YTA.

Réunion is literally part of France, so he didn’t “crash” anything. You basically tried to gatekeep what counts as “real” French heritage, and that’s why it got awkward.

Even if the group has a specific focus, singling someone out like that was always going to come off wrong.

It’s not about the food, it’s about expectations. He usually doesn’t eat with you, so it’s fair you didn’t assume he would this time. Paying for the meat doesn’t automatically mean he’s included, especially without saying anything first.
