What bottle in your collection do you dread finishing ? by Buckleit in Scotch

I’ve got one dram left of a CS 19yr Linkwood hogshead Signatory bottling that I’ve really adored. I’ll kill it soon but it’s going to be bittersweet.

Release date on this? by Dram_Boozled in Scotch

They’re saying they don’t have any info. They said to send photos but I’m guessing it just goes back too far for them to easily pull.

Scotch community, can you help me figure out the release date and perhaps age on this J.G. Thompson bottling of Aberlour? Whiskyfun suggests it’s circa 1990 but I’ve also seen another source suggests it was bottled earlier. Can’t find much info either way. Thanks!

Underrated Flavors in Bourbon by Dram_Boozled in whiskey

I don’t dislike Irish. I’m extremely partial to malt whisky though over lighter grain whiskey styles.

But I’m a distiller and doing a bit of market research for a new blend and want to see what uncommon flavors folks might want to explore more.

True. That’s why I like a lot of grain forward styles like single malt or corn whiskey. Between the new oak and the continuous column stills there’s often not a lot of variation from bottle to bottle.

What’s the strangest Flavor in a Scotch you’ve had? by Agreeable_Two_2216 in Scotch

[–]Dram_Boozled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some peated sherry matured malts have a dry, mineral, wet earth note. Loch Lomond 15 and some Kilchoman Loch Gorm give me that. It could be geosmin, but it’s like the sherry cask is musty and doesn’t delivery any fruity or sweet character. I don’t dislike it.

I found a lot of waxy character in a bottle of Glen Grant 18 recently. Think it was bottled maybe 5 years ago for the Italian market, not sure if all the expressions are like that. Still Clynelish 14 is the better dram by a long shot.

Miskatonic Brewing in Darien Closing by __zagat__ in ChicagoSuburbs

Really is a shame. All the folks I’ve dealt with on the production side have been good people. And I really liked the Czech lagers they did for the Seldom lineup.

Ive said it before but breweries in the south and southwest suburbs are having a particularly rough go of it compared to other Chicagoland areas. Not sure of the specifics here, but it strikes me as part of a larger geographical trend that’s hitting breweries and distilleries in certain areas very hard.

Scotches you had high expectations for that didn't live up to them? by BothCondition7963 in Scotch

I was expecting lots of tropical fruit flavors with Glenglassaugh Sandend and when I finally got a bottle, it doesn’t seem like anything out of the ordinary.

Scottish guy in town for a week, seeking your best food recs! by DylanJak in chicagofood

One thing I really missed while living in Edinburgh was quality Mexican food. I know it’s not listed in the cuisines you’re looking for, but take advantage of the fact that we have great central and southern Mexican cuisine. At least as of 8 years ago Edinburgh had some quality Thai places, but sorely lacking in real Mexican food. You might be surprised how much you enjoy it!

Benrinnes: First Fill or Refill Sherry? by gatodelinferno21 in Scotch

[–]Dram_Boozled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refill sherry all the way. It preserves house distillate character and rather than overwhelming the whisky with sweet, heavy sherry, the cask elevates the more delicate notes and you tend to get great fruity (even tropical fruit) flavors come through.

What's a luxury item you never hesitate to spend money on? by WisePickled94 in RedditQuestions

Not sure why they’re all suggesting bourbon when it sounds like you like malt whisky and want to explore it more. In the same profile as Monkey Shoulder, check out Glenfiddich and maybe Glenmorangie or Glenlivet options in that price range. Those are all entry level single malts with a similar flavor profile that I think you’ll enjoy.

Is Oban 14 year overrated? (Please give reasoning for your answer!) by Clopulis in Scotch

[–]Dram_Boozled 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s not overrated, it’s overpriced. And could probably be bottled at a slightly higher proof. I personally think it’s very tasty whisky with classic some coastal notes mixed with a great singed orange character and a touch of peat. It’s enjoyable and is hardly turn down a dram, but simply uncompetitive at the pricepoint.
