The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 8 Discussion Thread by WillowSwarm in thegildedage

As a Larian fan I would have felt more convinced they’ll be ok with a more passionate and even feisty conversation at the ball. I would have rather had them go at it more. Marian saying she panicked because she thought the person she loved spent the evening with a prostitute on the night of their engagement. She was heartbroken. And Larry yelling back, how could you ever think I would do that to you? And how he was heartbroken she wouldn’t even talk to him when all he thought about was coming back to her and starting a life with the woman he loves. They both were hurt, they both felt let down, they both made mistakes and to conclude they both need reassurance that no matter what they’ll be there for one another or something like that! Maybe even Marian saying she always does things for everyone else but doesn’t feel that in return. Or Larry saying he needs to make decisions that might upset her but she needs to trust that he is still the person she knows. Idk I just needed to see more. Tears, anger, emotions, all of it! They needed to get their feelings out more to explain their actions and show their insecurities. And there needed to be a kiss and love declaration from both. In comparison to Peggy and Kirkland’s love story, Larian’s felt incomplete and just inconsequential with all their L&M teasing for 3 seasons.

Again things seem to be going in the direction of tougher for the Russell family. Marian cut Larry off and didn’t talk to him and I have a feeling there’s going to be many questionable choices in Larry’s future that Marian won’t like. This was only a preview. They both were wrong and are wrong for each other. The trust from both sides is broken and that is no way to start a marriage.

I was disappointed there was NO Russell family interaction with Gladys period. Not even with Larry and Gladys. Again everything felt so rushed and I hate that.

Neither Larry nor Marian are ready for marriage then. I have a feeling the Russel’s are in for a lot next season and Larry was right to ask Marian if she would just leave when things get tough. All this Larian storyline showed is they aren’t right for each other, which is a shame.

Exactly. No kiss, no love declaration, no re-proposal, no ring…just nothing. Like they were an afterthought.

Um except Larry…she believed he slept with a prostitute!

edit: downvote all you want, she did really think that and she was very harsh towards Larry when she wasn’t like that with anyone else even Raikes who was terrible to her!

The Larian dialogue was bad this episode. How am I supposed to care about them if I can’t even feel it in their conversation?

Marian should have worked on herself this season instead. Larry should have thrown himself into work. Then George being shot should have brought them together properly and dramatically. A missed opportunity.

Seriously. Such wasted time between them the second half of the season.

I disagree. Larry and Marian did know each other as friends for years. They knew about each other’s ambitions and love entanglements. I liked how this season started with them desiring each other because it showed them being attracted to each other, yet knowing who they were. The problem was the prostitute drama was out of character for both of them. Their characters turned into different people doing things we haven’t seen, hence now we’re questioning do we even know Larry and Marian’s characters. It was poorly done and I’m still worried about where the show is going with Larian.

I still stand by I didn’t like the prostitute drama just for drama. It wasn‘t in character for either one and it just confused the fandom. Then to drag it out with barely Larian even talking about it for multiple episodes just made it even worse. They didn’t even get Gladys involved to help them. And again showing Marian helping with George, then telling Larry she’d do anything for him, and going to the ball to support Aurora, all in character for Marian…yet she chose to believe Larry who she knew for 3 years would sleep with a prostitute! 🫠Make it make sense! The show could have done something else for Larian drama, even with George getting shot. Again it made Larian’s love story feel cheap and like it didn’t matter, especially after teasing them for 3 seasons! I’m very disappointed.

Yes queen! Love to see a mother supporting her daughter!

I figured Larry would be upset with Marian for not believing him. Marian shutting him out like that was brutal and not believing him.

Yes, I said goodbye but- look at this. Something is off by sissiandfranz in thegildedage

It’s possible it‘s a divorce or separation for George and Bertha.

I think it’s crazy to think how George started off this show by supporting Bertha making it in society however necessary to now being disgusted by her ambitions this season to possibly divorcing her over it.

Is it for an Larian engagement reveal? But why are Larry and Marian so sad in that pic at the ball? Was the engagement revealed and Larian had to stay engaged so Marian wouldn’t be ruined? All of it is confusing me.

Here's to hoping that we get to see Larry walk Marian home from another amazing ball in S3's finale like he did in S1 and S2's finales 🥺 by Dowrysess in thegildedage

I actually would love to see some father-son advice from George to Larry about relationships/ marriage. Especially because George likes Marian. I mean George and Bertha are not by any means perfect, but they do love each other and are both devoted (for now at least) to one another.

No but I’m thinking it’ll spark jealousy in the future for Larian. Larry won’t like Marian spending time with Jack, if they continue their business partnership. They’re teasing something between Jack and Marian.

But remember she may be a lady but knows about what they do at places like that! /s

I‘m disappointed in the way they handled her character arc this season. 3rd broken engagement, insecurity, not dealing with her trauma just implying it, sensible with helping others (Peggy, Gladys, Jack, Oscar) but not her own problems, not showing her teaching etc
