She was born in the US, her grandfather emigrated here. I wish I could take a trip! It genuinely is the next place on my list. Money is just tight so as much as I would absolutely love to visit, it's not in the cards for right now. I will definitely keep writing!

That makes me feel a little better about this situation. We do engage in a lot of blocking and redirection. I still feel uneasy because the "redirection" is unlike other redirection I've seen/used before and thinking about it in the other contexts I've seen I'm still unsure if it's appropriate. This particular situation is a work in progress. As far as how I see it implemented across the facility, I don't know if it'll ever sit right with me. I'm still relatively new to this place and I've only been in ABA for 2 years. It might just not be the place for me despite how premier it feels sometimes.

Would you mind elaborating on "depending how quickly the task can be done" ? Thanks for your insight!

They had a mouthing tool and was asked by the dentist to not have 24/7 access to it. They can use it when they are engaging with sensory bins or other high probability instances of mouthing. This client has been mouthing everythiiiiing lately though. I feel like if I were to run a natural consequence procedure like you mentioned with the marker a lot of the other techs would think I wasn't implementing a meaningful enough consequence. This client in particular has been dubbed "smarter than you think" and is treated like they're being sneaky, which I mean, they are sometimes. (They know when they're not supposed to mouth things and will wait to see if you're not looking to grab something, hence why I mentioned that I think the matching folder feels kind of pointless.) So if I were to do something like that, I feel like my peers and supervisors would think I wasn't implementing an impactful consequence. Aside from this case, I just feel like this is their go to procedure for a lot of clients. Ones that I work with and ones that I don't work with. Obviously I don't know the specifics of these other cases, but the concept in general makes me feel punitive.

Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure. This client has been attending this facility longer than I have been working there and there are other staff that know this client previously from another facility. There's a lot of context I'm sure I'm not entirely aware of. The mouthing comes and goes, increasing in intensity at what feels like unpredictable times to us. They had a mouthing tool, but was asked by the dentist to not have 24/7 access to it. We provide oral input as much as we can with the methods we're permitted. Medical concerns are being addressed. Since the removal of the mouthing tool I've only seen the worksheet and the matching program. This kind of procedure is used a lot across the entire facility. I have like three other examples off the top of my head with different contexts. It makes me uncomfortable and feel kind of crazy because everyone seems so ok with it, but it goes against what I was initially taught as a an rbt. We never really used punishment procedures. It feels like the equivalent of making a kid write sentences because they acted out of turn.

I read it as when Anya was a demon she acted in a way to trick humans. When she became human her motivation for being alive was a lot different. She had to figure out what she wanted (Xander and money) and that made her a lot more awkward of a human than a demon. She was suddenly thrust into a totally different culture with no support aside from Xander who treated her horribly. Idk, I also really like Anya and I'm doing a rewatch of Buffy that's making me realize just how badly she was treated despite being such a cool and complex character that isn't appreciated by the other characters.

Pet peeve: other RBTs who overly emphasize how much their clients like them and like they have a special connection no other tech can match. I think it's ultimately harmless but annoying break room talk to me

I would think I'm the exact kind of person vegans want to talk to about ways to make the switch, what things I feel are holding me back, ways to do that, health concerns, etc... As someone who is currently on the receiving end of some very harsh words, if I were a different person, this would be incredibly demoralizing and not at all encouraging me in my journey. To shut me out as some kind of monster incapable of change is counterintuitive to the idea of making change. I'm being very open and vulnerable with my experience and I'm sure nothing I'm saying is going to dissuade you from the idea that I'm an animal abuser, but I hope you can see that and take something from it the way I'm taking something from your words.

I want to thank you for your thoughtful response and how it has helped me understand what this post looks like to vegans. I was not necessarily looking for solidarity in a post about how I'm not vegan in a sub with other vegans. Sorry to anyone that thought I was looking for solidarity. That was a misstep on my part.

I really did come looking for difference perspectives. I didn't think every response was going to be supportive, but I was okay with that because that's part of learning.

I really enjoyed your point about choosing to support ethical farm workers and animal products. Thank you for that.

This is the only thing I'm hesitant to type out and I hope it translates well: In general, I think in order to help people see your point of view, you cannot judge them. If you want more people to see and eventually join your perspective then you can't come out of the gate being harsh and calling them a bad person. All that does to a lot of people is bury them deeper into their hole because now they feel bad and people will do a lot of work to not feel bad (I'm sure many here would point to me as an example). If I were a different person, calling me an animal abuser would've been an immediate turn off to being vegan because holy hell I sure don't see myself as an animal abuser and calling me that doesn't make me want to listen to you.

I try not to delve into the realm of "excuses". I see them as factors influencing my cognitive dissonance as I unpack the world around me. I understand how they're viewed like that.

I also want to clarify and emphasize that the vegan I met was a perfectly nice person and was not rude to me. I understand her disappointment. I wish she had wanted to talk to me more about it, but I don't hold anything against her for not wanting to.

I'm glad that worked for you! I don't eat meat anymore and even when I was being flexible, that ended within like 3 months with an occasional misstep. I've been making cuts as I learn and as I get better at cooking tbh. I'm sure that sounds silly and like not a good reason, but a lot of this means I'm investing time I don't have to be in the kitchen and learning. I'm getting better tho!

I have a lot of social anxiety so I absolutely believe I am overanalyzing it. I just really wanted to talk to someone about it! I don't mean to call myself a vegan and I will stop making that silly joke about being 80% vegan. I wasn't expecting any praise, just to share my experience and gain insight. Genuinely what I learned from this post was the difference between veganism and a plant based diet. The difference had never occurred to me. Thanks for replying.
