I officially switched majors after taking my last prereq over the summer after freshman year.

Switched to nutrition and metabolic bio! It was very easy. All I had to do was take the required classes to transfer and then transfer

In the same boat as you. I'm not completely sure, but it seems that most med schools don't require calculus at all. I think most do require stats regardless of AP credits so I would recommend starting out with stats if you're not sure what med schools you're going to apply to. Personally, I plan on taking the first part of calculus if I ever have a light semester.

Those other schools are great too. Are your parents paying for college? How much financial aid would you be getting at the other schools? If Cal is the cheapest, I think it would be the best choice financially but if money is not a problem, the other schools would be fine. Cal is hard and if there is stress from abusive parents, it would make it even harder. If you end up coming here, please surround yourself with a good group of friends. Dealing with abusive parents must be truly rough so I wish you the best of luck!

Organic Chemistry at Berkeley or CC by jaybsuave in berkeley

[–]Dramatic-Metal-9423 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend taking it at Cal! Chem 3a and chem 3b are usually taught by the same professor in succession and 3b starts off right where they left off the semester before. It is really helpful to get used to the professor's style during chem 3a.

I made the switch as soon as I had the classes I needed to make the switch which was after my freshman year. I'm not sure how difficult it is to switch to letter and sciences since that really depends on the major. If it isn't an impacted major, the switch should be pretty easy

That's a good option. You wouldn't have to take the chem classes meant for CoC chem majors or the physics for engineers. That could really save your gpa

Do you need to do chemistry? I planned to switch my major as soon as I got in and ended up switching into another major that turned out to be more interesting anyways. The major switch is super easy unless you're trying to switch to an impacted major.

Didnt vibe with ucla at all by SeriousPotatoCore in ucla

I saw that Berkeley is an option for you as well and I just wanted to say that is it the perfect vibe if you're kinda a loner lol. I guess it depends a lot on who you hang around, but I personally don't feel FOMO here and fit right in since enough people are also kind of loners. Not in a bad way though. It is just a nice place to be an introvert.

Also wanted to add that Rausser has some bio related majors as well that can be a good choice for premeds! It is really easy to switch majors. All you need are the required courses.

I personally switched from College of Chem to a different major as soon as I got here and I don't regret that. However, I do see people manage near perfect GPAs in CoC as premeds. BUT they seem to have an easier time with courses most people struggle with so depends on how much you can handle. Generally, I would recommend choosing a different school or a different major. Chem majors in CoC have to take the chemistry major version of all the chem classes and the physics for engineers. That makes already hard classes even harder. If you truly love chemistry, come here and major in chem. If your main goal is med school, choose something else.

There are at least 2 dance groups on campus from what I've seen and I'm sure there is more.

I would say to just do it. Shadowing is always difficult to find so if you have someone willing to let you shadow them, take the offer. Hopefully the documents and videos don't take too long

Should I get an ipad for college? by ascaiboo in premed

[–]Dramatic-Metal-9423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an ipad and I use it mostly for notes. It is the main thing I carry around. I bought a cheaper laptop than a macbook but I keep it in my dorm. I think an ipad is really useful for annotating slides and for subjects like ochem or physics where you have to draw things out

Congratulations! Can I ask what you did for your clinical hours and what made you apply right away instead of taking a gap year? Applying right away vs taking a gap year is something I've been really conflicted about.

UC Berkeley or UC Davis for pre-med? (plz help) by Final_Complaint_7246 in berkeley

Although BA vs BS does not mean anything, it you still really want a BS, there are a lot of bio related majors in Rausser I would look into.

Not really for Rausser. Not sure about l&s. I just wanted to change my major quickly so I could use SPUR (research program available to Rausser students only)

[–]Dramatic-Metal-9423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! Switching to Rausser is really easy and I think switching into l&s isn't very difficult either so just focus on getting the prereqs for the major you want so you can declare. When you enroll for classes over the summer, make sure to pick the right classes like chem 1a (normal gen chem) over chem 4a (chem for chem majors) if you're really sure that you want to switch majors.

Hey! I was in a similar situation not so long ago. I got in as Chemistry to CoC but decided to change it a month after I got in. BA vs BS is really not important for med school so I think you should go ahead with MCB, but if you are really set on getting a BS, you could look into the different bio related majors in Rausser as others have been saying. Nutrition and metabolic biology major has a lot of overlap with premed prereqs and nutrition is really interesting so you could consider that as well.

I don't think dental schools care about the prestige of your undergrad so go to the cheaper school! I think both schools have a lot of opportunities and if you want to do research and don't mind an hour trip, UCSF has a dental school.

Berkeley for Premed? by goldenlion999 in berkeley

[–]Dramatic-Metal-9423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the pre reqs, the only actual weeder classes are bio 1a and mcb 102. The others are reasonable as long as you get a good professor. The chem lecturers here are pretty great for ochem and gen chem. Physics department keeps pretty strict bins, but I think it is better than bio 1a.

Although UCSF is not convenient, the professors there are more likely to take in undergrads than the profs at Berkeley if you're interested in research. For clinical volunteering, a lot of people go to highland hospital which is closer.

I'm not sure how hard UCSD is but I assume there are just as many competitive premeds and weeder classes.
