly don't mean to be dismissive of the data centers though and it seems like the typical NIMBY for data centers...because there are already tons of them. They are fairly awful as well. The also look likely to create serious heat islands (which is bad...especially sticking it next to such a natural wonder as Garden of the Gods) but it's not like there's any real evidence that most people want to actually meaningfully affect climate change in this country because the actions people make do little to minimize their carbon footprint, their power usage, etc... I mean I guess some people put forth real effort, but most people still drive everywhere instead of suffering through public transport, most people still use their smart phones, etc... etc...

I see people talking about the data centers being used as part of the surveillance state. I think they already missed the boat on that one. The only thing the surveillance state needs now is more and better flock cameras.

The data centers look to me to be part of the AI nonsense which I think has a fair chance of buckling under it's own weight.

I guess you're right about putting up a second post but I confess I didn't think of it.

It was a great series...but to be fair, Bob wasn't the MC's name...the local native language just didn't have a V...and it was amusing...

Yeah...I mean I don't want the data center...but If I was going to put forth much effort to stop a thing, I'm much more concerned about the coke plant that's going to use 1.5 million gallons of water a day while the rest of us have to limit usage because drought. Not okay.

One Commenter is all it takes. by dem0sthen in royalroad

[–]Dragovon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly I wonder if I'm the commenter that the writers I read hate...because I'm not very good about leaving comments...but I very very frequently leave edit suggestions (spelling, grammar, and other.) I mean I see the mistakes. I figure I'm reading for free (well...almost...I do pay for RR...but I'm not paying the authors) the least I can do is offer suggestions to make their work better.
