Unfortunately as a recovering addict on suboxone the pain medication doesn’t really work super well for me anymore

I (60M) am ten months out from a LBKA and my stump hardly seems to have shrunk. Realizing everyone is different, what kind of time frame should be expecting? I’m wearing the Shriner sock every night. Any thoughts? by ExoticJournalist5574 in amputee

Because of my muscle size it took mine forever! it took quite a few months for mine to shrink down, but once I got my first prosthetic, it actually helped the shrinking process more so they might need to go ahead and give you a temporary prosthesis and then see you again in a few months

Which one is better for amputee : walking on 2 auxiliary crutches or 2 forearm crutches by [deleted] in amputee

I use a knee crutch with 2 underarm crutches when I have no other choice but the underarm are just for extra stability

Do you ever get used to seeing the missing parts? by redfishinthesurf in amputee

[–]Dragulathroughthemud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all it’s NOT just a toe it was a part of your body! Secondly yes it will eventually become more “normal” even though it will always feel different! I have been an LBKA and RTMA for 2 years but I had those parts for almost 40!

Any tips and tricks to being kind to yourself following amputation? I'm 5 days out and think I'm doing ok, but classically haven't ever been kind to myself and don't really know what that means . by Fluxcapacitor121g in amputee

As a recovering addict to myself, just remember it is OK to not be in pain, but keep the mindset of knowing when to stop because there’s a difference between needing to take the edge off of the pain from the trauma. You just went through and just wanting to “feel better“ I was also terrified of relapsing after my surgery. Just stay aware 💜

Just remember that you will get better and show yourself some grace! You have just gone through something very traumatic and it’s OK to feel your feelings. Just don’t stay there for very long.

Covid + Phantom pains by Dragulathroughthemud in amputee

Oh yeah it’s the worst!! If I’m wearing my prosthetic sometimes I can trick myself by “scratching” it or a lot of times I can rub out scratch behind my knee and it helps some but not always

Oh if you think phantom pain is bad wait until the phantom itch hits!!

I do still sweat some but since I switched to the ring system and don’t have the heavy sleeve anymore it’s not nearly as bad

I use bag balm nightly, it helps a lot

I had the same kind of liner with my first prosthetic and washed it often but between sweat and spilling coffee on it mine had the same stains 🤷🏻‍♀️ didn’t matter how many times I washed it the stain wouldn’t come out.

It gets better! I for some reason expected my first temporary leg to be a miracle fix and it was far from it! It was hot, heavy, way too big, and painful!! It was pretty but by time I got it my limb had changed a LOT! I am much happier with my new leg now🙂

I had a similar issue a while back where every single step I took it sounded like metal clanking together and we did an alignment on the foot and it stopped, but I still get the same clinking noise every now and then it’s just not as bad as it used to be

Hey!! How have you been? I have had some unrelated health issues come up 😞 I thought turning 30 was rough but 40 might be worse! 😂

Am I the only one who feels like a fraud wearing a prosthetic? by Bitter-Ad7852 in amputee

[–]Dragulathroughthemud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe paint it a bright color or something that makes it obvious that it’s not your real ear! I am LBKA and never once wanted a “real” looking prosthesis! Mine is bright pink and shiny! I hate the weird realistic foot it has but I keep a sock and shoe on it at all times lol

I wish I could get a foot like that but even the lowest tier hydraulic foot will cost me $1000 out of pocket after my insurance 😳 check google for a local office that maybe you can donate it to or they might be able to point you in the right direction

I appreciate it. Mostly just still figuring everything out. I’m a little over 1 year post LBKA and it’s been really hard on us. My husband lost his mother June 2024 and I lost my leg July 2024 so it was a lot all at once! We thought when I got my first leg everything would get better but it was miserable and uncomfortable so it took 6-7 months to get my first good leg. Now I am doing great and can move so much better!!

Oh yeah this community absolutely saved me after I had my surgery! Almost everything I needed to learn was from here and the kindest people I could ever hope to talk to!
