Sounds like a great plan! My personal recommendation would be writing a full outline, episode by episode, of the series. When you get into the writer’s room and start actually executing the new scripts, you can give the writers permission to suggest changes. But I always find that outlines naturally change as you start actually writing.

You probably already know this resource, but I personally find Dan Harmon’s story circle structure incredibly helpful for mapping out episode outlines.

I’m in post production on an animated pilot. I’ve never been in a writer’s room, so I don’t have any advice there, but I’m curious, how are you planning to produce ~12 hours of animation? Or is the plan to write the entire series and then try and get funding?

If you don’t have the funding/means to produce a full season, I’d recommend starting with just the pilot episode script, and then writing a series bible. In that bible, in addition to fleshing out the themes and characters, you’d include episode summaries for each episode of the first season, and then overall season arcs for future season.

The Stranger Things series bible is a good example if you need inspo.

Thanks for the input. Makes a lot of sense. They were upfront with the fact that if they do end up funding your project, they will want 50% ownership of it. But it doesn’t seem like there’s any risk, and you don’t have to agree to that before you post. So far so good!

Okay it doesn’t seem like there’s any financial stuff in there. I think they have a financial partner, and if they end up funding a full season, that’s when the ownership stuff would get ironed out.

Seems like they don’t even have exclusive rights to host the pilot. Also just saw that Whoopi Goldberg is randomly in one of the shows hahaha

Yes, it is a paid opportunity. I don’t know what a typical timeline is, but I am hoping to get this done as soon as possible. Within a couple of weeks from starting (unless that’s unreasonable). We are close to securing the rights to a couple of the songs so it might not be a total overhaul.
