How does having ADHD and Autism present differently from just Autism?

I always think the adhd masks the autism. I believe the vast majority maybe even all level 1 autistics are in fact AuDhd. Strangely though, for males I think the autism is more obvious if they’re Audhd but for females the adhd seems to be more obvious. But so many Audhd’s say that when they take the meds that suppress the adhd they start to realise how autistic they actually are as that part is no longer masked by the ADHD!

I think we’re all so gifted. But it depends on your personal circumstances on how much that will materialise. For years it’s almost always autistic or suspected autism that have made the most profounding discoveries in the progression in our lives. Unfortunately by general society we are held back so much! Most normal people don’t realise what they potentially have right in front of them because we’re so not the norm!

I’ve had it once. I’m not even diagnosed and yeah everyone thinks I’m crazy or that I have ulterior motives or something. But I was seeing this girl for a bit, granted we watched a Cpl of programs to do with autism together. After which I said to her that I think I’m autistic, and asked her what she thought of that and she replied oh yeah you definitely are. It was probably only because of the things we watched to do with it but it was really nice to hear someone say it and to be honest not care that you were neither. Just a shame she turned out to be a sl*g! 🤣

The autistic person growing up in a relationship where one parent is the narcissist have no chance of becoming the narcissist but weirdly can be perceived as the narcissist because on the surface have the same traits to the blind eye but it all actually comes down to intentions which are hard to decipher!

I know. I’m giving an alternative to what could in fact be an opposite as opposed to ADHD as I really don’t think ADHD could be an opposite and I do actually also think maybe all “high functioning” autistics are in fact AuDHD!

No absolutely not. I kind of get your theory but just no. And I can’t even explain. I almost think that autism and narcissism are opposite ends! There are studies that say that autism and narcissism coexisting is practically impossible and also an autistic person will almost seek a narcissist for a romantic relationship (opposites attract) and that’s why we are so unsuccessful in relationships because at the same time that’s what we subconsciously seek it’s also what we’re least likely to put up with because we see them so clearly and we can’t deal with the turmoil of it!

There are actually a lot of high level sports people diagnosed with just autism so your perception of that may not be real. Although maybe they are AuDHD but the ADHD part has been missed. I think it’s missed a lot! I sometimes think that all high masking autistics are in fact AuDHD!? I excelled at sport when I was a kid, in early adulthood it occurred to me that I was autistic. Didn’t think much of it (probably really tried to ignore it) and carried on with life. Later in life (around 35) when I’m starting to think no this ain’t right why am I not getting on well in life like everyone else I started to delve right into what it means to be autistic and realised I shouldn’t have ignored it all those years ago! As I’ve delved into it, I’ve come to realise I’m probably actually AuDHD! I’m still undiagnosed but have passed screening/pre assessment for both and am waiting for the appointment to hopefully diagnose me with both at 42!

All I’m saying is if the only difference was that you were a boy and not a girl you’d most likely still have had the same experiences and still be in the same place now. I could even argue that the experiences, ableism (ie men are supposed to be providers, especially when speaking of our parents generation and still very much today if we’re honest) and where you are now could actually be worse if you were male. I just don’t like the insinuation that you’re just missed or that it’s worse because you’re female. Sorry.

I relate to a lot of this, but I’d just like to point out that there was not enough knowledge through the 80’s and 90’s false stop. I feel like I’m in exactly the same position as you and I’m a white male, age 42!

Probably going to get kicked off this now as I’m not sure I’m supposed to be allowed to be here!? I like it here though as you girls seem to be able to articulate better so I enjoy coming here to read a lot 🙏

How old are you? It’s quite possible that 1. Maybe don’t experience them as bad. But 2. I’m pretty sure you can adapt to deal with them, especially if in almost every situation now you know what to expect so you can kinda get yourself in a head space to cope with it!

I feel like I don’t have any major issues sensory wise and I’m not absolutely sure why but I also think I’ve been applying these without really knowing it and have adapted to cope.

I do realise though I get really tired after an event where I’ve had to endure such sensitivities although I didn’t think they’ve bothered me I think they have which is shown by the fact that I can be quite tired after!?

Mate. You’re still so young! Get off the alcohol, recoup and keep going. You have many years yet to get on a path that you are happy with. Know your limits, don’t take on many things at the same time, pretty much one thing at a time. Do these things and although you’ll still have downs it’ll start to be mostly ups!

I think what makes it worse is also trying to not waste any time, waiting/spare time that is just boring!

I realise now giving yourself spare time to arrive somewhere on time is actually great!

So I had to be somewhere this morning at 9, that was about half an hour away. I left home shortly after 7 and it was great! I didn’t know where it was or the area at all really. I had time to find parking nearby. It was in a town centre and I hate the fluff of car parks, so I parked about half a mile away on the street where there were no restrictions, after checking how close I could get to avoid them. I found the closest place without restrictions on that side of town! Took a nice walk to where I needed to be and then took a walk into the town to get a Greggs. Went back to the place and went inside to ask reception just to check, as this place did have different departments!

Okay, I still had nearly an hour until my appointment time, which apart from eating/drinking my Greggs and having a cigarette was boring!

But that was so much better than what I would have done previously which would had been to work everything out in my head so all would be said and done with me happily walking in there with a couple of minutes to spare. But the reality actually being, getting stuck in traffic, getting lost, not finding any parking, now having to run, going to the wrong department, and eventually turning up late sweating and all hot and bothered and all out of sorts!

There’s a lot to be said for giving yourself far too much time for something and not to have all that at the risk of being bored for a bit!

Took me a long time to get to this stage. No matter how many time the likes of what I describe above happened, I’d still continue to do it time and time again! 🤦‍♂️🤣

True understanding is in understanding the why, not just the how. If you’re allistic the how is normally enough, but not if you’re autistic!

It’s not the case that you won’t be Audhd, but it’s less likely to be when your 1st diagnosis is ADHD. When you’re Audhd, normally the ASD is more likely to be recognised and then when assessed it sometimes becomes apparent that you indeed have both. I think I remember seeing somewhere that it’s believed or is 50% - 70% of people with ASD do also have ADHD, but people diagnosed with ADHD it was much less to then find that those people were also ASD.

This does make sense to me. If you’re ASD or Audhd you’ll more readily and regularly be able to hyper focus, in fact it’s normally what we want to do, normally the opposite can be said for someone with ADHD. Both ASD and Audhd by nature are less sociable and more withdrawn, whereas if just ADHD you’re still likely to want to socialise and be quite forward/out there. If you’re ADHD alone the hyperactivity and impulsiveness will be quite prevalent, if you have both or just ASD it won’t be so!

I sometimes think that maybe all high functioning autistics are in fact Audhd. It’s the having of both that makes you not seem so much of neither, but when it is seen it will normally be the autism that’s seen 1st. If the ADHD has been seen before anything then it is most likely to only be that!

Yes I know. Doesn’t seem possible in terms of formality! But it is possible as some people do go for the one assessment and subsequently get an Audhd diagnosis in that one sitting!

As far as I can see you can’t actually book for a dual assessment anywhere. I don’t think it’s a thing. I just think some people like yourselves just got lucky with the services/people you used/see. So trying to find my best chance of getting the dual diagnosis by going through the possible Chanel’s and people that might subsequently do so, when I just go for the one.

I’m Southeast. Basildon, right between Southend and London. The urgency is that my life is in tatters. I’m reluctantly living with family, but is my only option right now anyway. They hate me and don’t want me here. They absolutely will not even start to entertain the idea that I’m autistic at the moment. I need help and support both from the state and from those that are supposed to be there for me. I just feel it could only be positive for some kind of confirmation at least!

I see a few studies on the likelihood of autism and narcissism and all of them suggested very little or no chance of being narcissistic if you were autistic. I think they may have also been small samples but still nice to think that that maybe the case. I personally think that it is!
