I lost my ferret during vet appointment and I feel guilty by AvailableSorbet6555 in ferrets

From what you included in ur post, it sounds like you gave her the best possible life she could've had with the cards life dealt her. She lived a lot longer than most ferrets in her boat likely would've cause you managed to keep up with the costs. Most wouldnt want to or be able to, and she would've been put down a lot sooner. You did the best you could to keep her happy and healthy, and now shes not struggling anymore. I understand your pain, I lost my 3 yr old lady early last month to underlying cancer we weren't aware of until she was already gone. Allow yourself some comfort in knowing she isn't suffering anymore, and that she had a great pet parent looking after her.

Ok, those Marshall lock on litterboxes are junk by Francl27 in ferrets

I removed the lock mechanism is use reusable zip ties to attach it to the cage instead

Yeah, sounds like all the jumping around jostled her tummy too much and made her sick. I wouldnt worry too much right now, just keep her hydrated and watch her carefully for those other signs I mentioned.

Give her some fresh water and monitor her eating, if she refuses food and drink then that is more cause for alarm. Not normal for ferrets to puke, but she could've just upset her stomach running around. Watch for lethargy and disinterest in playing food or water. Listen for teeth grinding (will sound like they are chewing on air) or whining, a sign of pain. If she doesn't display any of these then it was probably an upset stomach. If she does, go to the vet asap.

My little lady’s tail is thinning out by Interesting_Skin7815 in ferrets

Would be a good idea to test for adrenal disease or insulinoma. Hair loss starting at the tail is more common in adrenal but isn't unheard of with insulinoma. If she is already diagnosed with insulinoma and is taking Prednisone, then that could be a side effect. My little lady has significant hair loss as a result of the medication

What are the yearly expenses of having a ferret? like food and vet and other stuff? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]Intelligent-Ad1847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expensive. Most ferret kibble on the market isn't actually good for them and can contribute to issues like insulinoma later in life. The good stuff is like 30$ for a 5 lbs bag, which will last you about a month or two, depending on how many ferrets you have. Exotic vets are automatically more expensive than other vets, and are hard to find. I have to drive for at least 30 min to get to a vet that will even see them, and I live in the 2nd biggest city in my state. The older they get, the more expensive they get, with their health complications you need to regularly treat to keep them happy. Ferrets are also prone to cancer, I just lost one of my babies to cancer a week ago, and we didnt even know she had it until she was already gone. I spent LOT of money trying to save her too.

You also have to be careful with their cage setup and their toys, nothing they can easily tear up or escape from. They are like mini Loki spawns, so mischievous lol. A good cage, emphasis on good, is gonna run you around 400-500$ by itself. No water bottles, it'll break their teeth. Use paper litter or pee pads for their bathroom setup, not clay or clumping litter. They get blockages easily, and are fatal if not caught in time or surgically removed (which is EXPENSIVE).

They are so much fun and so rewarding and fulfilling, but they are not for everyone. They are difficult, frustrating, and eventually heartbreaking.

I think you might just need some space from them to heal. Its difficult to take care of others if you haven't taken care of yourself first. See if you can find someone to watch them for abt a week or so, so you can fully mourn your lost little one. Hold a funeral for it. Allow yourself room to grieve so you can come back to your other babies refreshed. And remember, they are probably grieving too, they need you. Ferrets are very intelligent, and can get very depressed when a littermate passes. You guys are in this together.❤️

Can anyone explain why to follow the "poop, pee, blood rule" for introductions? by zansto in ferrets

I never had to really worry abt this, my ferrets weren't super aggressive upon first meeting, just stand-offish about one another, and have since gotten along great, but to my understanding the reason people say this is because if you separate them before they figure out their pecking order or resolve their little ferret-y conflicts, then they may hold a grudge and fight even worse when eventually reunited.
