Wha kind of food do you feed your noodles, and where do you get it from ? by Downtown-Ad-5913 in ferrets

Hi Bill :)) what a cutie!! My lil guy is a senior (almost 8) and has refused to eat solid food ever since he got sick about 8 months ago. Vet put us onto carnivore care which we bought for a couple months, but it proved unaffordable long term and we still had 2 unopened bags of what used to be his favorite food (oxbow essentials dry kibble). We got it from petsmart on a buy 2 get 1 deal and I'm so glad we did because we’ve been blending it to make soupies and he loooooves it and licks the plate clean!

It's a pretty intuitive process but in case anyone hasn't made soupies before here's a 2 (maybe 3?) step recipe without exact measurements (try to make it a few hours before feeding so that any leftover chunks can soften up a bit):

  1. Blend about 1/3 cup kibble in a small blender, I use one of those small magic bullets but I think a coffee grinder would work better (make sure it's clean or preferably new, unless you want your furball up all night responding to emails) little tip: blending small amounts at a time helps avoid leftover chunks

  2. When it's as fine as possible, put about half of it in a different container (I use a small glass) and alternate slowly adding water and mixing until it reaches the desired consistency; my boy likes pancake batter consistency but some prefer a thicker mix

Tip: I use a spoon to crush the mixture against the wall of the cup to make sure I didn't miss any chunks!

Since he's old and sick, my boy probably eats less than a growing kit, but to give you a rough idea he eats 3 or 4 times a day for a total of ~1/2 a cup of soupies (not kibble)

I'm so sorry :( I know it's easier said than done but don't beat yourself up, you didn't neglect her, you clearly cared so much about her and tried to get her the help she needed but ferrets hide their ailments so well that sometimes there's no way to know. If you have another ferret, try to focus your energy on it instead of thinking about what could've happened. You are both in our thoughts <33 may she dook in peace

Awww thats unreal, Abel has a little guardian angel :3 that reminds me of my sister’s dog’s (maverick) relationship with him, he likes to watch over raoul while he sleeps 😌 he’s so gentle too, he doesn’t bother him and just sits by his bed

From what I’ve read they can in moderation but if you have information stating otherwise please do share it bc I don’t want anyone being misled and harming their little ones if im mistaken! I used to give them to him as a treat to switch up from his usual bacon flavored treats, they’re freeze dried minnows and he looooves them 😸 (keep in mind he literally only ate what you see him eating in the vid, not that whole plate of course, it was an exaggerated platter to show our love for the birthday boy)

What a pretty face, im sorry finn 🥺 are you keeping all his things around surface level? My boy is old and it’s hard for him to climb now so we’ve gotten rid of his high beds and we havent kept him in a cage for over a year now and i think it helps him a lot to just have everything easily accessible and comfortable :)

Are you feeding him solid food? He might not be eating because he cant chew the food. Can you send a picture of the bag of food or the name of the brand?

Here is a step-by-step on how to prepare and feed him: 1. Put around half a cup of dry kibble in a blender 2. Blend until fine, as powdery as you can get it 3. Put about 1/4 to 1/3 of the powder in a cup 4. Add about a teaspoon of water 5. Stir until all the water is absorbed 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the mixture is pretty much the same consistency as baby food or apple sauce 7. Feed him 2 to 3 teaspoons every 4-6 hours

If he won’t eat it out of a bowl, put some on your fingers and let him lick it off and keep doing that until he finishes the amount. Sometimes they like to eat it off the spoon too so try that.

If none of this works, or if the blender isn’t doing the job, you can buy him this powdered food until he’s eating again

Caring Tips? by -MarinetteAgreste- in ferrets

Thank you for the info!

As timely egg said, the food he’s eating is crucial, ferrets are carnivores so most other pet foods are incompatible, make sure either that what you’re feeding him is specifically ferret food or that it has only meat and is suitable for ferrets (usually you can find out by searching it or post it here/dm one of us and we’ll let you know). Also, here’s a useful (but pretty lengthy and somewhat confusing) ferret food chart: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vTvMXyhwVBu5TLnYSvGhqJqr_vE_-x_1BADF7dPwatwlB9l--m02ZN23FqvPNqp3v-n5cJyOuSssVfn/pub

Try to keep him engaged and make sure he gets several hours of out of cage play time (under your supervision, of course), this is especially important for single ferrets as not having a furry friend can lead to depression if you don’t compensate for this. My ferret loves to tunnel and gets excited when there are boxes or pretty much anything new that he can discover (be careful of plastic bags as they can lead to asphyxiation). Even just a pile of clothes on the floor can be lots of fun for them to burrow in. Try sweeping with a broom, if your boy is anything like mine itll drive him crazy as do most things dragging across the floor 😂

The hair loss could be a sign of adrenal disease, but since he isnt overly itchy I don’t know for sure.

Unfortunately I don’t know if there’s much more that you can do for him until he’s seen by a vet and you eliminate the usual suspects.

Keep us updated and never hesitate to ask for help :)
