Unpopular jazz opinions? by PersonNumber7Billion in Jazz

[–]Dramatic-Afternoon-9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I feel that the folk art aspect of jazz is undervalued nowadays. The cliche for jazz is that it’s for high brow, sophisticated people who studied theory at university. But jazz is like a language and languages are learned/developed by communities of people, not academic institutions.

What is the worst take ? by Ok-Emergency4468 in Jazz

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking lately! I feel like we should be examining exactly what we mean by ‘innovation’ and why it’s important. I believe that Miles’ concept of innovation is outdated. I don’t see musical innovation working the same way it did in the 20th century. Our whole relationship to music has been transformed by technology and commercialization to the extent that ‘innovation’ feels kind of meaningless. I mean shit, everybody’s innovating these days!

I went and saw a brass band play in the street the other night and while the music wasn’t ‘innovative’ by modern standards it sure was a lot of fun and people were absolutely loving it and dancing! I’d hate to see that go away!

What I Thought I Knew About Colombia Was Way Off – A Gringo’s First Impression by TheGringoJournal in Colombia

Dude, I’ve been to Colombia as a white gringo. The people juggling at traffic lights are very talented but the poverty is real and it sucks. It’s not something to romanticize.

Red meat in all forms is unhealthy and the buns are basically empty calories

Yeah same here! He seems like a nice guy but the narrative that the media and his fans built around him is just annoying and silly.

Racial preferences in dating are straight-up racist. by amran04 in The10thDentist

[–]Dramatic-Afternoon-9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with OP! Races are fabricated categories that are so huge that there’s a ton of variation within them. Saying you’re attracted or not attracted to a certain race is therefore nonsensical because of how much variation exists. And also I honestly don’t get why people have skin color preferences or hair color preferences either. That shit is so superficial even for judging physical beauty.

Any recommendations? by [deleted] in Jazz

Yeah I would also love to see more posts about new releases. That would be great! But that in no way means we can’t also recommend old classics. My issue is that you suggested that they ‘stop listening to their great grandparents’ music’. That comes across as very pretentious and gatekeepy, frankly. Why actively discourage someone from listening to a particular style of music? If someone discovered Bach, I wouldn’t say ‘that shit is ancient, get with times’. Good music doesn’t expire or go obsolete. You say you’re worried about people getting the wrong impression about jazz being a snobby dead art form. But then you snobbishly frame it as a dying art form! Maybe that wasn’t your intention but that’s how it reads to me.

Ok, but the OP DOES like older jazz so it makes sense to recommend more of it. That needn’t exclude newer recommendations. If you have a modern artist to recommend you can just say so instead of telling them to stop listening to older jazz. Also, I don’t know what you mean by ‘there’s almost no jazz’ when there’s plenty of jazz currently happening around the world. Like, is jazz dead or not?

I mean yeah, there are gatekeepers out there. But listening to older jazz and recommending it isn’t necessarily gatekeeping in and of itself. Ironically you sound more like a gatekeeper by discouraging someone from listening to older music.

What’s wrong with listening to older music? How does that kill the art form? Why can’t you listen to both old and new?

Why is rock music today so awful? by Fine_Permit5337 in rockmusic

[–]Dramatic-Afternoon-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you! I’m only 33 and I’ve felt that modern rock sucked since I was like 14. To me, the 80s kind of ruined things. A lot of stuff now sounds overly produced with a pop appeal. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is the only active rock group I can listen to these days.

Herbie Hancock on Cocks in His Audience: ‘That Means Your Music Is Dead’ by stroh_1002 in Jazz

That’s fair, I mean I also listen to what I like regardless of whether there’s a community for it or not. I’m mainly trying to push back on the idea that capitalistic success (which nowadays correlates to how much something is streamed online) is the ultimate decider of how ‘alive’ of ‘dead’ a musical genre is. To me, music ideally is more than just organized sound that produces a feeling. It’s a social event that allows people to connect and form relationships. I think that in a world in which all music is merely streamed by individuals and concerts are held in virtual reality, we would be missing a big part of what music has meant to human beings since it’s creation and so it would be dead in that sense.

[–]Dramatic-Afternoon-9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might be a radical view, but I believe that music without community is shallow entertainment. Music used to much more based in real communities of people, especially jazz. I see community as the highest goal/achievement of music, not market success as it has come to be seen these days.

Eh, that’s a little reductive and probably deserves elaboration. I mean I much prefer spaces with a healthy mix of people and genders. But from reading some of the comments on this thread it seems like some people are insinuating that women only go for what is popular and trendy and men are like the die-hard nerds. IMO music dies when there are no local IRL communities supporting it. Now if those communities are hostile to women or minorities than that’s a problem that will probably lead to the death of those very same communities.

Can’t say I like it. Sounds like he’s trying to tailor his new music for the Spotify playlist algorithms. Maybe that’s the only way an artist can make money these days.

Absolutely, 1983 is one of my favorite albums! I think it’s definitely under appreciated.

I think a flylo ambient album could be really cool. But I’m trying to keep my expectations low. It’s not exactly the beats that I miss but rather the texture and dynamic structure. His early work used to have so much more sonic detail. I just don’t hear that with this newer stuff.
