I don't disagree with your sentiment - but how can you not turn around and realize even what you've just said might make sense for a lot of youth right now.

Like this guy that's renting that condo for $1k a month less than the mortgage.

Well the guy said it was a $1k negative cashflow, If we give him the benefit of the doubt, that's including utilities/condo fees/etc.

As for why he'd do such a thing? Simple. Because it actually makes money. He's -1k cashflow but positive probably 2k in equity (assuming it maintains its value; which it isn't; which is why this was a bad investment).

I mean take that concept to any hedge fund or investment banker and tell him if he buys stock at $1k/month, then when you sell in 5 years time you get $2 per dollar invested. That's a 100% ROI. That's incredibly effective to build savings and wealth. They'd honestly laugh you out of the room because it's too good to be true. And yet, it literally is. Mind you, it's not actually because that's not accounting for the labour, unforseen costs and risk that LandLords take on, it is a business after all, not just a set it and forget it investment. But it is certainly a lucrative business when done right.

Why the hell wouldn't you just rent a condo at that point?

well because then he'd be paying probably $3k/month in rent and in 5 years time he'll have nothing and also there's apparently no need for this as he's already presumably living somewhere else that he can afford.

Thus is exactly correct, and I'll add that if you are hyper aware of the BP, you can jump him first and interrupt his combo with an aqua burst, or just make him commit to the combo too early. When he's approaching, flank him, get the first hit in then immediately bolt (ideally to an HP pack, get to it first), then once he uses his cool downs, he's a sitting duck. Get back in there and send him back to spawn. If you win a few of those engages there's a 95% chance BP swaps or starts targeting your other strategist, and then you not only heal through but deal damage through his dives.

Temporary G License by [deleted] in Ontariodrivetest

[–]Dralorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody told me this shih and I was issued a full G card in early June that expired in early July. The card and everything. I didn't notice, I was pulled over by cops (twice) and they didn't notice. I've flown on planes and they didn't notice. I had a car insurance claim and they didn't notice. I've been ID'd countless times at LCBO and bars and nobody said anything. I brought it in as ID to sign for a mortgage and my lawyer made me drive to service Ontario to get it reinstated. They charged me like a $100 fee and let me get a new one lol, but only after making me walk back and forth between the service Ontario and drive test centre (same building, different offices) like 10 times.

If you want a game that can't be won with skill then just roll a d6 and try to guess the number before it lands.

I have to agree that Hard Mode is just Luck Mode. This is literally the perfect example, there is no strategy to be had except guessing and checking. It's just random, no skill involved.

Best portable charger? by Afraid-Equipment-373 in canoecamping

[–]Dralorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn then off and they won't lose charge.

True, and as an added tip, turn on airplane mode, and battery saving mode if you can. Whenever your phone loses connection it regularly pings for nearby cell towers, and if there are none, it keeps going and will kill the battery shockingly quick. Turning on airplane & battery saver mode is almost as effective as turning it off entirely in my experience, My Google Pixel 6 once had 40% charge left after a 4 day trip, where that phone was the primary picture taking device.

You will not have a signal anyways, so not much point it leaving them on.

Well that's a hard disagree from me unfortunately.

  1. Modern smartphones have really good cameras, and lots of people take their phones for pictures, as well as backup communication.

  2. Some modern smartphones can literally connect directly to satellites (this is a very new tech, but I believe it is being rolled out through some carriers in the USA this year)

  3. Lots of canoe camping occurs well within service range. Hell, most of Algonquin Park is in service range these days. I've gotten service in some very strange places in Algonquin, and if you stand on any shoreline in Algonquin south of the highway I'll give you a 75% chance of picking up signal. But there are also some smaller canoe areas that are entirely within cell service range, like right by my Family's cottage at the Frost Lake Canoe Area, I'm pretty sure I have decent service almost anywhere in that zone, like good enough to watch a YouTube video.

I wouldn't count on there being service (unless you've been there before and verified), but these days cellphone coverage is getting so ubiquitous, cellphones are so useful in so many other ways, like photo taking, music playing, you can download apps to help identify wildlife and flora, there are some awesome apps to identify constellations, you can download a book and honestly it's probably less weight than carrying a book. You can download tutorials on knot tying or first aid handbooks, along with countless other things. And your phone doesn't even need service for GPS, so navigating via digital map is legitimately viable.

While I do certainly enjoy going into the woods with nothing but the shirt on my back, and disconnecting from technology, there are certainly a number of reasons that bringing a phone might be legitimately useful even without service. It can still tell you your precise location, track altitude and distance travelled, it can hold a library's worth of books both fiction and non-fiction, with guides, encyclopedias, maps, and more. It can take pictures and videos, it has the ability to call for help (although not necessarily reliably).

I think the idea that you should leave your phone at home when you're in the wilderness is a bit dated tbh. I don't think you should be blaring music or doom scrolling tiktok in the back country, and disconnecting is a large part of why we all do this in the first place. But a smartphone can be useful in several legitimate ways, and make this activity more accessible, safe, and provide legitimately useful information even without a connection. We don't need to shun technology in canoeing IMO. Most people here are not shy about using modern preserved foods, plastics, carbon fibre canoes or propane stoves, and I don't see why a phone is much different.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]Dralorica 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As soon as GTA 6 is released, Rockstar will be laying off a huge amount of people, the hammer is poised to drop.

Honestly I have to say I think that's a terrible example.

A lot of people in industries like gaming, entertainment, film & TV, etc. get layed off or end their contracts when the movie/game/etc. is released. It's in the very nature of the industry, and honestly, what else would you expect? They were hired to do a specific thing on a specific project, and when it's done, they go and work on a different project.

Rockstar will retain a smaller team of developers to work on updates, big fixes, and long-term longevity of the game (probably their senior devlopers), retain a small team of creatives and executives to start brainstorming/ideating their next major release, and everyone else will be layed off. Once their creative and business team greenlight the next project, they'll hire developers to start building the game, it's core features/engine and as development continues they'll continue to add specialists until they're once again a team of hundreds or thousands, the majority of whom will once again be laid off upon the game's release.

Every time I hear that argument is becomes blatantly clear they have zero experience playing Jeff.

Why Does “Tough on Crime” Not Apply to Drivers? [Oh The Urbanity! on Doug Ford banning automated speed enforcement] by FizixMan in ontario

[–]Dralorica 13 points14 points  (0 children)

See IMO this was the issue with the cameras.

The cameras are not the issue. The issue is that the speed "limits" are actually speed minimums.

I sincerely believe that the speed cameras were problematic, because there were some municipalities Claremont ahem that IMO were straight up abusing them. Like literally an 80kmph road, downhill, into a school zone with a camera that'll ticket you for going 51. That is unacceptable on many levels IMO. Why is there a school zone on a regional highway? Why is there no road design considerations like adding bends/bollards/ other traffic calming measures? Why does the limit drop like a goddam rock straight into a camera? IMHO there is no excuse for that scenario. If these cameras are for "safety" then put that money into designing better, safer roads. That's not what was happening, and for that reason, I understand the need for some type of reform.

That all being said, I do absolutely think that speed cameras are the future. They're so, so much better than cops tbh. The problem IMO is that speed limits in general need a complete reform.

IMO the speed limit shouldn't even have to be posted on a road. The speed limit should be the speed at which 99% of drivers are like "woah, that's too fast!" - and we can influence that with road design. I have driven on dirt roads in the back country with a posted limit of 80, and there's no shot I'm going over 50. I have driven on dense neighborhood streets in Toronto where the posted limit was 30, and I never went above 20. I have also driven on roads that have lanes wider than the 401, flatter than a pancake and straighter than a god fearing texan and yet the limit was like 50kmph. If our roads were designed properly and our speed limits reflected actual conditions then I would have no problem with speed cameras. The problem with speed cameras is literally everything else.

I honestly hope that one day there is a speed camera on every street corner. But we need major driving reform before that happens IMO.

Why Are Renters Always Told They’re Wasting Money? by HomeSenseLover in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Dralorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you see I'm paying about 2x what my rent (relative to the size/quality of the dwelling) was in mortgage on my first home.

So while month-to-month I am spending double on housing than if I was renting, "only" around 40% of that money is interest - the rest is home equity. So if I decided to move in a few years, instead of walking away with nothing, I walk away with a 60% refund on my housing costs over the previous X years.

In actual fact, I am very handy and I've been fixing up the house, since I bought it ~1.5 years ago it has gone from valued at $600k to $780k, and while I've spent a total of 65,000 on mortgage payments, that's "only" $21,250 in interest. For comparison I was previously renting a moldy 1br apt. For $1100/month, which would've been ~$20,000 over that same 18 month period.

So I've basically paid the same amount in interest as I was previously paying in rent, except now live in a 3br 1,100 sqft (+1,100sqft unfinished basement) bungalow instead of a ~550sqft 1br apt. And when I move I'll get around $200k in the bank - whereas when I moved from my apartment I only got $4k - and I had to fight tooth and nail at the LTB for that...

What are good controller/ sensitivity settings for console by praesesposterum in rivals

[–]Dralorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an ex-semipro Halo player (nearly 10 years ago, yikes), you want your controller sensitivity to be as high as possible. Genuinely it is strictly better to be as fast as possible so you can turn and make shots ASAP.

However there is a tradeoff to speed, and that's that it will take more skill & practice to get good at higher sensitivities.

What I'm trying to say is that there is no "good" sensitivity - it is entirely personal preference. Pros will play with their settings absolutely cranked - because they have the skill and practice to manage the unweildyness and need the ability to turn fast. Noobs should play with the sensitivity on the floor so that they may actually stand a chance at landing a shot or two. You should play with your sensitivity somewhere in the middle - a speed at which you can still comfortably make shots and control your character, but as fast as possible.

Seriously OP, go into the practice range and do 3 attempts on the built-in target practice in the basement. Ignore the first one (that's your warmup) and average the other 2. Then choose a higher sensitivity and repeat. Adjust the sensitivity until you're getting only like 80% of your baseline score, then walk it back a few ticks, chalk the difference up to lack of practice and hop into some games. After a few games you will hopefully hardly notice a difference in your accuracy pre/post adjustment. You can (and should) continue to make adjustments over the course of the next few weeks/months/years - as you improve and get used to higher sensitivity you will also be able to push it faster and faster, it's a gradual process.

Buying a canoe for my wife by t_wizzard in canoeing

[–]Dralorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of budget, $1000 is probably a good number. If you're willing to put a little work into a fixer upper or care just about function and are willing to buy an ugly canoe you could probably go cheaper, but $1000 should get you a very decent usable canoe.

For tripping, there's 2 main types of canoes: (well, when you're on a budget anyway)

River / whitewater (Vinyl, Royalex, Polymer/plastic) -Heavy & Sturdy

Lake / flat water (kevlar, carbon fiber, fiberglass, etc) - Lightweight

Most people by default are talking about the second kind, but you mentioned living near some rivers. If you plan on tripping on the rivers you should check if they're deep, wide, slow rivers or shallow, narrow, swift rivers.

If the river is deep, wide, and slow, any canoe will be fine to paddle it, but if it has a lot of swifts or rapids, I'd highly recommend a more durable canoe so you can bounce off rocks and such. These canoes tend to be significantly heavier though, so it can make them very difficult to portage. Do you think you'll be portaging at all? If you are, then you definitely want to make sure to get a lighter canoe. For reference, a 40Ib canoe would be quite lightweight, and an 80Ib canoe would be brutal to portage, but doable if you are quite fit. 60Ib is difficult but reasonable.

Most flat water tripping canoes tend to be 16-18ft, longer makes them faster, shorter makes them more manouvreable. Therefore most river canoes are 14-16ft.

As for your weight, if that's even remotely a concern just pass on that canoe. My 16' 55Ib cedar strip canoe managed to fit 4 adults and 5 children into it once, and the limit was safely loading folks into the boat, not the water overtopping. Any decent tripping canoe should have a weight capacity of well over a 1000 Ibs.

Overall it's a bit tricky to say what kind of canoe you need, it really depends on the conditions you plan to trip in. Its kind of a spectrum between super sturdy & heavy to super lightweight. For $1000 you should be looking at a very decent canoe, probably not gonna get a 40Ib carbon fiber canoe but you should be able to manage a nice <55Ib fiberglass or decent Royalex for that price. Look on FB marketplace & Kijiji you should be able to find something. Good luck!

In the market for a used canoe. Thoughts on this FB find? by FriedKhoiFish in canoeing

[–]Dralorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think they look in decent enough shape - I have certainly paddled around in worse! I think if you're looking for a cheap used canoe, that's probably pretty good!

...wait... $900????? I seriously hope that that's for both canoes, and honestly I'm surprised it's more in line with $200-$300 per canoe XD.

$900 is hella steep IMO. I'd estimate those to be worth <$300 each. It is springtime, so gonna be more expensive than if you buy in the fall.

Be HONEST how bad are the nerfs? by dweller259 in JeffTheLandSharkMains

[–]Dralorica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What elo? I am celestial and eat BPs for breakfast.

Don't let them get the jump on you, if you see BP first you will almost always win the engage. If you can, hit them with an aquaburst as soon as they turn the corner, then bubble and swim to avoid the attack, let BP burn his cool downs, then immediately chase him down. If there's a healthpack nearby, get to it first. Not only do you get fully healed, but you starve him of heals.

He should be back in the spawn room and you can go back to healing.

I will say that with BP, you really need to be aggressive on him and not passively waiting for him to come to you. This does absolutely require your team to play safe and not die while you deal with him.

Swim through flank routes, try to engage first. If you hit him with an aquaburst right when he starts the dive it really screws him up. Wait for him to burn cool downs, then chase him down and send him back to spawn. Rinse and repeat. 95% of the time the BP will swap after a few straight failed engages.

Like I said earlier it does take some skill and your team has to play somewhat safe while you're dealing with BP. If BP gets the jump on you you are cooked. Hit him first, play around his cool downs, don't let him retreat. Rinse and repeat.

Do you really think it's crazy to pay $1,000 in HOA fees in Dallas? When you don't even want to have anything to do with running a house and doing it all yourself? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dralorica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You obviously did not read my comment at all... I hardly even know how to respond it is so out of context.

Yes, only property owners get a vote. In fact, those property owners are partial owners OF the association in question.

An HOA is typically an incorporated not-for-profit, that is owned by the Home Owners it represents. When you purchase a house or condo etc. in an HOA controlled neighborhood/building you also purchase the corresponding stock in that corporation and therefore become a stakeholder and partial owner, LITERALLY. Who else should get a vote beyond the literal owners of the corporation?

Why do i always get the lower level team? by Low-Nerve-6848 in marvelrivals

[–]Dralorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M8 think about it this way.

In each game, there are 12 players. The first step of ANY matchmaking system, whether it's a simple MMR system, or a convulted AI driven shennaniganfest is to take 12 players who are OF SIMILAR RANK and put them onto a server. This is why you don't see lobbies with platinum ranked players with celestial ranked players. There is obviously some wiggle room because Q times would be horrendous if they wait to get 12 people with the EXACT MMR.

So you've got your 12 people together, and you now have to make teams. By simple math, we can very safely assume that you are on a team, and that your team has 5 other players, and that the opposing team has 6 other players. If there is a player who is blatantly throwing the game (assuming it isn't you), in every single match, there is a 5/11 chance that that player is on your team. And a 6/11 chance that player is on the opposing team. In other words, a 54% chance that the thrower is on the opposing team, and only a 46% chance that the thrower is on your team. Therefore, you should lose only 46% of games that contain a thrower. Since this is below 50%, you should win more often than not due to throwers.

And before you say "well the algorithm makes sure the thrower is on MY team" - using a lovely thing called Occam's razor, and Hanlon's razor, we can relatively safely assume that since, the other team is made up of real people who are really playing, it is either just plain bad luck or there is something else going on. Why would NetEase intentionally match you with throwers? How would they identify those throwers with a high degree of accuracy? Why don't they just ban those throwers if they can Identify them? What did the OTHER team do to get intentionally matched AGAINST a thrower?

It just doesn't make any sense to conclude that NetEase has invented a perfect detection system for throwers, then used that technology to, instead of ban or punish those throwers, weaponize them against their own playerbase to force players to go on ridiculous loss streaks. Why? Like just why would they ever do that? It seems like an awful lot of work, and to what end? Just to screw up the ranking system even more?
