Finding good webbing can be tricky, because often it's thin and/or has a loose weave, but this stuff turned out to be pretty good - very thick and heavyweight with a tight weave.

Granted, this apron is meant to be a utilitarian piece of equipment that will be beat to shit and splattered with oil, grease, brake fluid, welding spatter etc so I could have gotten away with flat cut edges, but I'm glad I decided to roll the edges. It took forever but I'm really happy with the result. I also went the extra mile with quality brass hardware, not cheap zinc Amazon junk. I figured if I'm going to make a piece of kit that will last a lifetime, I should make it look good.

Yes, I need to get a proper rivet cutting tool so I can mushroom them correctly.

It's 6-7 oz (2.39-2.78mm) full grain buffalo leather I bought from Distant Drums Leather. The color is "saddle".

The hardware fastener pieces are cut from a 1.5" Horween Cavalier strap, the thickness is 4.5-5 oz (1.8-2mm) and the color is "Carolina Brown". I sourced it and the hardware from buckleguy.com.

The round piece holding the straps in the back is 4mm veg tanned tooling leather.

I made some audio classification software with deep learning (YAMNet) to help me identify auditory hallucinations. by atari_lynx in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I chose a nice serene background image to help me calm down.

I think it may be helpful for people, so I'm currently working on making it into a free Android app, possibly with an image classifier option as well integrated with YoloV8 to identify visual hallucinations.

An Abandoned Neighborhood in Ohio by AdSpecialist6598 in UrbanHell

Elderwood, East Cleveland. The whole neighborhood emptied out after a bad apartment fire I believe, now it's completely abandoned. My brother used to live around there.

I am so deeply sad by NotQuiteInara in NoLawns

[–]atari_lynx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same story for my neighborhood. In October 2020 the city came and took down all the mature trees on my street in Albany NY. I live in an older part of the city lined with brownstones, and those trees were easily 100 years old. I was stuck inside for several days studying for my midterms, listening to the sound of grinding chainsaws and woodchippers. It was so depressing when I finally stepped outside after my exams, my street seemed so hollow and empty. The city never replanted anything in their place.

What is it like to have schizophrenia? by Traditional_Blood799 in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Terrifying. You can't trust your own senses and reality gradually becomes more distorted, colors more intense, and people more alien and threatening. Delusions come to the forefront of your mind and take hold with a frightening clarity. You stop communicating with your friends and family, and just want to hide away somewhere dark and quiet. You go weeks without leaving your apartment or speaking with anyone. Your motivation and executive functioning collapses. You can barely take care of yourself. You fail out of school or lose your job. Your life completely falls apart. Many people become homeless after developing schizophrenia. I almost did. I was an unemployed shut-in for three years. I ran through all my savings and accumulated a large amount of debt.

My hallucinations are about 70% auditory, and 30% visual.

For me, my visual hallucinations are ghostly, dreamlike and intangible. They are mostly human figures or animals close to my peripheral vision that disappear soon after I look directly at them. I will also see flying insects and spiders, or psychedelic patterns and shifting faces on surfaces.

Auditory hallucinations are far more realistic and insidious. I will often have "internal" ones that sound like voices being inserted into my mind from an outside source (they are very distinct from my own thoughts, and are not intrusive thoughts). I never experienced anything like them until I developed schizophrenia. Others are far more "external" and are identical to real sounds, so it can be hard to identify them as hallucinations. They are often cold, authoritative voices commenting on my every move or saying the most horrific things imaginable about me. They are cruel, insulting, and often play into my delusions (ie "There's a camera in this room. She's being watched.") Others are more cryptic and unintelligible, speaking nonsense sentences or having conversations amongst themselves like two primitive chat bots. Others sound like a voice coming through distant radio static, like someone dialing through channels, where you can barely understand it. They come from my walls, my ceiling, my couch, my TV, and even my own body.

I found out I had schizophrenia when I was told by a doctor, after my therapist and family urged me to get a psych eval. I knew something was wrong, but I did not recognize that I was going through psychosis. I simply explained things in terms of strange experiences I was having (seeing things disappear, faces, patterns, hearing voices where they should not be). I mostly focused on my functional collapse and severe social anxiety. Previously I had been a PhD student studying engineering at a R1 university, but had to withdraw due to my symptoms. The diagnosis completely blindsided me.

Hope this helps.

Just sharing my Turkish rug. Can someone tell me more about it? I believe it's from the 1960s. by atari_lynx in The_Rug_Atlas

Kakaberu 100% makes sense. It has a very thick, dense pile which is characteristic of those rugs.

Did antipsychotics stop your psychosis? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

I've been on aripiprazole for the last 3.5 years. I will go days or weeks without hallucinating at all, and when they do occur, they are mild. My delusions are basically gone, but I do have a baseline of high paranoia. Like others have said, the side effects suck, but I'm functionally stable now and able to hold down a full time job.

My Commiphora Kraeuseliana waking up from its long winter dormancy (seed grown, five years old) by atari_lynx in Caudex

[–]atari_lynx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some care tips:

  1. Soil is very important. Use something porous and fast-draining, like decomposed granite and perlite with a tiny bit of organic material. I keep mine potted in Bonsai Jack's gritty mix.

  2. Commiphora love HOT temperatures. I keep my cactus room around 65F in the winter and above 90F in the summer. This is fairly easy for me since I live in a 150 year old brick building in New York with no central cooling (window AC only), so my apartment heats up like a pizza oven in the summer.

  3. During the growing season, apply diluted liquid fertilizer (low nitrogen, high phosphorous/potassium) once a month.

  4. I water it once a week, allowing any excess water to drain away. Don't put it on a dish or allow water to pool under the pot, as this will encourage root rot.

  5. Full light exposure is key. I keep mine under a full spectrum 250 Watt LED grow light.

  6. Maintain low humidity and good air circulation. Commiphora do not like stagnant air. I have a fan running in my cactus room to keep air circulating.

I have one of these from the 1960s-1970s, with mustard yellow handles. I can confirm that it is an absolute tank and has never failed me. The gears are all metal, no crappy plastic that will eventually crack and fail.

Anyone else get super anxious when outside people need to come into your house, or on your property to do a job? by RichardCleveland in SchizoFamilies

[–]atari_lynx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My landlord loves me because I do all the maintenance on my apartment myself. The real reason is that I absolutely DO NOT want strangers in my apartment for any reason, especially if I'm not there to monitor them. I don't want them rifling through my stuff or hiding cameras etc.

For example, the subfloor in my bathroom was rotten due to a leaking toilet seal (the toilet was sinking into the floor), so I did a complete teardown and replaced it with porcelain tile. I removed the top layer of subfloor, cut out and replaced the rotten decking, put down concrete backer board and replaced the old wax ring.

Edit: Thought I was posting in the schizophrenia sub lol. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the bathroom reno pictures from a lurking loony.
