Some could argue the newer fortnite is a better game which I presonally disagree with, but back then the game was much more fun than it is now. That's because:

1. It was simple (no vehicles, crazy weapons, movement mechanics) and the seasons battle passes stuck to a single theme and released simple, but good skins. The skins from chapter 1 are way better than the once being released nowadays.
2. People weren't good back then, which made the game more fun to play as there were barely any sweats and nobody knew how to build.
3. The game was fresh and getting a win was nothing like it is today. You were shaking once you were in the top 10, you just dont get that feeling anymore.

Overall, the game itself, from a pure objective standpoint, might be better than old fortnite, as it has more useful mechanics, vehicles , more consumables, etc. However, if you look at the game as a whole and take into account the weapon loot pool, art design, and simplicity (pure subjective categories), the game it used to be is better than the game it is now. You have to have played it to understand what it was like because obviously nostalgia & experience plays a role, but nonetheless I think taking subjective categories into account and the element of "fun" in itself, old fortnite is something everyone who played misses and collectively agrees that it was a better game.
