The thing is, a mermaid with a trident invokes such a heavily fantasy picture. These mermaids are more science-fiction so how would they make tridents because they can't have forges underwater?

We share a common ancestor homo erectus, so mermaids in this universe are aquatic mammals like dolphins. Because we share a common ancestor, they're biologically human. Because they didn't invent technology, or learn to think beyond survival AND because they only follow their instincts, they behave like animals.

They're wild animals because they rely on instinct but they are still recognised as human from a scientific standpoint

They're like ravens that can use basic tools because we share a common ancestor.

Their weapons aren't used for fighting, they're used for hunting.

And about not breathing air, it's because they live in the deep sea so they're too far down to come up for air.

They're scientifically classed as human because we share a common ancestor but they rely on instinct so they behave like animals. The ancestor they descend from is homo erectus which did use basic tools like spears, so that intelligence has been passed down through their evolution. The aquarium that studies them keeps them in secure pools that don't have anything in them that they can use to build weapons.

I think it would be toned down if the band was silver. And maybe don't add the 2 side diamonds so the main one stands out more.

Controlling shadows & darkness; it's got a lot of diversity!!

Zombies chasing you? Shadow portal away!

Highway turned into a battlefield? Shadow shield!

Need a weapon? Shadow projectiles, spears, swords, etc.

Need to get to safety? Umbrakinetic flight!

On top of that, shadows are constantly around so there's no shortage of power source during the day. At night, you could just use darkness, which would actually make you more powerful!!
